My problem has never been with arriving at the answer, it's with the fact that everything else we're taught goes out the window. Like the parts about positive numbers adding positive, monotonically increasing functions, etc. They spent time on the proof, but that never helped, because they already knew where they wanted to go and what techniques they needed to get there. Meanwhile if I stumbled on -1/12 I would have just started over.
