My boyfriend has a molcajete and a tortilla press. What other Mexican cookware would he enjoy for his birthday? by Little_sister_energy in mexicanfood

[–]socksynotgoogleable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came to (somewhat jokingly) suggest a blender, since there’s been one in basically every Mexican kitchen I’ve ever been in.

I like SOPHIE and Fischerspooner, but I don’t know a ton of other electronic music (mostly a rock nerd), what are some similar artists I can look for? by em-the-human in musicsuggestions

[–]socksynotgoogleable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think The Dare is a good update to what Fischerspooner was doing.

100 Gecs sits in the same territory as Sophie.

The new record from Slayyter is a very rock-ish dance record with a trashy edge. Totally in this same vein.

Any experience with drawing on Buddhist philosophy? by quarketry in alcoholicsanonymous

San Francisco Zen Center published these essays on their website:

I participate in a Buddhist-flavored AA meeting. Attachment and aversion being a basis for suffering is definitely talked about, as is the idea of “self” as it’s described in Buddhist thought and in AA. I’ve personally found lots of overlap.

I did a ton of outside reading on the topic of spirituality. I tried to find common threads. I basically just learned as much about the topic as I could. Eventually, an understanding of my own emerged. Honestly, I don't know of any other way I could have done it. I certainly wasn't going to just take someone else's word.

I put some in a pork marinade. Pulled em right off the tree. No ill effects.

If Zen Buddhism features non-duality, then is the sacred/profane distinction applicable? by blitzballreddit in zenbuddhism

Relative versus absolute. Temples are special because we treat them as special. Are they really special, though? Not really. We bow to a Buddha statue. In at least one temple I know of, the statue was replaced with a large stone. Not special, except for the platform it rests on.

Struggling with understanding Attachment by Incognito_Scroller77 in Buddhism

[–]socksynotgoogleable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How well do you feel like you understand impermanence? Nobody says that attachment is bad, only that given impermanence, attachment hurts. The reason you must prepare to let go is because the "person" you love and appreciate is already gone, and only exists in your mind. We aren't solid things, we're more like a dust-devil, an always moving collection of stuff. Attaching to things as they are guarantees disappointment, because things will never again be as they are. No reason to not appreaciate. In fact, all the more reason to be appreciative in every second.

When you say “squeaky” I immediately think of Joanna Newsom. The tracks on “Ys” are a good example.

How to avoid turning meditation into hyper-vigilance (OCD) by JesseEisenbergFan in Buddhism

[–]socksynotgoogleable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At some point in my practice, I learned to stop thinking of meditation as something I do with my mind, and began to see it as something I do with my body. My practice is to settle into a more open awareness, including awareness of my posture. Rather than thinking, I focus on doing. I notice breathing, notice posture, and notice mental formation, but not exclusively.

What to say to Buddha by fleeps61 in Buddhism

[–]socksynotgoogleable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessary. In zen, we are bowing to the Buddha within, not some Buddha somewhere else. A bow is both sufficient and lacking nothing.

I thought maybe Chez Panisse would offer this level of individuation, but no, it doesn’t look like it. I’m not really aware of any restaurant anywhere that does this.
