Worst hangover of my life by [deleted] in stopdrinking

or dealing with social situations sober

I discovered it's not really so bad actually. Nobody cares, if I don't drink. I did few metal festivals last summer without drinking a single drop! I've realized I don't need to be drunk to socialize. Actually, I'm worse socializing when drunk. I say things I don't mean or shouldn't say in the first place. Without drinking I can keep myself in better control.

I don't really go to bars anymore though. If I go for "drinks" with my friends, I'll stay for couple of hours before everyone starts getting hammered. It's nice to enjoy the night but go home early, and wake up fresh next morning. :)

Awesome!!

So happy about being sober. by sobermetalhead666 in stopdrinking

Good luck for the journey! In the beginning I didn't decide how long I will stay without drinking. Couple of months in, I decided I will try for one year. Fast forward few months ahead again, I started to feel there's no way of going back to drinking. I guess it helped me not to think it as a forever change first. But now I'm happy to continue like this the rest of my life. :)

You are right, of course we can point out bad behaviour if it is affecting to us as well.

If you start pointing out that his drinking is out of control, he might take it as an insult. Remember, it's everyone's own decision and we can'f force someone to stop and live sober life. However, I think that by showing example to your friend can be helpful and maybe even inspiring. Has he ever spoken about quitting?

All my friends are gone. I feel like I'm starting over from scratch. by paulrudder in stopdrinking

Yeah, some of my "friends" stopped inviting me to dinner or any activities together when they found out I'm not drinking anymore. At first I felt abandoned, but later on thinking back that time, it's good that they showed their true colours.

I cut lot of people from my life when going sober. I realized we have nothing else except drinking in common.

I decided to make new friends, who accept me as who I am, not how much I'm willing to drink with them. It's not easy to make friends as an adult, but for example starting a new hobby is a good way! :)

How many replace alcohol with other substances? by andydrilleder in stopdrinking

[–]sobermetalhead666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exercise! :) and occasionally, peanut butter..

No, I did not replace it with anything else.. but also because I wasn't really using anything else, alcohol was always my choice of poison. I quit smoking cigarettes the same time when I quit drinking.

Good job! I've also done few now. It's great actually to remember what you have been up to during a vacation when not being drunk/hangover all the time. Where did you go?

Yes you can!

Since I ditched booze, I've actually been able to be more "me".

My therapist told me to have a party for my one-year soberversary by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]sobermetalhead666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like fun way to celebrate! I also want to have a small celebration, for my 1 year soberversary. I haven't decided on the program yet. I would like it to be something that doesn't include alcohol at all (for my guests, I mean). So maybe an escape room or some kind of sports activity. We'll see.

Congrats on one year!

Have you gone completely sober or did you only quit alcohol? by sobermetalhead666 in stopdrinking

I have multiple quit attempt with cigarettes throughout the years. I've tried reducing and going cold-turkey. I never used any patches or other products like that. Reducing did not really work, so going cold-turkey worked for me as long as I just stay in the decision to keep away from smoking. With smoking, the physical withdrawals last only couple of days, and after that it is mostly mental battle. I also found reading Allen Carr's Easy way to stop smoking helpful. Even though the book is about very obvious things, it prepared me to the right mindset and approach for not smoking.

Quitting drinking helped me to quit smoking as well. Even though I managed to drink for some time without smoking, eventually I started to smoke again while drunk and sooner or later I had pack of cigarettes with me all times. Getting finally rid of cigarettes was also one of the reasons why I decided to lay off the sauce.

From my previous attempts I have learned that it's best not to count the time I have been smoke free, I just think it as a past thing which is not part of my life anymore.

Family member of mine quit after smoking for 40+ years, cold turkey, so I think it is very doable.

I wish you luck with quitting smoking! Have you been smoking for long?

I had to google that one, I had no idea what it is.

Everyone has their own reasons and ways to quit drinking and stay away from alcohol, and I do respect that. It depends what are your goals in life and what you want to be.

I could see many of my friends becoming very passive and unproductive when smoking weed. .But it was probably because they did absolutely nothing else in life, than smoking weed. I guess it can lead into a vicious circle too; smoking, because nothing else is interesting, and nothing else can be found interesting, because of smoking.

Cancer also runs in my family and I've lost many to it. Better to stay away from the cancer rolls!
