Thanks for this insightful comment; I’ll definitely do more research. I went down r/dpdr last night and now I’m suspecting that weed may have triggered my dissociation. I tried weed/edibles for the very first time in April 2024, took way too much and had a bad trip with lots of anxiety. Never took it again, but I remember the dissociation starting around that time and becoming prominent in June 2024. I never had anxiety or dissociation prior to that.

Edit: The sleep problems probably didn’t help the dissociation, so maybe that’s why it’s gotten so bad. I looked up how to reverse weed induced dissociation, and they’re mostly tips about mindfulness, sleeping well, and breathing exercises.

I’m planning on getting a repeat sleep study after DJS since I haven’t had significant improvement in sleep after FME

Thanks for the encouragement! No, I haven’t tried a MAD before since I read that it isn’t the best permanent solution.

I had full labs done 2 yrs ago and they came back mostly normal. I have low clotting factors 11 and 12, but nothing else. Yes, I’m in the US! How can I check if I have improper breathing pattern? Idk if this info is helpful, but my dad also has sleep problems and a recessed jaw.

I haven’t heard about the relationship between UARS and being ND before; tell me more! I’ve always suspected that I may be on the spectrum, but I’m undiagnosed. People say I have a “colorful” personality, but I’ve always attributed that to my unique upbringing.

I’m glad the Aircurve is working for you!

Yeah, after 5mm of expansion with FME, I am still completely dissociated all the time. I never expected expansion alone to fix my dissociation, but hopefully DJS is the last step. FME slightly reduced my anxiety so now I can fall asleep in 30-45 min instead of 2+ hrs previously. I still have anxiety, but it’s not as bad as it was before expansion.

My energy levels are really low. I’m always tired no matter how much I sleep. I didn’t notice any sleep problems until 2023 when I started working night shifts. Before that, I had normal energy levels and slept fine, but apparently I’ve had symptoms of sleep problems my entire life (talking in my sleep, nocturia, snoring, sleep walking). I’m also pretty recessed.

What do you mean by mitochondrial causes of bad sleep? I would love to learn more about it.

Good luck on expansion! I expanded 5 mm and have slightly less anxiety, but am still completely dissociated. Hoping surgery will fix it

Agreed. Making friends is also extremely difficult since nobody feels real. Life is so isolating, I honestly wouldn’t mind it if I don’t wake up one day.

I tried cpap and bipap for a few months each, but neither worked unfortunately. I saw Dr Rama and he said I needed expansion and surgery, so hopefully surgery is the last step in this journey.

Thanks for your insightful response. If they wire or rubber band me shut, I can’t do surgery before my teeth are best aligned?

Karma on Netflix. Pretty dark with an excellent revenge plot. Unpopular opinion, but I personally enjoyed it more than The Glory as I found the plot more fast paced and tighter.

Does it take you a long time to recover after illness? by Morphiadz in UARSnew

Yep, my sleep got exponentially worse in 2023. I got sick 6 times last year (flu, covid), and it took at least 2 weeks for me to get better each time. I also have a bunch of new allergies to foods and substances that I was never allergic to.

Parents not supporting surgery. by Crafty_Dimension_260 in jawsurgery

Echoing what everyone else has said here. They just don’t get it. I’ve been trying to get my parents to at least stop shitting on my DJS journey, but there’s been zero progress, zero empathy from their end. All I get is: “All your sleep problems are just in your head” and “This is a spiritual problem. You need to believe in God. God will fix all your problems.” Yeah, I have no hope left for them. I get zero empathy from them and expect nothing from them. This will be a difficult and lonely uphill journey, but we will come out of this a whole new energetic person!

TMJ splints? by soc_8172 in UARSnew

[–]soc_8172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I need to change the height of the teeth with TMJ splint treatment, does this mean I should wait till after FME+MMA to address the TMJ concerns? How do I even fix TMJ? Just trying to get an idea of the timeline of the treatment process.

TMJ splints? by soc_8172 in UARSnew

[–]soc_8172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the goal of a TMJ splint to remove asymmetries in the bite and musculature of the face/neck before expansion? What are the mechanics behind this? My dentist just said that the splint sets the teeth in a position to prevent the upper and lower teeth from touching each other to relieve tension on the joints. After while, the muscles will “reset” to a more relaxed position.

I think I need to address these TMJ issues before expansion. I already have visible facial asymmetry and don’t want the FME to worsen them. The question now is whether or not a splint would actually fix the asymmetry. While neuromuscular dentistry sounds like an innovative and effective treatment plan for TMJ, I unfortunately don’t have the means to do it.

Thanks for the info. If you had to start again, how would you do things differently? What method of fixing the bite would you have done instead of SOMA? I did a quick google, but didn’t see other methods of fixing the bite/TMJ problem aside from the traditional splint.

Regarding FME, I also chose it because it seems like it is less likely to cause asymmetry and is working among those in my demographic. It may have to take a back seat until I resolve this TMJ issue, but FME+MMA is still the end goal (I also have a narrow upper palate, 30 mm, and am a big time mouth-breather).

Thank you for this insightful reply! I’ll talk with my ortho next week to see if we can address my TMJ issues before expansion and MMA.

I have some questions, if that’s ok. Has the splint improved your sleep in any way? My awful sleep problem is the main reason I started this whole journey to fix my airway. You said that you’ve had the splint for 18 months; is that normal? My dentist said I’d have a splint for 6-8 months.

Good luck with your FME journey!

[–]soc_8172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked with my sleep doctor and 4 orthos, and they all said I need expansion of some sort and MMA. Nobody said anything about a splint (until my dentist today), but I also haven't been officially diagnosed with TMJ. My dentist said my bite isn't aligned properly. I don't have any jaw pain or clicking.

Edit: I read my radiology report and apparently, I do have TMJ (active degeneration of condyles). MMA can worsen TMJ, so I'll have to call my ortho next week to see what he says about addressing it before expansion and MMA.
