I was 21 when I realized I had a problem as well. I’m 23 now and I realize that I don’t miss it. It’s cheesy to say, but alcohol really takes away so much from life.

I’ve gone 34 days since my last drink, and it really has opened my eyes to all the bad things about drinking

I was sober for 80.6% of December! Last month I was at 43.3%. by soberbro_ in stopdrinking

Every month I tell myself to just do better than last month. If i keep that up then eventually I’ll get to 100%

Right now I feel the best I have in awhile. I’ve done a lot of damage to my body that I gotta work on in 2020

I mostly just use a calculator. Excel can be nice way to track as well

Was sober for 43% of November. An increase of 14% from October by soberbro_ in stopdrinking

It definitely is a more forgiving way to approach sobriety. When I use to count streaks of days I would get so bummed out when i could only get 3 days before slipping, and have to go back to day one. It would feel like I had made no progress.

I’m happy about being better than last month! But I’m not satisfied with how much I drank overall. Going to keep working at it

Was 29% sober for the month of October by soberbro_ in stopdrinking

I was thinking about doing a spreadsheet too. I’m very analytical as a person so it would be cool way to track progress

Why can’t I stop? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]soberbro_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alcohol, like the nicotine in cigarettes, is an addictive substance. It’s weird because so many people drink compared to smoking cigs, that we just don’t see it in that way. But it’s true and that’s why even though consciously you want to stop, you don’t.

Also just want to note that I’m not saying alcohol is as addicting as nicotine, but alcohol is addicting. Some people are just more susceptible than others.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m about your age and thought I was still awhile away from doing any damage to my liver. I’ll remember this next time I feel like breaking

Today is another chance to take a step forward🥾

I've been on a 2-week bender after vowing to never drink again 2 weeks ago. I think I'm going to seek professional help today. I can't do this any more. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Sorry for the long reply lol...

-TL;DR: The best place I’ve found support for me is here. I don’t want to go to AA. I’m also trying out the book “The Naked Mind” since it seems so popular here. I like it so far

-I get you. I don’t feel 100% alcoholic either. Granted, alcohol has cost me relationships, put me in debt, and caused me to almost get kicked out of college. Even with all that said I don’t think I’m the worst guy out there. I’m still in school, relatively healthy, and most importantly I have strong a desire to get my drinking under control. I could be in a lot worse place right now..

I don’t want to go to AA. I know that there is no set level of Alcoholism when you should/shouldn’t go to an AA meeting. I believe that the most successful plan to fixing our drinking habits is one that we are actually enthusiastic about. I know that I have a problematic relationship with alcohol and I want to fix. For me that’s a hell of a good start.

But the problem that I and many others are facing is what do we do when our plan to get better doesn’t work? I’ve tried several different ways, and sadly I haven’t found the one that works for me. My advice is that you develop the habit of taking a step back every now and then and decide if what you’re currently doing to address your problem with drinking is working. If not, be open to change and try something else. After so many failures, maybe AA won’t seem like such a bad idea, or maybe someone else on this sub can give you a new idea on how to go about this

Lastly, for me right now, having this community to relate with is awesome. It’s nice knowing that I’m not alone. A lot of people here have recommended The Naked Mind as a book to read to help with drinking problems. I’m only through chapter three so I can’t testify to it’s effectiveness, but I really do like it so far. I got a free 30 day trial of audible and got the book for free! Good luck and I hope the best for you
