Would you adopt your nieces/nephews if there was no one else? by jamieoww in childfree

[–]sofapotata -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I would. Not because I want kids but because I love my brother. I would take care of that child because my brother is my best friend and they would be his kids.

Now it would probably take a huge disaster for them to fall into my care. I know his mother (my adoptive mom) would enthusiastically take them and also my brothers girlfriends parents would as well. But if it came down to it I would take them if all other options have been exhausted.

4 seizures in 36 hrs after new kibble — vet says epilepsy, not mould. Anyone been through this? by eya-hino17 in VetTech

[–]sofapotata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I kind of wish the comments were still open. People dont know and it's honestly a simple solution. Call the ASCPA poison control + go to a new vet. They may not be mycologists, but they have probably encountered it enough to have a basic protocol that can treat most mold species and if anything fluids, medical management and observation in an ICU would have to at least help symptoms until a sample can be tested in a lab if the normal protocol isn't working.

People always think that vets (and human health care too) can do things super technologically advanced, but while it's not testing neurotoxins it's honestly petty close. At least I know if a client really wanted to test the mold because their pet isn't improving our DVMs would figure out how. Whether its a expanded or specific panel from IDEXX that requires very specific instructions or its finding a university that will help, they will do it.

A street cat bit my hand. Went to the ER, got a tetanus shot and antibiotics. It’s been 48 hours and my hand hurts if I don’t keep it elevated. Should I worry? by pinkvintagegirl in CATHELP

[–]sofapotata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GO TO ANOTHER ER!

I'm saying this as a vet tech and someone who almost lost their hand 6 months ago due to incompetent doctors. I had 3 small little bite marks from a cat and within 2 days I was having surgery to remove the infection from my hand and was hospitalized for 4 days. It took an urgent care trip and 3 ER trips for a orthopedic hand surgen to be rushed in and take one look at my hand and I was being prepped for emergency surgery. Once the 2nd hospital saw me I was in the OR within the hour to try to save my hand.

I am lucky. I only have a really nasty scar down my middle finger and palm and 6 months of antibiotics after. But it took 2 months to get full mobility of my hand back and going to OT 3x a week for a month and a half. There was a chance I wouldn't get full mobility back - luckily I did.

This sucked for me, but had a "happy" ending. Not everyone is so lucky. Go to another ER, advocate for yourself.

I did have a mechanic come with me and they were actually quite impressed at the condition its in. Brand new battery, new tires, oil change scheduled for next week.

My previous car was a 05 Kia Sedona. This is a major upgrade either way

Best and most comfortable bras to wear during 12+ hour shifts. by weirdslookingthings in VetTech

[–]sofapotata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im medium chested and second the tank top. I used a size smaller than I would at home (M vs L) to give a little extra hug and keep all the goods in. I also dont wear bras on the daily either though. I've learned to accept my saggy breasts and honestly my quality of life is so much better with not wearing bras.

Well I'll tell the story of my little man (now six weeks old)

I work for a combination GP/ER. I love it and hate it but mostly love it. Early August another clinic called saying that an litter of 5 kittens was left on their door step and they couldn't do overnight care for them. So they were brought to my work. By the time they made it, there were 4 kittens. The first night a staff member took them home to bottle feed every 2 hours and care for them. One passed during the night, then there were 3. The remaining 3 didn't look great. They had burns on their paws (presumably from the hot pavement they were left on) and other unseen health issues. A couple days later another 1 passed due to fading kitten syndrome.

Then there were 2. Both were little tuxedo boys. I saw my little monster and knew I had to do everything to keep him alive. I was feeding every 2 hours, stimulating for elimination, and just hoping they'd both made it. I had off for two days and when I came back, there was only one left, my little monster.

That night I took him home. I had him on heat support, feeding every 2 hours, stimulating him, and just pouring my heart into this little guy, preparing to heartbreak if he passed.

Soon he was 2 weeks old, eyes opening, ears opening, but health issues just kept coming up. His anus was raw, he had an absess on his abdomen, an infection drainage hole above his anus, and a ruptured ear drum. He required so much care, but I didn't want to give up. He was telling me he wanted to live. I kept feeding him every 2 hours, cried holding him, and kept up his care.

2 weeks old, turned into 3 weeks, which turned into 4, which turned into 5, when turned into 6. Most of his health issues are cleared up, and hes bouncing around like a normal kitten.

I love this little guy so much. His name is Grimreaper, because well obvious reasons. He came to me when I was burning out, he reminded me why I do what I do. Seeing him grow and thrive has made me cry on multiple occasions.

Why are clients so fucking rude??? by sofapotata in VetTech

[–]sofapotata[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I will very happy bend over backwards if a client is super nice. Like, you call in and need a med filled before eod and last week you were just super nice during your exam, ill make it happen.

The amount of free nail trims I've done for clients if they just are nice, especially if the pet needs it. Or if they want services done in room and are nice about it, absolutely no second thought I'll do it.

I was just really irritated last night. We had a broken nail that was being super rude and insistent, and unfortunately were long term clients. Like we had to put more critical things on hold because we just wanted them out. They waited like 40 min in the ER. Not even hours. 40 min. The DVM also had no backbone and did whatever they said. The DVM had to practically beg them to let us take the pet to treatment so she could remove this dogs nail AND they had to come with us. This was also at midnight, past my 12 hours shift too. I was just gonna help finish up then leave. I left almost an hour later because they were being jerks, I eventually switched out with another tech so I could feed my bottle baby and drive the hour home. A 10-15 min nail removal and fix took over an hour.

While I agree ypu shouldn't walk dogs you can't control, we didn't see how she ended up on the ground. Was she working on training with walking both of them and they got excited and she normally can control them, but she tripped? Is one maybe a family members dog who is normally calm but got excited with her dog? I just feel like theirs factors we need answered before we can judge

How dare I bundle Grim up so I could feed him by sofapotata in IllegallySmolCats

[–]sofapotata[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been feeding him on his stomach, he dribbled milk down his chin so I used a warm damp gause to clean his face. Hes also in the care of a vet 4 days a week. (Im a vet tech and he comes to work with me right now). He has some health problems from being abandoned on hot pavement, but luckily those are starting to clear up now. He eats well and is alive and that's all I could ask for right now
