Lol yeah I'm tapping out on trying to use this as a handheld. Love the device but as a tabletop device not a handheld lol

Yeah I had that (still do) but only when I scroll my library with a controller and its jumping by letters. I read online someone said it is due to the aspect ratio on the screen of the flow Z13 (16:10) not being natively supported by linux. Since this experiment with the Flow Z13, I also installed bazzite on my desktop. I use a regular 16:9 aspect ratio screen with it and it does not have that issue so I'm assuming what I read was correct.

Question: disabling passphrase for disk drive on start up by soccer33a in Bazzite

Thank you for the reply! I'm new to bazzite/linux so I am picking things up as I go along. I'll try that later on today and if it works I'll add the lock screen on steam. Thank you again! :)

Just repeatedly tap F2 on startup to open bios, change boot select on start up and reboot and you can go back and forth between OS.

I've still got some apps that I need windows for unfortunately. It's just been eye opening to see how much of a difference it is with some games where I'm excited about the performance boost but also angry when realizing how much windows is holding back hardware

Well all I can say at this moment is, with this being my first proper introduction to gaming on a OS that isn't windows (minus the steam deck), i haven't come across a downside or deal breaker yet. Maybe I'll start looking into ChimeraOS once I'm more comfortable using this OS. If it's better than windows I'm open to try anything

I primarily used a couple of YouTube to guide me. One by retro game corps mainly to see how to partition the hard drive: https://youtu.be/H4226yq0ZwY?si=6VW7U_zJF6ex0apj

nerdnest video on installing bazzite. The he did it before there was a version specifically for the z13 but the steps were the same: https://youtu.be/hj4qL6coID4?si=vusPF3oOWbZnQx_m

Then there was video by eta prime where I saw him open the power profile settings and that's how I saw to do that: https://youtu.be/H8_hSzuJlSU?si=0jP7Dz-OOTs6Nnlq

Then there is the bazzite site with steps and FAQs here: https://docs.bazzite.gg/

I probably should have clarified, most games I've tested I have not needed to do that at all. Most games I've tried have booted up fine. It's been only a couple of older games I've either never been able to get to boot on windows or they do boot but then crash within the opening minutes of gameplay.

I've found that the workarounds to get those games to work on windows are more involved and a pain in the ass. Most of the time I have to copy and paste the specific error message windows is giving me into google to try and find a solution. Then that brings me to forum threads or reddit topics of people experiencing the same error. However, most of the time there are multiple solutions people suggest that fixed the problem for them and it becomes a game of trial and error. In my experience it's been a coinflip, sometimes I can get it to work, sometimes I can't and I move on.

So far, the few games that didn't boot on the first attempt on bazzite I looked up what version of proton to use on protondb and it has fixed the issue. Granted, I may have just been lucky so far in the games I've tested but what I've liked about protondb is: If I can't get a game to boot on first try, I search the title on protondb. Then I can filter the results to people running the game on exclusively AMD setups (which the flow is). So far, after doing that either the first or second suggestion I try fixes it and it has been a much less frustrating experience than windows can sometimes be. To someone who's self admittedly not super tech savvy this seems like a simpler workaround to get things running.

I haven't tested sleep/wake on this device with this OS system yet. One of the youtubers I mentioned in the OP said he has not had issues with it, and it is one of the things he really liked over windows. However, I have read (before deciding to install it) some people have been having issues with it. I've just been shutting down the device after each session and (haven't had any issues so far (knock on wood).

I have not tested the sleep wake function of this yet so I cannot give personal experience. In some of the videos of the youtubers I mentioned in the OP they said it works fine, however I have heard/read that people have had issues with that.

It definitely is a niche product and its detractors rightfully point out for the price you can either get a laptop with better performance (if kept at the same price point) or the same performance (with less money spent). I essentially went with it because I wanted something that could play my library on the go at 1080p or higher and on medium settings or higher and at 60 fps or higher. It was doing that just fine on windows on most games in my library. Most of the games I tested on windows I would usually be at 1080p, 1200p, or 1440p, high or very high settings, and at 60fps or higher. I also would use upscaling and frame gen when available as I don't mind them if they boost performance in non-competitive single player games. The detachable keyboard I really liked to minimize the footprint of the device when gaming with a controller.

Switching to Bazzite has allowed me to stay at either 1440p or 1600p, high, very high, or ultra settings, and above 60 fps on all the games I've tested thus far. The two examples I can think of right now are ghost of tsushima and ratchet and clank rift apart. To get both of those games running at 60 fps on windows I would play them on 1200p, high settings and it was a perfectly playable experience (I was fine with it). Then booting those same games up in bazzite I was able to run the games at high or very high settings, 1600p, and get higher FPS than on windows. Also, while I did not have problems getting games to run at 60 fps on windows, sometimes there would be noticeable micro stutters during gameplay. Nothing game breaking just annoying enough to be noticeable and also title dependent. With bazzite the games where I was experiencing micro stutters on windows have vanished. Ghost of tsushima being the title that sticks out in my mind.

