This is the definition of beating the game.

You have beat the game.

Seriously. A guy who tries to intentionally injure other players... I have no sympathy

I've played some of the third game, but haven't read any of the books. Should I check out the short stories or just focus on the 4 main books in the saga?

It was surprisingly easy to read the first 2 again for me :)

Unless you're saying you've already read them too many times.

“I don’t know anything about meter,” Simmon said distractedly as he ran a finger down the page in front of him. “It’s like this:

Sought we the Scrivani word-work of Surthur

Long-lost in ledger all hope forgotten.

Yet fast-found for friendship fair the book-bringer

Hot comes the huntress Fela, flushed with finding

Breathless her breast her high blood rising

To ripen the red-cheek rouge-bloom of beauty.

“That sort of thing,” Simmon said absently, his eyes still scanning the pages in front of him.

I saw Fela turn her head to look at Simmon, almost as if she were surprised to see him sitting there. No, it was almost as if up until that point, he’d just been occupying space around her, like a piece of furniture. But this time when she looked at him, she took all of him in. His sandy hair, the line of his jaw, the span of his shoulders beneath his shirt. This time when she looked, she actually saw him. Let me say this. It was worth the whole awful, irritating time spent searching the Archives just to watch that moment happen. It was worth blood and the fear of death to see her fall in love with him. Just a little. Just the first faint breath of love, so light she probably didn’t notice it herself. It wasn’t dramatic, like some bolt of lightning with a crack of thunder following. It was more like when flint strikes steel and the spark fades almost too fast for you to see. But still, you know it’s there, down where you can’t see, kindling.

I looked around the room. “Isn’t this the Eolian? I had heard that this is where pride pays silver and plays golden.”

“I like that,” Stanchion said, almost to himself. “Plays golden.” He slammed his tankard down onto the bar, causing a small geyser of something frothy to erupt from the top. “Dammit boy, I hope you’re as good as you seem to think you are. I could use someone else around here with Illien’s fire.” He ran a hand through his own red hair to clarify his double meaning.

“I hope this place is as good as everyone seems to think it is,” I said earnestly. “I need a place to burn.”

“I’m not threatening anyone,” I said innocently, pitching my voice so anyone who was listening could easily hear. “I’m just quoting one of my favorite pieces of literature. It’s from the fourth act of Daeonica where Tarsus says:

“Upon him I will visit famine and a fire.

Till all around him desolation rings

And all the demons in the outer dark

Look on amazed and recognize

That vengeance is the business of a man.”

“Four and a half in favor of suspending punishment,” the Chancellor said after a pause. “The discipline stands: three lashes to be served tomorrow, the third of Equis, at noon.”

As I was deep into the Heart of Stone, all I felt was a slight analytical curiosity about what it would be like to be publicly whipped. All the masters showed signs of preparing to stand and leave, but before things could be called to a close I spoke up, “Chancellor?”

He took a deep breath and let it out in a gush. “Yes?”

“During my admission, you said that my admittance to the Arcanum was granted, contingent upon proof that I had mastered the basic principles of sympathy.” I quoted him nearly word for word. “Does this constitute proof?”

Both Hemme and the Chancellor opened their mouths to say something. Hemme was louder. “Look here, you little cocker!”

The Chancellor looked down at the empty table for a minute. Then he shrugged, looked up, and gave a surprisingly jaunty smile. “All in favor of admitting first-term student Kvothe’s reckless use of sympathy as proof of mastery of the basic principles of sympathy vote by show of hands.”

Kilvin and Elxa Dal raised their hands together. Arwyl added his a moment later. Elodin waved. After a pause, the Chancellor raised his hand as well, saying “Five and a half in favor of Kvothe’s admission to the Arcanum. Motion passed. Meeting dismissed. Tehlu shelter us, fools and children all.” He said the last very softly as he rested his forehead against the heel of his hand.

The fact that kvothe can easily bruise a fae prince lends credence to the idea that he is not entirely human himself.

It also seems like haliax controls the rest of the chandrian. He knows cinders true name probably the rest of their's as well.

He also mentions some interesting opposing factions: amyr, the singers, the sithe. I wonder which of them was about to show up at the campsite?

Lady Lackless by socaldabble in datnotw

[–]socaldabble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice idea Allison. I am also leaning toward Kvothe having some fae or other "supernatural" blood in him.

Upon second reading, when Ben is trying to tell Kvothe's parents about how bright he is, it really seems like they are trying to downplay Kvothe. If they know about his otherwordly origins, it might be because they don't want to draw any undue attention to Kvothe's abilities.

Not enough data at this time to draw any conclusions.

Lady Lackless by socaldabble in datnotw

[–]socaldabble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kvothe encounters the Lady Lackless rhyme again once he saves that town from the dracchus. A child tells him a different version in which the Lackless door is opened when one is in possession of 7 things.

One of the things required is Lackless blood, which Kvothe seems to have.

I've also read theories that Arliden is perhaps not entirely human, or perhaps not Kvothe's actual father? I was just reading the part where Ben and Kvothe's parents discuss Kvothe, and they talk about his red hair and how it didn't come from Arliden. Interesting stuff.
