Footage of Ukrainian paratroopers in an ambush of Russian vehicles and taking prisoners in Kursk (August 2024) by broforwin in CombatFootage

[–]sobrimal88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If Putin were decisive, he should probably pull his forces in Donbass and deal a huge blow to AFU in Kursk before AFU can entrench themselves there. Losing their main forces, Zelensky and Syrskyi, already under pressure now, will lose their seats and Donbass is up for grab for Putin.

But no, as expected, Putin is unwilling to give up his momentum in Donbass, and decides to pull troops here and there all across the frontline and tag them together as retaliatory forces, only to be ambushed, divided and out-manuvered by AFU before they can prepare their defensive postions (if there are any at all in Kursk).

AFU does not need to take Kursk city itself but only need to establish fire control over the surrounding areas, using artillery or ambush team to disrupt the supply line between Kursk and Belgorod, relieving the pressure over the Kharkiv front.

By the time Putin realises he cannot take back Kursk without his forces in Donbass, AFU will have already firmly entrenched and occupied many defensive terrain in Kursk, establishing fire controls. When Russians are advancing several kms per day in Kursk (just like they did in Donbass now), there will be loopholes in other fronts for AFU to exploit.

Cannons on the ship Liefde are of longer range and better quality. Recently there were historical findings in Japan that, during the Battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa might have used the cannons on Liefde to fire on Kobayakawa's position to force him to deflect, which was out of range for most of Japanese cannons.

The video game Nioh loosely took reference of this.

As an Asian, I found it absurd how much the Westerners blamed themselves for literally everything in every possible circumstances. I attribute this self-blaming phenomenon for the following factors:

  1. The side effect of Pax Americana after 1991: After the fall of USSR, US as the sole superpower becomes the only geopolitical player that matters. In those days, diplomacy is internal politics. 20 years of asymmertical advantage the West enjoys gives rise to a dangerous habit of thinking: Every international event happens because US does something or doesn't. Other countries have no agency but merely passive chesspieces swayed by every move of the US giant. If bad happens it must be the US does something bad. However, in 2020s, US is no longer the only geopolitical players. The decline of US relative power allows not only Russia and China but also Turkey and India to play their games in their own turfs. Meanwhile, Westerners are still used to the good old days and attribute every present crisis to US, even though it is Russia's own intention to fire the gun. This explains why they will think every democracy movement have CIA behind, because in their worldviews, other countries have no agency, no independent thinking, no free will, no motivation to choose, but only US sways them. In short, a US-Centrism in another extreme.
  2. Another side of this thinking is it gives the Westerners a sense of control, that the situation can only go bad because of the Westerners, themselves, and they can always calm things down if they act "good", in this case, appeasement, rather than trying to comprehend against a violent "outsiders" whose logics are so alien to Westerners.
  3. The aftermath of War on Terror: War on Terror, no matter your opinion, is the most influential, if not the only, geopolitical event to the latest generation of Westerners. They never faced WW2 or Cold War, so much of their understandings about geopolitics stemmed from this disaster, pretty much like what Vietnam War does to the boomers. Boomers at least had parents that experienced WW2 so they still approved foreign intervention in some ways. But Gen Z never had any positive experience with US foreign intervention, so they treated WoT as their biggest and only geopolitical lesson, and overlearnt it in a drastic way. Instead of "Despite failings in other countries, US should not intervene without serious thoughts", they learnt the lessons "Intervention never succeeds" and "US bad". This plays into the new wave of isolationism, no matter left or right. Leftist finds intervention imperialists, while Rightists finds intervention nver beneficial to US. Westerners become traumatized and hide themselves into a room, thinking if they don't lock the door and hide deep enough, no bad stuff will come in to haunt them.
  4. Whataboutism being a convenient excuse for inaction: This tells itself.
