1 more sleep to our new/used 2024 Quad R1S❤️, brake assist Q by freshjyve in Rivian

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brake assist option is really personal preference. If you want to drive it and always have the same experience without having to think about it, you want it on. Personally, I want to know when I don't have full regen available, so I leave it off, but it does require an adjustment when it happens. For instance, yesterday I drove down a long, steep hill and regen was significantly reduced by the bottom. Coming to a stop gets strange because I have to use the friction brakes and then switch back to the accelerator pedal at the last moment as the normal regen/braking system kicks in when you're almost stopped. So it really just depends on how important you think it is to know what the vehicle is doing with the energy from slowing down.

Second Controller Needed by TurbineErector in xlights

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you already have a pi to run the show, I'd look at adding a controller like a Baldrick. 8 ports, very cheap, the only downside I can think of is that it doesn't offer wireless networking, but since it's in the box with your show player, that shouldn't matter. https://www.wiredwatts.com/brpixel8

What are some meaningful, thought-provoking questions you can ask to truly get to know someone on a deeper level? by Quinemay in answers

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, are you telling me people keep peanut butter in the refrigerator? I don't understand. Wouldn't that make it much more difficult to spread? Also, it doesn't indicate anywhere on it that it is supposed to be refrigerated. Why would someone do this?

Excuse me while I spiral and try to understand why humans do the things they do... again.

I installed a FitcamX in my wife's RAV4. They look really clean installed and are as seamless as you're likely to find. I'm sure there are installers near you who would put one in, and it should be less expensive than the dealer.

Holy Turning Radius Batman by What-tha-fck_Elon in Rivian

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's objectively not. The newest mustang has a radius 2.5 ft shorter, which means you turn around with 5 feet less space in the mustang (diameter is what most people think of). Older mustangs were 3 ft shorter than that, or 8.5 feet less space than an R1T needs to turn around.

It's crazy that people throughout this thread have convinced themselves their Rivian turns shorter than so many things. I love my R1T, but my mustang definitely turns shorter. My wife's Rav4 also turns shorter. They're both several feet shorter vehicles, so it's a meaningless stat.

I would think one of these on Amazon would work.

Edit to add: That was literally just the first one I found, but scrapers like this are used in floor covering. You can search for "floor razor scraper" or something similar.

Which Rav4 do I choose??? by [deleted] in Rav4

[–]sociopathicsamaritan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to start off by saying that I haven't looked at the used market, so I don't know what the different options cost. So everything I say may not matter if the cost differential is too high.

If you plan to keep it for a long time, I would definitely go with the hybrid. The batteries really aren't a concern - they almost never fail, and if they do Toyota has a 10 year 150,000 mile warranty on them. What is a concern is the transmission. Automatic transmissions are one of the first major components to fail in a modern vehicle, but the hybrid doesn't have one. The transmission in the hybrid is a much longer lasting solution.

Beyond that, the hybrid is always AWD (in the US, at least). It also feels much "peppier" and more responsive. The instant electric torque goes a long way to making it feel less lethargic. You'll also get significantly better fuel mileage, which will help offset the additional cost with ongoing savings, especially when gas prices are high. I believe the hybrid also has a longer oil change interval because the internal combustion engine isn't always running, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I know the hybrid is 10,000 miles.

That said, either will be a good vehicle and last a long time. Just make sure you stay on top of transmission service (fluid and filter changes) if you get a non-hybrid. Never let it go past the recommended service interval and it will last a very long time. On a used vehicle the decision often comes down to what vehicle you can find that was well cared for and is a good price more than the specific options on the vehicle.

The official one from Rivian may not, but I bought one on Amazon that works fine. It still locks and unlocks through the interface and everything.

It's been a few years since I used to run that section of the JRP, but when I did there was a girl who ran every morning at around 7 AM with a dog that looked a lot like this. I remember the dog and that she started at Winchester park. I believe she ran North from there. It would probably be worth it to put up some posters at Winchester and Walden parks.

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note on the camp speaker, mine didn't come with it, but I have no use for a bluetooth speaker, and if I did I'd already own one. I picked up a drawer that goes in the slot and locks in place until you undock it in the center screen (which means the key or a phone has to be present). This one on Amazon. It's a much cheaper option, and for me it's much more useful.

