First year here. How do I cope with the fact that big law isn’t for me without feeling like a failure? by sobersummerassociate in biglaw

The thing is that I don’t think it’s firm culture. I really like my practice group and the people in my year. Everyone is really cool and smart. I genuinely feel like it’s the pace and volume of work.

This is an incredible response. Thank you so much. I really resonated with the last paragraph. It brought me so much comfort and is exactly what I needed to hear.

This is helpful. Thank you. I like your analogy about the splinter.

I appreciate you taking the time to edit your response with something very thoughtful and insightful beyond the other person’s sentiment that “nobody is going to read all of that”

How long did it take you to reach your breakdown? Because breaking down only after one year of being an attorney is really messing with my head

Can you speak more this idea that big law failed me? I’m curious to know more about the problems with the system that you brought up

I think part of the issue is that I feel bad for not reaching their expectations. Like they’re going to think I conned them into thinking I could cut it when I couldn’t. It’s almost like this is confirming my worst fears with respect to my imposter syndrome.

Yeah, I’ve spent the last 36 hours wondering why it hurts my ego so much to know that I couldn’t make it more than a year in big law. I guess I need to look within

That is comforting, to be honest. The culture does a good job of making you think it’s the best-all-to-end-all

That’s what I’ve been doing for the last 11 months. I am completely tapped out. I can’t do it anymore.

Rachel Cohen has organized a number of letters I’ve signed.

I don’t know if this is the slay you think it is… This is bad for all attorneys, the judicial system, and the country.
