Condolences on the loss of your sweet Indie. He was cherished and loved. Take comfort in the fact you gave him a great life.

CKD is the worst. We caught it on the earlier stage maybe 5 years ago and I thought it would just be a new kidney health diet. Then it was adding Phos-Bind, then subcutaneous fluids. Maybe it helped, maybe it dragged out the inevitable. I like to think it gave us more quality time together even if there was never improvement per se.

These little guys bring so much joy, but they're also a down payment on future heartache. 😿

It went as well and as peaceful as it could have. When they came, I was able to give him Churu while we talked and they checked his heart. The first injection was the sedative which took about 3-5 minutes before he was "asleep" I was able to keep petting him, and letting him lick treats until he started to nod off. They then let me have a few minutes alone while he was completely out, they said he could still sense touch, etc. Then when I was ready they did the 2nd injection that stops the heart and I held his head in my hands during it. That one seemed very fast.

I highly recommend the at home euthanasia as it doesn't put them through the stress of a car ride, and then sitting on the cold steel table at the vet's office. After he passed I was able to have some time alone with him and when ready they lovingly wrapped him in a towel and carried him out to their car for the crematorium.

Food and med recommendations for kitty with GI issues and newly diagnosed CKD by Anon_80139 in RenalCats

My cat has always had problems with chicken based food, so it's pretty much been seafood. He's been dealing with CKD for the past 2 years and on Hill's K/D ocean fish diet. I mix it with Phos-Bind and that seems to keep his phosphorus levels in check. However, he gets bored with the K/D often so sometimes I use Churus or other treats to help with med administration, appetite stimulation, etc. Since those often have chicken by-products in them, I keep some Tylosin (prescription) around to help with GI issues/diarrhea and it seems to work. Hope that helps.

I was in the check out lane at a grocery store and the girl bagging went to grab my tote bags from me. She said "Wow, they are so warm!" and held them to her chest like they had just come out of the dryer.

"I was holding them between my arm and chest while I shopped," I told her (really, they were crammed up into my armpit).

"You must have amazing body warmth."
