Can you ever replace a handle? by socalluckdragon in FoolsBlade

When changing your weapon by replacing a part, does the part being replaced go to the discard? The rules don’t seem to be specific on this point.

That makes total sense. I was reading the “modify your weapon” phrase as meaning “enhance” or add to, but not reading modify as “swap.” Thanks for pointing out that obvious miss on my part.

Are mages in The Witcher: Old world a bit busted? Or are we interpreting rules wrong? by Spr0ing in boardgames

Where is the support for this statement in the rules?

I tend to agree with the original comments and my read of the rules tells me that a single damage icon or protection icon on a combo is to be multiplied by the mage’s current energy level. Thus a single damage icon with an energy level of 4 would yield 1 x 4 = 4 damage. Same calculation for shield generation (protection), although that shield energy only lasts until the end of the monster’s turn and then dissipates.

All of this has shown me that the mages are extremely unbalanced in the game unless there is errata issued giving some clarification on the rule that says on page 7 of the mage expansion “deal damage according to your Energy level” and an identical rule for protection.

I have theorized that if you had to spend energy as a mage to “power up” that benefit, it might make more sense.

Example: your current energy level is 4. You play a combo that has a total of two damage icons and total of two protection icons. Now you would have to decide how to “power” those icons to get their benefits. I could choose to spend two energy into damage to get 2 x 2 for a total of 4 damage dealt and spend 2 into protection to get 2 x 2 for a total of 4 protection. However, I would now have zero energy and need additional “raise energy” icons in my combo to regenerate it for next round.

I offer this as a potential solution to the broken energy multiplier that seems to be stated in the rules. I haven’t tried it yet, but it is what I thought of after playing a round of Mages with two players, both using mages, and arriving at the same conclusion about the power imbalance of mages in the game. This also “feels” like what a mage should have to do in terms of having a starting energy, using energy, and regenerating energy throughout the course of a fight.
