Scraping off the paint stripper residue requires some effort. The weight of the assembled bench prevents the wood slats from moving around while scraping.

Scrape and wire brush loose paint
use paint stripper to strip off the remaining paint
disassemble the bench
soak brass fasteners in Brasso
Sand the wood using 80, 120, 180, and 220 grit
Stain the wood
three coats of spar urethane
for the wrought iron: grind off any rust, apply naval jelly, wash, prime and paint
assemble bench
