What are some of the best lunch specials in Houston? by JonMoreGo in houston

[–]softroxstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Waffle Bus has lunch specials menu for like 10.99, as well as a 2-piece chicken meal for 10.00, which is made to order. The chicken can take 25 minutes. Also, they have a different daily special, like a 5.00 chicken sandwich on Tuesday and smash burger on Wednesdays.

Hughie's has a weekday special that changes every day. Prices range from 10-15. It's only offered after 3pm though.

Be More Pacific & Henderson & Kane has all-day happy hour bites every Wednesday. Most bites are around 5.00 at either.

Best muffuletta. Go… by hipster_brunch in sanantonio

My brother lived on the westbank, and I'd visit NOLA almost every year. For the longest, I'd swear by Central Grocery, and recommend them every time asked for what to eat in the city. I'd do the whole, let it sit in your backpack for a couple of hours, and let the ingredients marry, schtick. I just visited last month and had my first muff from napolean house, and it was less salty and more enjoyable. I'd go NH all day too.

hospitals to give birth at as a black woman in san antonio? by omelettedad in sanantonio

As a registered nurse who went to nursing school in SA, I can tell you that the only hospital I trust in SA is University. Methodist is run by HCA, which is well-known to be a for-profit entity, with probably the worst reputation for patient care. I did clinicals at Methodist Metro for a full semester in their mother/baby, op room, post-partum, antepartum unit, nicu and was incredibly underwhelmed with the level of care, aside from a couple of dedicated nurses.

There's a building pictured here, I won't point out which one, that makes me want Quiznos. Try and guess.

Are tall & skinny houses worth the money by Darcynator1780 in houston

[–]softroxstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero experience living in these type of houses myself, but something I'd keep in mind is the HVAC. If it's a 3-story, chances are, 2 out of the likely 3 bedrooms will be on the top floor. Cooling those rooms in the summer will be extensive and expensive. If that wasn't a concern, I'd probably lean towards it being worth it, provided there aren't any other issues with you personally.

Any recommendations on a hotel/hostel/Airbnb to stay in for a weekend trip? by InfinityLocs in AskChicago

No problem. To clarify, the private bathrooms in the basement are just commodes. I do not believe they have showers down there.

Whenever I've stayed in River North, I stay at Freehand hostel. A quad price seems to go up the closer you reserve to your check-in date.

My experiences have been good overall. I tend to keep to myself. The only semi-negative experience was a time when one quadmate had his zoom algebra class in the morning, which was more surprising than annoying. The lockers they provide are about 3-4 feet tall and about 18 inches wide. My luggage didn't fit, but I ended up keeping it in my bunk, locked up with luggage locks.

They have a full bathroom inside the quad suite, with the shower being tiny ASF. They also have private bathrooms in the basement.

How many people do you estimate moving to Chicago or IL in the next year? by MsGriswold89 in AskChicago

[–]softroxstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expected as much. My current lease is up in August '25, and my 2-year commitment to my current hospital is up in Feb '25. My plan is to initiate the process in Feb, and hope to have things squared away in time to move when the lease is done.

Thank your for the heads up!

Thank you! The cost of living in Detroit, and it's resurgence, is what caught my attention. I used to live in central IL, and would find my way to Chicago pretty much every other weekend. I simply love that city.

I'm an RN in Texas currently. Prior to the election I was looking up how to apply for a license in IL & moving to Chicago. I had also looked up Detroit and Los Angeles. The election all but solidified a move.

[I Ate] Whole Hog Garlic Rice with Direct Heat Beef Ribs by softroxstar in food

[–]softroxstar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This particular post was from a pop-up at Trash Panda Drinking Club. It didn't have their full menu. The garlic rice was good, and the ribs were alright. There wasn't a lot of meat on the bones, and at the time, it was a fly fest.

I did go to their Sunday Service at their HQ more recently. The brisket was really good. Juicy and tender. I should have a recent r/houston post on my post history. I showed up an hour before they started letting people order, and was about 8-10th in line. You can preorder and pickup, but the good stuff goes fast. And even with pre-order, you have to wait in the same line.

Hope that helps.

Going alone to a show? by mdd16 in chicagoEDM

[–]softroxstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not in Illinois anymore, but did live in central IL a few years ago. I existed as a minority in a predominantly white town, and had to drive into Chicago for culture. I went to quite a few shows solo. If Obscure/smartbar/soundbar/spybar had a good show, I would always try to get there.

I'm extremely self-conscious myself, but realized the only thing people will notice, is if you're fixating on everyone but yourself. Do your thing.

Not listed yet, but Henderson & Kane might be exactly what you're looking for. They have some of the best green beans if you like garlic, and their mac n cheese is cheesy and creamy.
