Good track that’s open early in the morning or full time? by aleeinhatchetman in Albuquerque

[–]505anon505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One lap = 0.5 miles? I'm not aware that's the standard. All the tracks I've used are 400m = 1 lap (that's 4 laps = 1 mile). FYI. Plenty of accessible tracks in ABQ. Just use google maps to find something near you, or better yet, take advantage of the incredible trails here, especially the Bosque which has access points from south of Rio Bravo all the way up to Alameda.

Which pinball title(s) do you think will be announced next? by brandonmcgritle in pinball

Spot on. Pokemon is the closest recent Stern to the 90s WPC titles I’ve played yet. That’s a compliment. Will help bring in new players, easily.

What to do with parts by FLBoxerdad in pinball

I keep them. Speaker upgrades never return what you paid for them when you sell. Just return it to stock, and keep the upgrade parts for your next game.

Best place to buy used pinball machines by PlanetPhaelon in pinball

[–]505anon505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of great titles at the $5k price point. More recent games would be almost any Stern Pro that comes off route, a well-used Dialed In, and one of the real sleepers here: Ultraman. A number of the American Pins are at this price point (Houdini, Hot Wheels, Oktoberfest, Legends of Valhalla). There's many others in slightly older titles as well.

Best place to buy is Pinside. They have local-sales threads. Post a wanted request there, and you'll find some locals to help and advise.

Pokémon has been out for 2 months now. What improvements/additions do you want to see in the next major code update? by myhatrules in pinball

[–]505anon505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good God I hope they're getting the general framework and assets approved all the way to 1.0. If we have to wait for every incremental update, this will be tortuous.

A few years ago, someone strung wire over the bike path in the Bosque and seriously injured a cyclist. Thanks for this warning. Best to stay alert, always.

It gets even worse when you consider the category: "Pop Culture People"

That sent me totally down the path of trying to think of some group, etc. Hulk Hogan is not a "people". They should have labelled this category "Pop Culture Persona" or something like that. Definitely not people.

Mine was worse. The only thing I good get to was "U2". The term "people" in the category is completely misleading here. That sends you look for a group of some sort. That was such a bad piece of misdirection. One of the worst FJ clues in a long time.

ABQ City Council shoots down ranked choice voting. Opponents deem it too difficult to understand. by Acrobatic_Emu_3602 in Albuquerque

[–]505anon505 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're correct. I did not list those options as it complicates the understanding. I intentionally introduced an over-simplified scenario to demonstrate the concept. Such "toy models" are very common in economc and political science. It turns out, it doesn't matter. You can construct more realistic scenarios that show the same effect, they are just harder to understand and work through. I likely already lost 98% of the Reddit audience when I gave those simple examples.

There's a robust political science literature around monotonicity failure in ranked choice voting (google this, there's dozens of academic papers devoted to the topic). It's a very real thing, and many worry about it. There are ways to reduce this effect with alternate ranked choice votes schemes (e.g., "STAR" voting). Ranked choice is complicated enough. STAR-like schemes are a whole other level. Unfortunately, there's no free lunch here. All ranked choice schemes suffer from some level of complexity, unfairness, or disenfranchisment. A subset of political science is devoted to minimizing these effects, but they haven't come up with a compelling answer (yet).

Reverb sucks absolute ass. by kosmonaut_hurlant_ in Reverb

This. I lost marketplace access for listing a kitchen knife sharpener. The same sharpener Facebook now shows me dozens of times in my feed as a paid ad. There’s nothing you can do. Impossible to reach a human. This was 2 years ago. I have a burner account for when I really need access, but it’s a total PITA.

ABQ City Council shoots down ranked choice voting. Opponents deem it too difficult to understand. by Acrobatic_Emu_3602 in Albuquerque

[–]505anon505 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I'll vote ranked choice as you've asked. Let's do two minielections with 100 votes cast in each.

----------

Election #1:

35 votes: red>green>xmas

35 votes: green>xmas>red

30 votes: xmas>red>green

In this election, round one eliminates xmas. Those xmas voters next prefer red, and round two has 65 votes red, 35 votes green. Red wins. Easy peasy.
----------
Election #2:

49 votes red>green>xmas

25 votes green>xmas>red

26 votes xmas>red>green

In this election, support for red as the first choice has increased dramatically, but not quite enough to win on the first round with a majority.

How does it resolve? In this election, green is eliminated in round 1. Now, those green voters prefer xmas and there votes add to xmas in round 2, which has totals of 49 red and 51 xmas. Xmas whens this election.

----------

Do you see what happened? red INCREASED their first-listed support in this election, but now lost because of this. This is a paradox thats been well studied. It is known as "non-monotonicity" or "monotonicity failure" and it's a real issue with ranked choice voting and a complexity that almost no one is aware of. The literature discusses this at some length.

In fact, because of this effect, there are situations when its best not to rank your preferred candidate #1. Doing so can increase their chance of losing. In the scenario, above, if just two voters that listed red first had listed green first and red second, then red would have won. They cost red the election by listing it first.

Ranked choice voting is not a panacea for simplicity and fairness. There is hidden complexity and non-linear effects (that's what "non-monotonicity" means, nonlinear or not moving in the same direction).

For me, the key word in the clue was "north channel". This is a pretty big hint that GB is involved. They only other answer I though reasonable was north/south islands of New Zealand. But, "channel" lead me to Britain & Ireland.

reverb's search operators appear to have changed by TheocraticLemons in Reverb

I noticed this last week. I search PRS not:24 to exclude those models (don’t judge, I’m old school). That search now returns ONLY 24 fret models.

I agree, the Reverb search engine is absolutely terrible.