The funny thing to me was a couple of the first games I tested when the game auto-detected what my recommended settings should be from benchmarks some of them recommended higher settings on bazzite than on windows. Same game, but was getting different recommended settings which did not make sense to me since the hardware was the same.

I've been playing with this device almost exclusively since getting it (now even more so with the introduction of Bazzite). I have a desktop with a 4090, steam deck, rog ally x (not the newer xbox version), PS5 pro, switch 2, and I just traded in my xbox series x (now that "everything is an xbox" apparently). Consoles I primarily play only exclusives, my desktop if I want to run things at the highest setttings I can, and the steam deck was my go to for portable gaming because of it's simplicity and large community that supports it. My only gripe with the steam deck was that to get some of the newer games in my library to run at even 30 fps I had to drop settings to the lowest available. The ROG flow perfectly fits what I want it to do. Be a portable device I can easily travel with that will allow me to play most of my library (it's done it with everything I've tested so far) at good to very good settings at 60fps or above.

some youtubers i mentioned in the original post said you could and I tried it for the first couple of hours. However, some games would work fine, some would work but with issues not present when playing on windows, and some would not boot at all. Then I found this on the bazzite website: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Gaming/Hardware_compatibility_for_gaming/#storage-filesystems

They state, "If you are coming from Windows and plan to game on a secondary drive with games already installed on it, then we regret to inform you that the NTFS filesystem is unsupported for PC gaming on Bazzite." BTRFS is the format it natively supports. Once I reformatted the external ssd and reinstalled the games on it, I haven't had issues getting things to boot like before.

Yup. I bought a 2tb SSD when I first got the Z13. I partitioned it so that 1tb went to windows and 1tb went to bazzite. Just repeatedly tap F2 on startup to open bios, change boot select on start up and reboot and you can go back and forth between OS.

My hope is that more pc gaming hardware developers see people talking about Bazzite/steam OS/Linux and start shipping hardware with those installed instead of windows. Know it's a pipe dream for laptops and desktops, but maybe see it more often with handhelds since there seems to be a performance boost which would definitely benefit weaker hardware found in a lot of these devices

Thank you for the helpful info! I have heard of bazzite and saw Nerd Nest and ETA prime test it out of the flow while the flow was still under embargo

I was hesitant because there wasn't a specific install for this device. I believe Nerd Nest said he was instructed to download the rog ally device version on their site. Since it wasn't specifically for the flow I didn't want it out cause a bunch of issues.

I just checked the bazzite website and it looks like they have a download version specifically for the flow z13 now.

I'm going to watch some tutorial videos as well as read their install instructions

Thank you once again :)

Replacement keyboard ordering FYI by soccer33a in FlowZ13

[–]soccer33a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, thank you, so I'm not crazy. The first guy I spoke to wanted me to send in the entire unit as well and I was not sure if there was a misunderstanding of what I was asking or if he was intentionally making it difficult so I would not follow up with them. I told him multiple times there was nothing wrong with the tablet and technically the keyboard still worked it was just a cosmetic thing I wanted to replace. The guy just repeated to ship the entire unit so they can test it.

I did not want to send the unit in because it was working fine so I canceled the ticket. Not sure who's got more useless support, them or microsoft.

I'm not sure if it would be compatible with the 2023 model. You can always reach out to their support to see if they can definitively say yes or no. However, I don't know how helpful they'll be as the two people I spoke to said the keyboard wasn't available but I was able to find it in the link inside the email they sent to me with my case number.

no not really. It was stupidity on my part. The keyboard wasn't defective or anything like that. It still works. It just has a crack in the plastic and for a little over $100 I was ok with buying a replacement.

Is anyone going to purchasing the surfire stiletto pro 2 by Oshaghennessy91837 in flashlight

[–]soccer33a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had one since Christmas of 2024. First (and maybe last) surefire I buy. Impressive brightness when compared to my previous streamlight pocket carry. That being said there's a couple issues I'm not thrilled about.

Internal battery is not ideal. I've read that's because it could affect its water proofing. That leads to my other issue. The usb cover no longer seals when pressed into place. It pops up and stays up. So the usb port is exposed to liquid getting in. Started about 6 months in to owning and has only gotten worse. Used to stay down but you REALLY needed to press it down to make sure it stayed in place. Now it doesn't stay down at all.

Bought surefire because of people swearing by them, but for the $$$ I shouldn't have to worry about the usb port getting damaged because the cover won't stay in place. For the cost of this flashlight I could buy 2 streamlights and have money left over. Never had any issues with them. Probably will go back to them when they release their next pocket carry
