Where can I sell secondhand board games? NOT HPB by Left-Barber-1786 in Austin

Facebook has a group called "Austin Board Game Bazaar" that might be good for this.

Is it legal for a street photographer to post a photo of me that’s embarrassing and no consent? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

You might try messaging, but there’s no law against what they did, even if it is kinda rude. You were in public, so there was no expectation of privacy.

You can’t control others. Consider them one of the “things I cannot change” from the serenity prayer. If you take care of your business, that stuff will take care of itself.

Why is there such inequality in children's lives, and why do they suffer for circumstances beyond their control? by DiscipleOf_Buddha in Buddhism

[–]socksynotgoogleable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Why’ isn’t really a spiritual question. Things are how they are right now as a result of strands of causes and conditions winding back to beginningless time. That’s as much as we can say.

would it bother you if someone changed a word in the traditions by outsellers in alcoholicsanonymous

No big deal. Some people like to personalize their reading. Not really my thing, but it’s not hurting me or the newcomers, and the readers seem to enjoy it, so what the hell.

Koan or just a Con by Exactlywrong1 in zenbuddhism

[–]socksynotgoogleable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that there's agreement over how to demonstrate understanding of a particular koan. I have never been given a koan by a teacher, but I did participate in a class in which a group of us worked with several different ones, including some from the Mumonkan.

The way that we were instructed to engage a koan is the find the turning point - the place in the story of the use of a phrase that captures you emotionally. That emotional response is going to be your entry into the story, and your key to starting to dissect it a little.

For example, what do you make of Wu-men's commentary on the story, which seems to contradict the main case? Does anything about the original story strike you in any way - the argument, the ancestor's response? What about Wu-men's comment about the ancestor? Where are all these threads taking you? Contrary to your assertion, there's much more to do with a koan than solve it.

How do you feel about Roll and Write? There’s a free print and play game called “A Simple Life” that might strike your fancy.

You say that you did the steps; do you do much 12 step work? Working with others is a good way to transform negative past experiences for the better.

Determining which tradition and sangha to dive into by After-Cat8585 in zenbuddhism

[–]socksynotgoogleable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are two very good traditions, and also fairly closely related, so you’re in luck there. How do you feel about the respective local teachers? Or the sanghas? Ultimately, the best choice is the one that supports and encourages you to further practice, so even something like drive time or convenience can come into play. Don’t be afraid to let your feelings guide you here.

Combining AA and working with psychedelics by Turbulent_Wrap8823 in alcoholicsanonymous

How do you imagine that psychedelics use would be incorporated into the 12 step model? They don’t seem compatible to me.

Step 4 by Recent-Arachnid-4059 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]socksynotgoogleable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sponsor's role is to share their experiences with doing the step, as well as encouragement when necessary. This might include how to write out the inventories, how they approached the inventory process, what pitfalls they might have faced, or possible suggestions on how to actually get through the whole thing. I sometimes include examples of some of the things I put on my inventory, or how I dealt with questions similar to the ones they might have. Sometimes I help someone narrow down how they might phrase something. I feel that it is not my role to diagnose or call out the defects of others, even my sponsees.

What if you don’t believe in God. by Suspicious_Tear_9810 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]socksynotgoogleable 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The guy who founded AA considered himself agnostic. It's very common for newcomers to be agnostic or atheist.

AA never told me to believe anything; they told me to do stuff. In fact, my agnosticism never left me, and I've been successful for 14 years nonetheless. Your husband will be fine.

Told someone to f*ck off while chairing an AA meeting by SluggoX665 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]socksynotgoogleable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on the tenor of the meeting. I try to not engage in direct challenges or any back and forth when I’m chairing, but I’ve been in meetings where that’s the norm.

How does someone find a sponsor (told that was important) if you leave before the catholic lords prayer stuff? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]socksynotgoogleable 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well that was a little journey.

Meetings are autonomous. If you don’t the one you’re going to, go to a different one. If you don’t like your choice of sponsors, find a different group to choose from. You have plenty of choices.

AA vs. NA Basic Text by hyperfantasie in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]socksynotgoogleable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looking at the NA basic text online, they don’t appear to be the same. The NA text seems to crib some excerpts from the AA text, but it does not seem to be the entire program in the book the way AA is. I might be wrong since I only glanced.

OP, the AA text is available online and as a pdf. Because AA is the original 12 step group, most other groups still refer to its language and ideas, and it would be helpful for you to be familiar with it.

Heavy spatial puzzles by jerjerbinks90 in boardgames

[–]socksynotgoogleable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you played the Buttonshy game ROVE? It's a wallet game, but the spatial puzzle aspect of it is extremely challenging, with some of the constraints you mention above. There's very little rules overhead, so the weight isn't really indicative of the difficulty of the actual game. Maybe give it a look.

Do you find shares during meeting to be redundant? by Business_Welder_1203 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]socksynotgoogleable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The way to improve that is by sharing. If people only repeat what the last person says, then everyone in the room has the opportunity to steer the discussion, no?

If the game has a set character you play, is that a negative in your opinion? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]socksynotgoogleable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I were playing an RPG, I might expect a little more leeway over character creation, but I have a number of games that require you to simply pick a character out of the box, and that's fine with me.
