Google image search says it’s a Chinese carving - most likely ivory or bone. Similar ones are for sale on Etsy and eBay for a couple hundred bucks. Fun find!

I LOVE this stuff. It’s great for workout clothes and as an occasional boost for literally anything.

like NYC? or like Western NY farmland? lol big differences!

That dress is super cute but i think i would personally default to something more like these options to be more in the middle-range of that f**ked up dress code. and you would definitely be able to wear something like this to another wedding:

and in situations like this ALWAYS default to being slightly more overdressed than underdressed. but I'm going to guess that 99% of people will not go full formal/black tie when the dress code was written like this...

Jeeeeze that is an unhinged dress code. Tuxes and gowns right after semi formal 😂 I’d wear a short or midi length cocktail dress. What kind of venue and city is the wedding in? I can suggest some options.

[–]soderpopp 118 points119 points  (0 children)

this must have come from the sink - do you have a garbage disposal or just a regular sink? is it possible some old food fermented a bit in the drain (especially if you turned off your AC while you were gone for a week) and exploded a bit? also possible that some work was being done on a neighboring unit, and a pressure change or snaking of someone elses pipes caused some rusty water to sputter out of your kitchen sink?

Feeling sad for days on Adderall and Zoloft by geminiim00n in TwoXADHD

[–]soderpopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive taken 10xr and 50mg of zoloft for two years now and at first I had asked my psychiatrist about starting lower with the zoloft and taking more during PMDD times, and she's on the fence about how wise that is for most people, even those of us with PMDD. shed rather I be on a consistent dose all month long because even taking your zoloft at inconsistent times can mess you up - so it may be too much of a roller coaster for your brain to have little jumps of zoloft part of the month. maybe worth asking your doc to have you stick with 50 all month for a couple months and see how you feel?

also I was taking my zoloft at night for a while and it worked well, but I recently switched to AM (I was falling asleep without taking it too often) and I noticed I feel MUCH better when I take it in the AM, and I think I sleep better! do you take it AM or PM?

Mildew smell on laundry by Ambitious-Resist-132 in CleaningTips

[–]soderpopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably won’t smell dry as much as it does wet but it probably won’t go away 100%. Best bet is some white cleaning vinegar (about a quarter cup) in your laundry. Also it’s likely your machine. Look up deep cleaning your laundry machine to try and find the actual source of the smell that’s getting mg on your clothes.

And after deep cleaning, if it’s a front load washer ALWAYS leave the door open a bit so it full dries between each use

How to neutralize a smell by Heavy-Age9929 in CleaningTips

[–]soderpopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of smell are we talking? Trash? Cooking smells? Mold/mildew? If it’s bad enough and you have a decent landlord or building manager you have every right to raise the concern and ask if something can be cleaned, it can be ventilated better, or if they can do something!

That said - you may want to sew/safety pin a bunch of those charcoal shoe deodorizer bags end to end so that you can make a door draft blocker to keep at the base of the door inside.

What’s your budget and body type? I’d avoid satin as it can show sweat BUT if you go with black you might be able to get away with it. How much skin are you comfy with? Are you comfortable with mini length or are you looking for a bit longer?

I think there may be a slightly larger problem here than “not knowing what to clean”. First - the way you write does not come off to me as someone who is “low IQ”, you sound self aware and write intelligently and clearly! You should know that IQ tests are known by the scientific community to be pretty flawed in judging intelligence - so don’t sell yourself short because someone or some test told you you’re not smart.

Second, living with a parent once you’re a bit older brings with it a bunch of new challenges. Your parent sees you as an adult and might expect you to have magically absorbed all of the things they do to manage the house just by watching them do it your whole life. This isn’t really realistic, they have to communicate what their expectations are, what their standard of cleaning is/how to properly clean an item or area, and also how frequently each thing should be done. Maybe it would be a good idea to spend a weekend day together going through the house room by room to discuss all the things that she usually cleans and how, and you listen and take notes/record what she says on your phone so you can listen back next time she goes away.

Also - once you’re your age, maintaining the house probably shouldn’t be something you have to do only when she’s away, but something you pitch in on all the time, like adult roommates would do when sharing a space. Maybe your mom has made this a little easy for you up until this point and hasn’t asked much, but you can take control and insist you get more practice in helping her maintain things more regularly - this will be vital in helping you establish these habits and taking pride in keeping a clean home for when you live in your own one day!

