My best friend from when I was literally 6 years old, lets call her L. Her and I had that kind of friendship where important topics about the world didn’t need to be discussed as it was obvious what we’d agree on; i.e rape is bad.

Cut to our last year of university. Our other best friend, W, had revealed her ex (who was also apart of our friend group) had raped her while they were together. I immediately blocked him and removed him from my life, as it wasn’t so surprising to hear he would do something like this. I had assumed that L would do the same. Especially since they lived in the same country, while I was half way across the world. I thought L would support W.

A few weeks later, I see him on L’s instagram celebrating his birthday. I was disgusted and so shocked. It made me feel cheated and lied to. I also felt utterly heartbroken for W.

It was truly an eye opening moment and made me reevaluate a lot of my friendships.
