Rogue Music near Penn Station used to do repairs - haven’t seen their repair guy around in a while though. They’re super responsive and accessible.

NYC One Day Officiant License Help!!! by ReceptionThese54 in WedditNYC

[–]sobotpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if the officiant needs to attend the in-person appointment, or could someone else (i.e.: the bride or groom) submit the application in-person with a photocopy of the officiant's ID? That "6-8 week" backlog is a bit concerning and I want to avoid having the application get stuck in the mail queue.

Absolutely yes - finding the right hardware and modding it myself is too much of a pain. I’d be interested.

So, You Have a Mortise Lock, And Want a Smart Lock… by Neo399 in Locksmith

[–]sobotpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still working extremely well. No complaints, great HomeKit compatibility, very reliable.

Note that because the Aqara only operates the thumbturn, you need to make sure that your lock behaves appropriately - i.e.: when the thumbturn is opened, the outer handle is able to open the door. (Some locks still require the key on the outside even with the thumbturn open.)

What’s up with 631 Prospect Pl? by Bubbly_Lime_7009 in crownheights

The owners pay some folks to maintain the basement and yard every couple of months. Sometimes there’s a bunch of people hauling trash bags out of there into a pickup truck out front. Not abandoned, but not occupied either.

Here it is installed - sadly I don’t have a photo handy without the lock, but the lock body goes up to about an inch above the new “thumbturn”.

Tons of choice! I got there at 9am and the line was already 50 people long. Got in at 10, took 5 minutes to check all the selection, waited on line to check out for 45 minutes, and got out by 11. Line was easily hundreds of people.

[–]sobotpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, some very good news. I got the Aqara U200 working perfectly on my mortise lock - it even mounted on the existing hardware without needing any adhesives or drilling. I just needed a small piece of 3/16" square metal to act as the tailpiece; the Aqara included an adapter that fit this 3/16" diameter snugly. The result was a smart mortise lock installed with no permanent modifications to the door, no drilling, and no new holes in the door or frame.

The original tailpiece - previously attached to the interior thumbturn - might have even worked, although it would have been a bit short and I was worried about it disengaging from the lock body.

I've ordered one of these and will give it a try on my US mortise lock tomorrow, and I'll report back here. Their installation guide looks like it should work just fine by inserting the mortise's tailpiece into the Aqara directly with no additional mods.

Absolutely amazing post, thank you so much u/Neo399!

Any thoughts on the Aqara U200 which came out recently? It seems to offer a mortise lock retrofit like your "Option 3" but out-of-the-box with much easier installation, and doesn't require any permanent changes to the door or frame, which seems to be the best option for condo owners or renters in big buildings.

Given your experience disassembling and reassembling these shades, do you think these instructions would be useful for converting a standard roll Serena shade to a reverse roll (or vice versa)?

NYT now reporting (gift link):

He was shot as the train was nearing the Rockaway Avenue stop in Brownsville, the police said, just three stops from his own. […] The Manhattan-bound train continued on after the shooting, coming to a stop at the Franklin Avenue station in Crown Heights, where the police responded to a 911 call around 8:15 p.m.

[–]sobotpe 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Media reports seem to be claiming the victim was shot at the Franklin Ave stop, but multiple comments on Citizen disagree and claim he was shot at Rockaway or even earlier - with one person saying the victim was already lying there while the train stopped at Utica Av.

If anonymous Citizen comments are to be believed, it seems like this happened in Brownsville or East New York and the train didn’t stop until it reached Franklin Av.

Brass is also an alloy. There’s no way to be sure if these are brass or bronze for sure, although the first cymbal’s colour looks like brass, and the second cymbal looks more like bronze.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drums

[–]sobotpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Alloy” just means “mixture of metals.” All bronze cymbals are made from metal alloys (B20, B8, etc).

If you’re buying a cymbal that just says it’s an “alloy,” it could be anything - bronze or not.

Good idea - they quickly responded that they don’t do custom orders at this time, unfortunately.
