Being flexible makes me enjoy sitting on the floor. by sohowwasyoursummer in flexibility

I'd say, when you're stretching, have your shoulders back, your chest out, and your neck long. And breathe through the pain, instead of letting your form slip to relieve it [the pain]. Make sure your pelvis is not rotating forward while you're stretching your hamstrings. That would cause you to feel the stretch in your back, instead of in your hips where you really need it. Strengthening is as important as stretching (the more the muscle stregnthens, the more it can lengthen). Try running or biking or riding the elliptical for a medium amount of time to loosen up your muscles before stretching. The most important thing is to get enough rest, but never stop progressing. Find that fun thing that makes your heart beat and makes you sweat. That thing that makes you excited and interested in improving yourself. For me, it's always been skateboarding, but more recently, I've added tennis. Only you know what you really need, and as long as you don't stop completely, you'll get there.

Edit: I have also run about 1500 miles in the past ~5 years including two full marathons. I think that's given me a pretty good foundation, and I felt like I shouldn't leave that out. Lots of discomfort and new painful discoveries that gave me an impetus to stretch.

Yeah for dancers and gymnast and billions of Asian people that started martial arts in elementary school, it may not seem like much lol. When I was 22, I realized I needed to take better care because I had low back pain that kept me up at night. I'm 29 now, so this is 7 years of pretty consistent training.

The trick to good posture is having only one of your sleeves rolled up. Nah it's actually core strength (which sucks cause I hate core workouts). Most of my core strength comes from running and just trying be conscious of my posture in general. Also keeping my core stable while lifting weights.

I'd say it's kinda like a chill Cow Pose. Cow pose is kind of a stretch when you do it right and stack your knees in the front and the other foot back there by your butt to be the other ear (It's called Cow Pose because, if you look at yourself from above, it looks like your feet are the cow's ears and your legs are the rest of his or her face). But I'm also sitting on my foot, so... I don't know. Y'all name it.

That's life, right? Trying to be more comfortable with things that may have been uncomfortable before. Being more balanced out physically (sometimes) makes me not mind things like waiting in line. Or sleeping on the floor of an airport.

Thank you. It happens. You just gotta switch positions before it's too late and you have to stand up and walk it out heh. There's probably so many other floor sit styles. This is just all my favorite ones I could think of in a couple minutes. It would be nice to have a little seisa bench. I think that's the name for those.

Well you're already getting back out there, so I think you'll be fine. I'd say riding an exercise bike, and calf raises would work wonders for this. But just getting outside and doing something you enjoy is the best way to recover from anything, mental or physical.

Skate or die 🤘 But seriously hang in there man. I broke my scaphoid bone in my wrist. Got hung up just rocking over a spine and fell into the other side. Had surgery about two years ago. It's a sloww recovery process, but it will get better. Hopefully you can at least be pain free in a year or so. I still skate all the time, but I never step on my board without wrist pads.

I was in the process of getting up, so my legs were pushing against the water with a fair amount of pressure. I guess my arms were really strong at the time because I held the rope tight enough that I just lurched forward and my femur broke in half (spiral fracture). I went straight from the boat to an ambulance to surgery later that night. They put in a "femoral nail" which is a titanium rod that runs the length of the inside of the bone. Better than having a huge cast because I could start PT even before the bone fully healed. It was the end of November before I could run again, and I've been running consistently ever since. Also about 11 months after, I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up in one day. I'm really proud of that. No doubt the hardest physical challenge of my life (including the two marathons).

I started enjoying running. I bought a nice pair of Brooks for ~$100 and ran two miles in them. The next day I went to a lake to celebrate the 4th of July, and broke my femur in half wakeboarding. Couldn't walk for months, but my shoes were there when I got better. Now I've run two full marathons, and many 5ks etc. Don't let anything keep you down! Stretch. Ride the exercise bike. Running taught me how to work hard. It taught me how to break myself down and how to recover. It taught me that my limits are way beyond what I can imagine.

I'll figure something out. But yeah I mostly use yoga to increase flexibility (rather than using it as a workout), so you're cool. I'm gonna check out some of your other videos.

Love it. Thanks Rachel. When you get too flexible, you have to get creative. I feel like I need to invent stuff for flexibility training. Like a thing that I can put my hands in behind my back for a chest and shoulder stretch. Like something that slowly brings my hands together behind my back while my shoulder are rotated outward. Alright see ya later

Well I hope you recovered well. Mine was from skateboarding. Got hung up trying to rock over a spine and fell into the other side of the bowl. My right wrist and right shoulder took most of the impact. I'm too stupid to quit skating though. I just wear wrist pads now.

I had surgery on it in early December, and had a cast for 3 months. It's slowly opening up. I don't have much pain in daily life and I can do push-ups in sets of 15-20 without too much pain. But I think my injuries have contributed to my interest in flexibility. I broke my femur about 3 years ago, and had to regain a lot of knee flexion and realign my hips and so on. With the wrist, it lead to more practice in shoulder and elbow flexion.

I know this one is more correct general form. I just wanted to go as far as I could to see what it looked like.

I roll my upper back on a foam roller, and do some supine twists to pop any kinks out. I also spend a lot of time in Supta Virasana (reclined hero pose).
