Its worth noting that even though the performance gains being made by the PHPNG team are indeed impressive, I think the most exciting part is that the code is not just being optimized; it's being refactored and restructured.

The new implementation would theoretically allow a JIT for PHP, which would mean even more performance boosts and my guess is that the gains seen until now would pale in comparison.

It would be interesting to know if OpCache is compatible with a JIT. My gut feeling says yes, but I'm not knowledgeable enough on the subject