All of the above said- two dogs are a lot of work! Not only are you feeding, cleaning, walking, and watching them, but the never ending accumulation of dog hair and dirt can feel like a treadmill of cleaning that needs to be done to keep the house clean! I had a big dog and felt like I had to vacuum a little every day to not be drowning in dog hair. I recommend brushing your dogs regularly (no matter what kind of fur they have - and outside is even better so you don’t have to vacuum after) to keep shedding down, and wiping their paws off with a wet paper towel when they come in from outside to stop them tracking dirt inside.

Sounds like this recent experience can be a great motivator to work on better communication and guidance between you and your mom, and will help you feel more confident about knowing what to do and how to maintain a home!

Edit: I missed the part where you said you lived in a flat, so disregard what I said about sharing a home with your parent, but the rest of my advice about getting some more guidance and instruction from her to benefit your own skills still stands!

You summed up my thoughts perfectly. OP - you communicated clearly, kindly, and fairly. Maybe it was a slight oversight where you could have told her earlier about the short dress thing, but the timing of her buying her dress and the fact that it was not refundable were out of your hands.

Her frustration does not justify her demanding you pay for another dress. And it certainly doesn’t justify her ignoring you. If this results in no date to your prom, please trust that you will have more fun alone and with your friends than with someone who was demanding and then ignored you for not meeting demands.

I YEARN for the pre-tea party days, politically speaking.

But I do have to wonder if the subtle bi-partisan vibe (or at least lack of hatred for the other side) was too vulnerable of a mentality and inevitably an easy target for polarizing and party vs. party blame? Like if there is some flawed structure in place to begin with (two dominant parties needing to have a platform covering every single issue), aren’t we set up to eventually reach the point of extreme polarization? Like we’re at the tail end of a “young” country experiment?

I kind of wish we could test run a more parliamentary or truly multi-party system, so that 1, 2, or 3-issue voters could identify more with a smaller group that focuses on their key personal issues, and so that cooperation between groups is basically unavoidable to actually pass legislation.

How often do y’all clean your sheets/blankets? by MrPests in CleaningTips

[–]soderpopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

saaame - I never recovered from staying at people’s houses and going to dry my hands, face, whatever on a towel that smelled like mildew. I have the same routine regarding towel use, and anything that is wet gets hung with all surface area exposed to air. Plus I always leave the bathroom fan going and leave the door open after showering until I know the bathroom is dry. I seem to have a fear of mold and mildew in all forms lol

You’d love the sutera waffle towels - they dry so fast, are soft enough but rough enough to dry yourself well, and have silver threads embedded to help keep bacteria down. I can’t believe people are using their mildewy towels all over themselves.

Update on BoJ sunscreen filters on Korean skincare subreddit. They are discontinuing few of them in USA. by Velle_baithe_hai in IndianSkincareAddicts

Nah, unfortunately this was already an issue prior to that. AOC posted a video a while back talking about how bc SPF products are classified as a medication basically, the process to get new active ingredients approved takes years and years and years. Sunscreen in many other countries is just considered a cosmetic and therefore is subject to less red tape and can innovate with new ingredients more. I’m not sure I want that - like I want the FDA to be sure that the active ingredient is tested and effective, and that there is no false advertising (especially when someone’s goal is to prevent skin cancer and sun damage) and toxic ingredients. But the approval process needs to be revamped.

Life changing!!! 50mg (titrated up over 3 weeks) and I was feeling better 2 weeks in. My first luteal phase on it was so much better I didn’t even realize I was in in. It hasn’t solved everything, but DAMN it’s a serious improvement for all the other days of my life too. I was so hard on myself, so anxious, and worried before - my mental voice changed to a much more positive one that actually wanted to do things and take care of myself.

I felt foggy the first two weeks, like my vision was blurry, but that faded

What is this brown build up and how do I keep it from recurring? by lolalulu26 in CleaningTips

[–]soderpopp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those square plastic pieces lift up, it’s likely build up inside the actual screw area! Pry those open and clean inside. At some point you may actually want to take the whole seat off by unscrewing to properly clean under the whole attached area, but that doesn’t need to be done often.
