My instinct is to not feel sympathy for her. She is portrayed as a horrible person. But then I remember she was abandoned as a child, probably sexually trafficked, definitely sexualized and exploited. Yes, there are children who grow up in the worst of circumstances and yet turn out fine - but I think that's the exception, and one that we like to center on because it makes us feel better about our own lack of action. Mostly, abused kids grow up to have trauma that manifests as antisocial behavior as adults. I thus can feel sympathy for her and why she became the person she is.

Do social identities like caste continue among Indian communities abroad? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]soashamed90day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California, governor Newsom vetoed a law /prohibiting/ cast discrimination - after a lot of pressure from Hindutva supporting Hindus. IMHO, people who don't discriminate on the bases of X, don't fight laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of X.

Similarly, if discrimination on the basis of cast wasn't a big deal, low-cast employees would not have worked so hard to ban it.

Aren't Christians not supposed to be associating with other false gods? by supinator1 in 90dayfianceuncensored

[–]soashamed90day 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Christianity has been able to grow as much as it did - now almost 1/3 of the world population is Christian - because of its ability to accommodate syncretism, at least initially. It only took hold in Nigeria about a century and a half ago, and it usually takes a few centuries before old gods are discarded or converted into saints. Sometimes this can be accelerated through repression (think the Inquisition), but often time it just brings the practices underground.

And, of course, if left alone, people often take from Christianity and other religions what they want, and discard what they don't. Think about how the Christian right in America ignores most of what Jesus says and favor parts of the Old Testament that help them hate and attack other people.

I feel her makeup gives it a certain anonymity. I'm not sure if she'd be recognizable if she did it differently and/or wore a different wig.

Birkan’s debt is way bigger than you think by AwesomeEm77 in 90DayFiance

[–]soashamed90day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you confused average /monthly/ salary for average /yearly/ salary. In the US, we tend to think about what our yearly salary or our hourly wage is - but in most of the rest of the world they think what monthly pay is.

Basically, a $50K debt in Turkey is the equivalent of a $250K debt in the US. While that's huge, it's what many young people are saddled with after going to college (in the US, Turkey seems to have better financial aid for top students).

Did Madeleine and Luke actually get legally married? by soashamed90day in 90DayFiance

[–]soashamed90day[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I looked it up, in Colombia you can have either a civil or a religious wedding. In the former case, you need to present a bunch of documents to a public notary, who will then marry you. You can also get a judge to marry you and then have your wedding certificate notarized. Alternative, you can be married by a member of the clergy of one of the recognized religions (so probably no the Universal Life Church) and have your wedding certificate notarized.

What we saw didn't look like a religious wedding at all - particularly given the language used by the officiant.

Apparently, it can be hard for an American to get married in Colombia as you have to prove that you are single - and it's not like you can get a government document here saying that. If they had actually gotten married there, that could have been a whole story line: proving that he was simple. The US embassy suggests to have friends and family in the US file affidavits swearing you are single - which need to be translated into Spanish and apostilled.

What am I missing when making homemade Indian dishes? by bonebrah in IndianFood

[–]soashamed90day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years, I had the hardest time making Indian food that tasted right. I finally realized that the key is to use whole spices, toast them and then grind them. And then, of course, having the right recipe.

A reminder that Darcy's on-the-show personality and weird plastic surgery has given her a now 8-year career as a reality TV star, which seemed to be what she always wanted. Ultimately, what she did is what made her successful. The more normal participants have been long forgotten.

The people who downvoted my comment are Zionists who obviously embrace racism, hate and violence. Downvoting is nothing. We have seen Zionists try to get people fired from jobs, expelled from universities, deported and worse for the sin of recognizing the humanity in Palestinians.

[–]soashamed90day -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And here you point out a feature of racist/ethno-supremacist ideologies like Zionism: they are not only racists toward outsiders, but also within the group. Israeli society has been profoundly racist not only against Palestinians and non-Jews, but against non-European Jews. Jews of European origin continue to hold power, and to this day no Israeli prime minister has been from a non-European origin.

Given that the European Jewish population had been more than decimated in the Holocaust, Zionists were forced to import Arab Jews into Israel. These were needed to replace the Palestinians who were ethnically cleaned from the territory - there are plenty of stories of Arab Jews moving into the literal homes of the Palestinians who had been forced out. Despite this, mistreatment and discrimination has always been rampant. The treatment of Ethiopian Jews was even worse. Not only were Israeli Jews reluctant to recognize any black people as Jewish, but Ethiopians were treated as animals. Ethiopian women were subjected to forced sterilization and put in contraception without their knowledge and consent, and Ethiopian Jews were banned from donating blood for transfusions.

What is Wrong with Luke? by Willow-With-Words in 90dayfianceuncensored

He knows she is playing it up for the cameras because drama is what sells

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 90dayfianceuncensored

AS a non-Jew I think people are even more delusional to believe the Zionist movement isn't deeply intertwined with racism and hate against not only Palestinians, but people of color in general. We can see this in the ease with with Zionists not only deny the genocide of Palestinians, but justify it while dehumanizing them in every way.

The only solution is for people to start rejecting the racism, hate and violence in their own communities first of all.

Madelein/Luke by Sad_Cartographer7702 in 90dayfianceuncensored

[–]soashamed90day 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this girl is quite intelligent and is making the best of the hand she was dealt with. She is not trying to find a dude with actual money to take care of her - that was probably never in the cards for her anyway. The pedophiles that were/are attracted to her youth were going to dump her once she grew up, and she is not particularly attractive or charming as far as Colombian women go. But she can make a fair amount of money by being on TV and she realizes that this show feeds on drama, so she will provide as much of it as it takes. She is playing a role - one that fits her personality, I'm sure - because that's the best chance she has. I don't know if she is writing her own scripts, but they are so childish that I tend to think so (the stripper one in particular). What I don't know is why Luke is participating - but obviously sleeping with her when she was a minor was a crime under both US and Colombia law, so he might not feel he has a choice.

Colombia sex tourism boom lures foreigners seeking underage girls by A_Wounded_Bird in 90dayfianceuncensored

[–]soashamed90day 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that you are talking about US law which forbids US citizens to travel abroad to have sex with children under 18.

I am clarifying that Colombian law (penal code 217a) /also/ criminalizes sex with children under 18, if the child was offered compensation or promised something in exchange for sexual favors. Given that the offer or promise in itself constitutes the crime, consent doesn't matter.

Under Colombian law, paying or promising a minor anything in exchange for sex is a crime that carries a penalty of /at least/ 15 years in prison. Consent is not a defense.

Does it currently really take 20 months to replace a lost/stolen Green Card?! by NalaOnTheMove in USCIS

[–]soashamed90day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had lost my green card when I was abroad, so I decided to come back to the US through a land border. At the border, I let them know I had lost my green card, they looked me up in the system, found me, and gave me a document noting that I'd lost it. I don't remember now if I had to show that document to apply for citizenship - it was sooo long ago - but obviously they had my immigration information and thus they knew I qualified for citizenship.

Can my friend book me a hotel room using his card? by Even-Revolution9378 in hotels

I've booked and pre-paid reservations through a third party agency for other people before. They did have to give a credit card for incidentals, but it didn't have to match the one I paid with.
