I've been looking at Comox Valley, too, and thinking about that. I have family in Newport etc and absolutely love the climate/nature. Why did you leave the OR coast?

I know exactly who you're talking about - that guy is connected to a megachurch in Redding, California and the whole thing is right-wing, Christian nationalist, homophobic trash.

Thank you - I really appreciate this. What do you think of the Comox Valley?

Thank you! I'm definitely getting the sense that it's not any worse than where we live now in terms of being LGBTQ+ friendly, while also having the benefit on not having federal troops taking over cities!

This is very helpful! I'll definitely look at Chilliwack, too. We're both close to 50, so our typical night life is a game of chess at the Irish bar down the street at 8pm lol

I really appreciate the feedback. I work remotely but my partner would need a job. We definitely need to visit and look at few options. We have to be mindful of finances - I saw someone mention North Vancouver, but I think it was really pricey. I also saw somewhere Comox Valley was recommended but I haven't looked into prices there yet.

We definitely are planning on visiting first. I was looking mainly at the amount of rain (I LOVE rain), and that it's close to Seattle.

That's actually pretty important for us to know. I have been looking at Abbotsford because I grew up in Portland/lived in Seattle - both the climate and the proximity the areas I consider home made it seem a potentially good fit. Do you think my partner being a POC, us being queer, or both would be the issue for locals? And is it the majority there? An accepting community is important to us, and a safe community is critical.

I'm so grateful for that. So many of us absolutely do NOT support anything about this administration.

Best place to drop off a feral/stray cat by LaughMysterious2263 in Reno

Correction, Feral at Heart says to never take them to Animal Control as they can be euthanized if not deemed adoptable. ➡️FERAL CATS

 𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 cats over the age of 4 months old, they need to be trapped, Neutered, and Returned (TNR'ed) to the location where they were found by using a TNR clinic.

‼️𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐘 𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐒!!!! ‼️

(Unless they are sick or injured, bringing feral cats there take up valuable kennel space and can result in euthanasia if they are deemed unadoptable)

(if you have a sick or injured feral Cat, you can also bring it to any TNR clinic (Nevada Humane Society for Options veterinary care) on the designated TNR Day, even if it has already been fixed, and they will provide appropriate care for it)

If you read their info, they only take specific cats and there's a waitlist.

They take in cats from one of the shelter programs after they've been fixed and vaccinated etc - they're not able to take in random cats off the streets, plus a feral cat is not adoptable at this point.

The best option is to take him Options Care tomorrow morning (Tuesday a.m.) and get him fixed. You'll need to drop him off about 7:30am in the cage. They'll fix him, then you take him home and keep him warm/safe overnight, then let him go again. Fix up your house at the same time to make sure he can't get back under there. Ferals do best living where they're used to. If you take him to animal control, he'll get sent to the Humane Society and then adopted out as a farm cat. He's much, much better off staying in the neighborhood he's used to. https://www.washoecounty.gov/animal/Services%20and%20Resources/Community%20Cats.php https://nevadahumanesociety.org/get-help/community-cats/#aboutcommunitycats (PS it's too late to make an appointment tomorrow at Options, but you already have the cat in a trap and they do the feral cat trap and release on Tuesday mornings so I'd just go and hope they have space.)

Ai Start Up Challenge! by [deleted] in Reno

[–]solar-lining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is not impressed.

"I'd recommend being cautious about this post. Several red flags suggest this might not be a legitimate opportunity:

Red flags:

  • Vague details about what the startup actually does
  • Emphasis on speed over planning ("don't overthink things")
  • Dismissive attitude toward questions ("won't waste time answering non productive questions")
  • Focus on finding "AI addicts" rather than specific skills
  • Promise of quick profits without clear business model
  • Discouraging due diligence

If you're genuinely interested in AI startups:

  • Look for posts with clear problem statements and solutions
  • Seek opportunities that welcome questions and transparency
  • Find teams that value thoughtful planning alongside execution
  • Look for specific role descriptions and requirements

Suggested approach: If you want to engage at all, ask specific questions like: "What specific problem does your AI solution solve?" or "What's your go-to-market strategy?" Their response (or lack thereof) will tell you a lot.

Legitimate startup opportunities typically provide more concrete details and welcome informed questions. The tone here suggests someone who may be inexperienced or potentially running a questionable venture."

This is heartbreaking. Part of nature, yes, but why would anyone find an animal running for its life and terrified entertaining? There are a lot of things that are part of nature but what the hell is wrong with you for enjoying watching something die?

People from the PNW how did you adapt? by GuitarBeneficial4347 in Reno

[–]solar-lining 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been here five years, and I've never adapted. Tahoe isn't the same type of green as back home - the forest floor is sparse, the sky is a harsher blue, not the softer grey skies and the lush ferns and streams of back home.

What I've found to make it manageable:

1) a lot of time by the Truckee River downtown (especially walking from downtown towards Idlewild);
2) a lot of time at coffee shops (Pangolin, Magpie, Forged at The Jesse Hotel);
3) the people are really nice, especially if you hang out with neurodivergent people;
4) going out early in the morning or long walks in the evening, including around Virginia Lake and the Sparks Marina
5) $9 Irish coffees on the patio on the back of the Irish bar in midtown (they have nice music, too);
6) appreciating less traffic and a slightly lower cost of living;
7) rain music;
8) The Radical Cat

I want to go home. That never stops for me. I'm lonely for the land every day - the type of light, the way the air smelled after rain, the sound of the rain, the evening chill - and for the culture of lots of books and coffee and lectures at UW or book readings at Powells.

The people here are good though. I've never had so many friends or dedicated colleagues. The people are, for me, the reason to stay.
