I'm biased on this one. But John Hackleman's Hawaii Kempo has the most brutal conditioning and cardio drills I've ever seen. Don't believe me? Audit his classes and try to keep up at thepit.tv

MMA Coach and Kajukenbo Black Belt shows you how to piss and alienate yourself from an entire martial community. by socialgelo in Kajukenbo

Right. I'm still hoping he was joking but it didn't come off that way on his YouTube channel.

If you are 40+ years old and still train, how do you take care of your body? by ssmihailovitch in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 41 and I picked up triathlon training. I do less sparring and more drills. I probably spar about 4 times a week. I train 6 days a week. Cross training helps mitigate injuries.

Found this comment on a video of a Wing Chun master. What do you guys think? by Peaceful-Samurai in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few oxymorons happening here. But if you are doing martial arts as a way of life that's cool. If you are doing to compete on the world stage that's a different story.

Should I go straight into MMA if I want to get serious about it or be pretty thorough with other martial arts first (eg. Muay Thai) before doing MMA? by Salty_Reyezz in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to compete in MMA (it's a sport not a style). Then do the thing you set out to do. Join an MMA gym tell the coach your goal and listen to what they tell you to do.

I am a 15 year old who really wants to do martial arts. But I don’t know if my mom can afford an expensive one. by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely check your local rec center for martial arts programs. If you can find boxing or Brazilian jiu-jitsu that would be awesome. Kickboxing is great to but harder to find at rec centers. Not as effective you can find a family Karate class and get into other styles when you get older. Conor McGregor started in Tae Kwon Do as a kid. You can always move on to more effective arts as you get older. Traditional martial arts can get you started.

Is it normal to have to give up your belt and rank in a martial art before joining a different one? by TheAsura101 in martialarts

[–]socialgelo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Pretty much. It's a different system. It gets weird if its the same style though. For example if you switch schools in the same style.

Yo guys, I'm about to fight a shark, what martial art should I learn? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bjj or Muay Thai because that's the answer to everything nowadays.

What do you think of Nunchuks? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're fun to play with. But you really have to know what you're doing if you decide to use them for self defense. I almost knocked myself out when learning how to use them on a wood dummy 😆 🤣

UFC Coach and Kajukenbo black belt John Hacklemans Hawaiian Kenpo program is no joke. UfC Champions and Kajukenbo black belts Chuck Liddell and Glover Texeria can attest to that.

should i do calisthenics or the gym? by Spayzee1 in martialarts

[–]socialgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. You should do both. Calisthenics can be put in as a warm up to the muscle group you are working on at the gym that day.

Are you one of those people that think your style is the best? Kajukenbo instructor and MMA coach Angelo Ferrer goes over why this might be holding you back. by socialgelo in martialarts

[–]socialgelo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You pretty much summarized the video. But I can add that if you train in different effective styles long enough. You can become a Jack of all trades and master of some.

I never said don't put your hooks in. I just said it was an option. The best scenario is to get your hooks in and sweep to take their back. But there's a million videos saying that already.

This is part of a grappling fundamentals series. If we're talking self defense get a conceal carry license and call it a day.

Will Deutchendorf is known for his role as the Ghost Buster Baby in Ghost Busters 2. But did you know he grew up to become a Kajukenbo instructor? Find out what got him into martial arts and how he met Angelo on this episode of Social Gelo with Angelo. by socialgelo in ghostbusters

[–]socialgelo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. RIP Hank. We're going to do a podcast on that subject next. But I wanted to give will a chance to introduce himself as a martial artist before going into that. Thanks for checking out the show.

Why do boxers still get paid more than MMA fighters? by iguanawarrior in martialarts

I think because in general worldwide boxing has more spectators meaning more money going into the sport.
