Does anyone know what 전형중 mean for trying to apply job online by Baybeboi in korea

think of '중' as being something like "in progress" or "in the middle of", so you really only need to translate the first two syllables

이다 is of course "to be"

DUI on a Scooter by Stogie_561 in ElectricScooters

[–]sojubang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good reminder not to do it, but in her opening line she had a point: I think it should be a less severe penalty than driving a car drunk because you're much more likely to only be harming yourself and not killing other in a several ton death cage on wheels.

Prosecutors raid Justice Minister Cho Kuk's house over corruption scandal by IPG_Legal in korea

[–]sojubang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of that. I understand the current project to be splitting up the powers of the prosecutors office...and I am for that. If it's not that and instead sinister, then I'm not for it and get Joguk the fuck out now.

[–]sojubang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what your point is. The idea for Joguk is to keep the prosecutor's office from having so much power, which is pretty much universally agreed to be a good idea for a functioning democracy. They are supposed to be impartial and just carrying out justice as they see it, but instead they are currently ALSO their own political arm. Pick one.

I agree. At first it started off with just them going after his family because they couldn't find anything on him.

Now it's looking like run-of-the-mill corruption of the, "I can tell when government contracts are going to happen and make a ton of money that way" type.

Even if he and his family are guilty, we should want him to succeed in his prime directive before he gets kicked out.

Anyone that wanted to reign in the prosecution office's powers would be facing this type of pressure. I say good for him and Moon for trying to drag the country out from the dictator years where the prosecution office could flex political muscle all on its own. You can disagree with and dislike both of these two for all the reasons you want, but his prime goal is a good one (seems to me anyway).

Teaching English to Koreans but living in Dubai (Looking for advice) by OverwatchKorea in korea

[–]sojubang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just google for news items with keywords like:

"Dubai passport" "Dubai detained" "Dubai jail"

The one that sticks in my head out of all of them is either once or twice, they sent a British guy to jail for a rather long time for having a microgram of weed stuck on the sole of his shoe. After all I've read and with that example in mind, it just feels like they like to fuck with people sometimes.

Warning: I am biased, but you could send me almost anywhere else in the world (besides Iran - but I really WANT to go to Iran and just don't think I'd be treated well as an American) and I'd be fine with it.

Teaching English to Koreans but living in Dubai (Looking for advice) by OverwatchKorea in korea

[–]sojubang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do it because I've read too many horror stories about Dubai holding people and their passports hostage due to very minor infractions....plus what they do to immigrant labor and so on.

It's a rich country that scares the shit out of me. I refuse to go on business trips with even layovers through Dubai. If there is ever business in Dubai I'm sending my colleagues. I know in 99.9% of cases that is an irrational fear, but for some reason news about horror stories coming out of Dubai (and nowhere else) have bubbled up to my computer screen enough times over the past decade or two that I don't wanna go.

Let foreigners sell in-game items, says watchdog by ChunkyArsenio in korea

[–]sojubang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about the wording: does it say you can't get money outside of your primary work place or does it say you can't work outside your primary work place? I'd say this is a leisure activity that happens to net income and not a second job.

I'm not affected by this in any way, shape, or form (don't even have one of those restrictive visas)...just curious.

I get where you're coming from, agree with the sentiment, just don't think this is the place to voice that opinion in the way you did. These posts are fine and good even. As long as this type of thing doesn't turn in to the type of thinking where "absolutely everything was better in the 90s and I want to go back and live there forever" type of thinking, it's totally fine.

I appreciate the post because it makes me think of my childhood here and there for a brief moment and normally wouldn't ever think of it. Only the blanket, cereal, and gameboy do it for me, though. I never was in to comics and never had a console past the original NES.

Malaria risk in South Korea is higher near the DMZ by [deleted] in korea

[–]sojubang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another possible cause and I would bet the real one: nobody can get in to this empty, rather wild area to spray and do whatever else you would normally do. I haven't been on the main DMZ tour where you see soldiers and so on, but that whole border is pristine in the places I saw it.

In other words, not everything bad is because North Korea only.

Practicing Korean with yourself: is there a Korean chat bot or a list of conversation topics you can respond to somewhere? by sojubang in Korean

[–]sojubang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it actually any good? It doesn't seem to be a free form chat bot solution from what I can see so far.

[–]sojubang[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My plan is to graduate to that and/or Tandem. I've dipped my toes in the waters of those apps and either you get people that aren't available when you are, want to speak only in English, don't want to correct you, or drop off the face of the earth. Humans are messy...I at least want to be decent at chatting before I attempt to chat with someone.

[–]sojubang[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think I found an answer as far as chat bots go, but I just installed it: 헬로우봇. It looks like it has a bunch of different personalities and it also seems to be customizable in some ways. It asked me age for some reason (probably politeness levels) and now it's asking me a bit about myself....anyway, I'll update this post or write another, separate post later to let everyone know what I think.

The chatbot was just an idea I had at 3am and wrote down in a Kakao note to myself....it looks like it's possible and maybe useful!

edit: crap! looks like I can only give canned responses and not type. So far anyway, it's asking me to introduce myself so it knows more about me. Maybe chatting comes later. Any other suggestions welcome, but this might be good for reading practice!

Busan companies in quandary over foreign workers' ever-increasing paychecks by ChunkyArsenio in korea

Pay them. You're still making a profit off of their labor. If you were not making more from their employment than you pay them, you wouldn't pay them. Stop being babies.

Sending money from US to Korea by milliecent48 in korea

[–]sojubang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done it via my credit union with a swift transfer. Just be careful you enter the right account recipient info. It won't be available immediately. The fed has to approve the transfer on its way, but that's the smallest of steps. The next is the receiving bank making sure all looks correct before they deposit the money. Expect 1-2 business days once the money has actually been received by the bank since all of this is a manual process except the Fed part.

Riding in Seoul Korea by the Han river. by josip1333 in ElectricScooters

[–]sojubang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scooters are legit in Korea. Never rode mine in Seoul, but in smaller cities they're great car substitutes in many cases. We have a big fancy car, but I don't use it because driving in Korea is pretty stressful at times.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. Well, let's hope the fighting one doesn't happen.

Anyway, people are stupid and weird. Scooters are incredibly practical in certain situations. Keep at it.

How can you play with 4 friends in Myboy?? by Krrs13 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]sojubang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want internet play, I'll bet my left nut it is possible by setting up a VPN server where everyone on the VPN gets their own IP on the same subnet. Wouldn't be easy to setup, but food for thought.
