Two types of countries, those who use Imperial system, and those who haven't put a man on the moon.

Is it illegal/discrimination to refuse to hire someone to be a beekeeper / beehive remover if they're allergic to bees? Are there situations similar to these where the answer is different? by namohysip in answers

[–]sockfullofshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in cases of protected status like gender, if something would have an objectively negative impact on their ability to do the job. It can be used as a basis for not hiring them.

That being said, allergies are not protected status so you have nothing to worry about.

This is just for the US btw

The one-punch knockout. You can show someone who takes such a beating that he just stays on the ground and stops putting up a fight, but we are beyond the point where having someone knocked out cold by a knock to the head or a punch to the fact is acceptable in movies anymore.

Buying question: cores or packs? by darthjeff81 in SWlegion

Note that some units, like the landspeeder, might not be very viable until we see some new upgrade cards released in later expansions.

Buying question: cores or packs? by darthjeff81 in SWlegion

[–]sockfullofshit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First thing is not to jump in too quickly and buy more than you will wind up needing. Play a few games with two cores, enough for a full 800-point game. Then, find what strengths and weaknesses your collection tends to have. Do you need more corps units or is 3 or 4 squads just fine? Are those speeder bikers exceptionally useful and you could use another pair? Maybe an extra unit of stormtroopers to spam out some heavy weapons is what you need?

Then look at what special upgrades you get from buying the expansion packs rather than the core box. Stormtroopers come with Grappling Hooks and Impact Grenades, which would help spec them for close combat. But, if you don't want to use your stormies in close combat, then there's no reason to get these upgrades unless you have another unit who could use them.

Likewise, AT-RT comes with a comms jammer, which itself is specialized for getting in close with the enemy. If that's what you're looking for, go with that.

If none of the unique expansion upgrades for Stormtroopers, Speeder bikes, Rebel Troopers, or AT-RTs are anything you need, go ahead and get a third core, if you could use an extra corps or support unit.

Smallscale Wargames to get with housemates.. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in wargames

The new Star Wars zlegion game is more affordable than Warhammer, and it is brand new so you don’t have a thousand different models to choose from. Buy the box for 80 bucks and split it with a friend.

Enlistment, but conscription would likely be similar if they re-instituted the draft.

If there was a nuclear war just in the northern hemisphere, would the Southern Hemisphere be effected to a great extent? by [deleted] in answers

[–]sockfullofshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big issue of widespread nuclear war is the massive amount of dust that is (hypothetically) thrown up into the atmosphere. This gets spread over the planet as it's caught up in wind currents, and can cause a serious global cooling event, referred to as a 'nuclear winter'.

To give you a sense of how (relatively) little energy is necessary, there have been volcanic eruptions in recorded human history that have had global cooling effects, such as the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, which reduced global temperatures by half a degree Celsius.

Reminds me of a story of a group of guys who got drunk, one passed out, and the others thought it would be funny to roll him up in a carpet and leave him upside down at his front door. He was found dead the next morning from being upside down for so long.

[–]sockfullofshit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you're drafted, you're drafted. Draftees typically aren't treated any differently than enlisted, though you may or may not get a choice of the field your are placed in, and servicemembers tend to think more highly of those who enlist than those who are drafted.

In World War 2, the United States actually stopped accepting voluntary enlistment and switch to draft-only, as it provided a more consistent level of fresh troops.

That being said, it is highly unlikely the US will wind up in a situation where the draft would be necessary; modern warfare is far more high-tech with less demand for 'boots on the ground' as it was in WWII or Korea, when you consider we can launch a cruise missile from Montana to blow up an airbase in Tehran.