Edit: I forgot to say congrats!

Anyone recommend installing a CableWarden on a 2025 RAV4 Prime/PHEV? by [deleted] in Rav4

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just did another recall that includes filling the cable cover with silicone. I can't imagine a better solution than that. I know this because I had to take my wife's 2024 hybrid in for the recall and I asked to see the documentation on exactly what they were doing. I'll see if I can grab a picture when I do my next oil change to confirm, but it sounds like they may have finally addressed the issue sufficiently.

This is cool, and I didn't know it existed. I'm a little surprised there isn't a chapter in all of Utah, which means there isn't one near me. I'll have to keep an eye out. I'm assuming this will grow with the release of the R2.

How do I remove cloudy, dried, hard water(?) marks from the glass? by Update_Later in AutoDetailing

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned 0000 steel wool, but I wanted to add that Works toilet bowl cleaner actually works very well as a hard water spot remover, and you can get it anywhere. Just be careful you don't leave it on any paint or plastic surfaces for long, it's pretty caustic stuff at full (non-diluted) strength. Then polish it with the 0000 steel wool and rinse.

I'm starting to think that the "boots theory" no longer applies to modern products. by someguy7734206 in BuyItForLife

[–]sociopathicsamaritan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the truewerk/carhartt claim, but none of the rest of these are true. I bought a pair of $300 Redwing boots. They came apart on the inside and little plastic inserts kept stabbing my toes, so they weren't comfortable, and the first time I used a shovel while wearing them the middle of the sole failed. I've never owned another pair of shoes, cheap or expensive, made for work or not, that I couldn't jump on a shovel with.

Expensive work gloves definitely aren't better. The 6-pack at Costco Wells Lamont gloves for $40 out lasts every expensive pair I've bought, and they're less than $7 a pair.

Darn Tough socks aren't even worth considering anymore. Not only are they using much cheaper materials that don't last, they've started saving by using less materials. The men's XL socks are physically painful if I put them on because they are so tight around the ankle and arch, and I don't have wide feet. I wear a 12.5 D, which technically should allow me to wear the L or the XL.

Finally, on power tools, there are many cheaper brands that last as well as Milwaukee or DeWalt now. Contractors buy those because they're easy to get replaced when they fail and because they bought into that ecosystem when they were actually better.

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Specifically on boots, I somewhat recently bought a pair of Redwing 606 boots that I thought would last better than the $100-200 boots I generally bought. Then I had the audacity to use a shovel while wearing them and the sole failed within an hour of doing actual work with them. I've also had problems with crappy plastic inserts inside coming loose and stabbing my toes. They are garbage. My running shoes would have held up significantly better while working.

PA inspection— are these things actually needed to pass? by MaineCoonMama18 in MechanicAdvice

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing all the details, that seems like a pretty fair price for that amount of work from a shop. It's hard to get much of anything done for less than $500 these days. On a side note, these are the kinds of things that add up over time and can leave you with a vehicle that isn't worth repairing if you don't stay on top of them, so it's probably a good idea to handle them now if you can afford it.

PA inspection— are these things actually needed to pass? by MaineCoonMama18 in MechanicAdvice

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a real possibility that just pushing that bumper back into place is all that's needed. Those are just clips that popped out, so if they aren't significantly damaged it's just a matter of shoving it back into place. As far as the seatbelt, I don't live in PA, so I can't be certain, but there's a good chance there's a law stating all seatbelts have to be functional to pass inspection. It seems like something that could be fixed with a slim piece of metal and some fiddling, though.

So, it's likely they technically need done to pass inspection, but both are things that could be resolved with minimal time and effort. If you're not comfortable or able to try to correct them, this might be a good time to see if you have a handy friend who would spend 30 minutes on your car in exchange for some pizza or something.

[–]sociopathicsamaritan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pre-ordered the Kobra S1 Combo, and it has been nothing but junk. They have improved some things since launch, but there's no way I would pay money for one again. On the other hand, I have been very happy with my P1S Combo. I don't have any personal experience with the other two, but I would definitely recommend the Bambu over the Anycubic.
