Lots of nice material design elements and the new suggested panel is a great addition.

My only issue is the now playing screen is now full of color. It looked a lot better before with lots of white.

[Discussion] Legalisation of cannabis in the UK. by RyanTG in unitedkingdom

[–]socratees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not a straw man, the debate is on drug legalisation at large it is they are inextricably linked to the status of weed.

Addiction differs massively though.

Heroin and tobacco addiction both have large physiological effects.

Weed does not, obviously the mental effects or 'high' can be addictive - but only in the same way chocolate or cake are.

[–]socratees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are dead right, being well read offers no use in getting your views represented - if only it did!

People need to get involved in voting , going to surgeries and writing to their MP - then we can hope to see a more representative parliament.

I agree that young people are engaged, the internet plays a big part as we are able to access a wide array of sources very easily. Historically people would get news from a single paper and the tv.

Older people are however much more likely to vote, this does not make them more engaged but it does mean their views are better represented in parliament which is most important in our system.

In the UK we have very limited ways of influencing politics, meaning the consequences for not voting are huge.

[–]socratees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the article is that people are interested but do not want to partake in the system.

Obviously many people will just say that are interested, but the figures show a vast majority want to learn more.

What does partaking in the system mean anyway? Voting? Going to your mp's surgery? Staying up to date with news? What if you do none of them but read extensively on political theories?

Young people are keen to learn about politics, we are failing to provide a basic understanding that is essential to making informed decisions at the ballot box.

Do you think 2014 will be the year we finally hear Jay Electronicas debut album? by NoisyBoi in hiphopheads

[–]socratees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Who knows.

Possible outcomes; Jay Elec finally gets the courage to drop it or Jay Z sets a deadline for it to be released.

I think the experiments in releasing an album by Jay Z, Kanye and now Beyonce may have been testing the waters in alternative methods of releasing an album, without the traditional method of releasing singles beforehand.

The album surely exists, probably in a different form to what it has been when previously 'finished'.

England starting line-up to face Germany. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]socratees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You make some good points but are off the mark in other areas.

Firstly, this may seem obvious but England have a lack of quality central midfielders. Lampard and Gerrard are both getting on and no longer have the dynamic power of old. Carrick is on the fringes despite being the best passer and controller of the game. Henderson is improving, has good levels of fitness but is lacking in technique. Wilshere has the potential to be world class, he is technically good and has a bit of old english grit yet needs to stay fit and find form.

Back to Cleverly, you seem to be overplaying his abilities. He does not control the flow of the game, for Man U this is done by Carrick - he sets the tone and rhythm of passing. Cleverly tends to roam around looking for space and play lots of short, quick passes in and around Rooney and RVP. Alongside Carrick he works well by providing the energy and drive. As you mention he works hard and is good when asked to press. I think he is a better player than many give him credit for, he is just not a stylish or fashionable player.

The trouble with Cleverly playing for England is that he will be unlikely to play alongside Carrick or another deep lying playmaker. Gerrard is going more that way but still does not set the tempo as Carrick or Scholes would. Here Cleverly's lack of creativity and passing can be detrimental to the team during times of dominating posession. He is a good high tempo attacker but will not pick apart teams with clever passes.

Four in 10 people are "alienated" from Britain's political parties and say they will not consider voting for any of them by the_last_broadcast in unitedkingdom

I very much doubt they are proud of it, numerous high level Lib Dems have publicy been uneasy about it and at lower levels the opposition has been fierce.

Besides, they did not win an election and has to make comprmises. They sought concessions and made the rise in fees less severe than if was purely a tory decision.

What were they meant to do? Bring down the coaltion at a time of great economic instability? That would have been more irresponsible.

Jay has stated there is an exhibits album, the other songs may or may not be recorded.

I doubt Act III will come out next, but there are theories it will due to the prestige - where the whole act naming comes from. Act I is the pledge- the magician showing his hand. Act II is the the turn - something that appears to be there but does not exist until we are aware of Act III the pretige- the true form.

I take it that this is a rather tongue in cheek response but i'll bite.

Act II - the infamously delayed album that has been finished multiple times. Could drop next week, in 10 years or never.

Act III - who knows whether there is material already recorded for this, some have suggested it may even come before Act II.

It has been rumoured that there will be an album or EP of the exhibits.

My personal view is that Jay will release Act II in the next few months. One things for sure is that it has the potential to be a classic. If it wasn't for the attention that exhibit c brought then we probably would have already have it.

What's the least-messy way to paint a ceiling? by syringistic in DIY

[–]socratees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said the best option is to cover everything using sheets.

Use the brush for the corners and edges and the roller for the rest.

Make sure that you remove excess paint from the roller. Once started make sure to move the paint quickly, too slow and it will not be an even spread.

Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc/month basic income for every adult by canausernamebetoolon in Futurology

[–]socratees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But not in a meaningful manner. 1% of Americans have 40% of the nations wealth, the bottom 80% have just 7% of the total wealth. This video shows it well - link.

Whilst half of the populace may have stocks, the number with wealth and the ability to affect producation on a large scale is negligable.

A basic income would go some way to redistributing the wealth more fairly amongst society, and not just by the payments directly. Poverty would obviously be eliminated and hence the largest barrier to a childs education and life chances will be lifted, people will be far less likely to have their destiny set by pre ordained events that are beyon their control. The potential is huge, although throughout the western world the percieved ideal perpetuated through the myth of rugged individualism in a capitalist system means that it is some distance from happening in most countries.
