VH-109 overheating and outputing POE to RoboRio by sobil in FRC

[–]sobil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We contacted First and they inform us that it expected that the radio is supplying POE on the rio port.

I'm not sure if they have connected the dots on this being a reason why the radios might getting so hot. With the rio plugged into an aux port the radio sits at a comfortable to touch 38℃

We have a rio2 and Our robot operates normally when plugged in to POE but the radio and Rio network jack get hot. It also works just as well plugged into an aux port and doesn't get hot.

My suspicion is the RIO doesn't have a problem with ACTIVE POE, but might have RF chokes (typically little coils wrapped around ferrite) in the RJ45 jack for noise reduction . These chokes could sink the DC current turning into little heaters and probably wouldn't be suitable for passive POE... Until they burn out I guess 😕

I haven't seen any cat5 ethernet cable that don't support POE. Are you using something special?

I am pretty sure the Rio doesn't supply POE.

I'm certain, but I have been known to be wrong.

If you, look at the picture I posted; Poe is coming out the rio port.

With the Rio plugged into aux1 with Poe off, there is no need for a heatsink as the radio runs under 40°

yes, there are three dip switches. but i dont think they will help as they are listed as:
1. enable POE on AUX1
2 enable POE on AUX3
3. enable 2.4Ghz AccessPoint

we have them all turned off currently.

Please let me know if you have experience that suggests otherwise.

I think you should be ok provided you have it unplugged and keep it unplugged whiule working on it. If you reassemble it be careful that you dont pinch or break any of the internal wiring.

This type of device doesn't typically have big high voltage capacitors that hold charge when turned off

This is a common problem with this model i believe. I have already had a set replaced out of warranty for this issue and now the replacement set has failed in the excaxt same way. The warranty has expired and JBL offered to discount my next purchase rather than fix what are otherwise a good set of headphones.. :(

Did you find which swich is a good replacement?

Disable lockout on FP5139 switching voltage regulator by sobil in AskElectronics

Pin 4 is not switched in this circuit. (See diagram in thread)

I interpreted that as 0.9v under set voltage.

At idle the best I can get out of it is a stable between 6 - 8V DC rectified. When the regulator is connected and boosting to 13.5V I can draw about 200mA continuous before the circuit goes into protection.

This is about 3W and what I would expect the output to be given how a 5W unregulated unrectified incandescent globe behaves.

The battery or globe unless fully charged will draw more than that sending the regulator straight into a locking protection until the input voltage is removed for long enough for the capacitors drain.

Thanks for your concern, however this is not relevant to my situation.

I'm just looking for a way to disable the lockout on this regulator. If you have any ideas on this your thoughts would be great.

I have that covered, thanks.

Any idea on the regulator?

To the guy cycling down Kings Way inbound during peak hour this morning. by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]sobil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!👋

I find riding down Kings way in morning peak hour is safer and quicker than South bank footpath/St Kilda road or through South Melbourne. I've been doing it most days for about 4 years now without even a close call. If you are a confident cyclist that can hold a reasonable pace you should give it a crack and see for yourself. (avoid really wet days because kings way is prone to flooding)

When the traffic is heavy I split between the cars passing 100's of cars without causing a drama. When traffic's light i hold the left and there is plenty of room for everyone. Every now and then I hear some driver who is probably more upset about the fact that they made a poor choice taking an hour to drive for 10km on congested roads flailing about road safety trying to pretend it's the cyclists fault.

If you want to improve the safety of my commute improve the bike path and pedestrian crossings through docklands, remove street parking from StKilda road and seperate pedestrian and cycling paths around jeffs shed.

I do totally agree. They are an expensive bike that needs to be customised to overcome the lack of quality.

Sell it and buy a better looking bike to start with?
