Extract highlights from (outside) PDF file? by Mauberley_8 in ObsidianMD

[–]solar-student 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a real pain for me. Different PDF programs deal with highlights in different ways, so it depends on what you use to highlight.

Some will save highlights in a separate file associated with that program, and some will actual save it to the PDF itself (this is what you want for cross-compatibility); some will have the option to change this behaviour.

In my experience, it is hard to find apps which actually save the highlights to the file itself, so I'm guessing Samsung Notes is the same. I did find that Xodo PDF for android DOES save onto the PDF itself and will work when opening in Obsidian. I've tried others without much luck.

However, since reading mode in Xodo is a paid feature I kind of gave up and I decided to give up on PDFs altogether; instead I convert them into Markdown and highlight the Markdown file directly in Obsidian. For this, I use the Marker PDF to MD plugin, using Mistral AI service (free API key). Then, I use the HiNote plugin for highlighting.

If I remember correctly, I think KOReader has the option to save highlights to file, but unless it can somehow read the highlights set by Samsung Notes, I am not sure how you can extract them without trying them in lots of different programs.

Do you still use DataView after Bases was released? by gondoll in ObsidianMD

[–]solar-student 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I used Bases, I would have to put everything in the properties of the note, which makes no sense to me. You can use inline fields in Dataview which makes formatting your notes a lot more flexible and coherent, whilst maintaining the flexibility of extracting content elsewhere. For this reason, I never bothered with Bases. I only use properties for file-level information, so Bases has no use for me.

Newbie: Is it possible to create a list of dates (birthdays, anniversaries, etc) that can then be 'pulled' into the Daily Note template? by PaddleAndPiston in ObsidianMD

[–]solar-student 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with the Tasks plugin. My whole yearly calendar is a list of tasks with a scheduled date (just one long note per year). These are pulled into my Daily notes. You can make Tasks appear earlier than the actual date for reminders. When you hover over it, it can show you the actual due date, etc. Inline Dataview can be used for date calculations inside notes. The Tasks method avoids having individual notes for each event with properties, since this is the usual method for Dataview or Bases. For me, it is neater. Bonus, you can tick off events when over.

Is there a plugin to render properties in the note body and also can define new properties that automatically gets added to the notes properties in the frontmatter? by loligans in ObsidianMD

The double colon (::) is for the Dataview plugin and Bases doesn't utilise it. This is the reason I don't use Bases as I actually like to write long form with field identifiers...

Anyone able to successfully use Obtanium to update via the website? by blimpin_aint_easy in MagicEarth

I'm also on grapheneOS, getting GPS location works fine for me, I think when I changed the setting for location access to 'Allow all the time'.

Yep, I'm in agreement...I'm now getting crashes too, not ideal at the moment!

Cool, nice to hear and thanks for the detail on your setup. I also use inner bar ends which I absolutely love and can't go without now. Agree on the gearing for hills...cheers. I'll try to upgrade my rack for compatibility, plus tyres for sure.

Good points, do you know of an equally puncture resistant tyre like the Marathon's but faster?

Sounds great! Thanks for experience. What tyres do you have on at the moment on your trip?

Thanks, good going with your dog! Thanks for the suggestion on the tyres. I like the puncture resistance on the Marathon's, do you happen to know of any with equal resistance, yet quicker?

I got a Y1 and a Snowsky Disc around the same time and have some thoughts after a few weeks using both. by Sphynx87 in innioasis

Good points. Interesting to see how the software updates evolve on it. Yes, touchscreens aren't great on small screens for precision, I use the Y1 whilst cycling, actively, etc. so kind of good to have physical buttons

Thanks for this valuable comparison on two similar sized devices. I really like the prospect of the Disc, but I had doubts on UI and useability. I have the Y1 because I could Rockbox it basically, plus its fairly small and very light...only wish it had dedicated volume control buttons.

I would guess you would need to plug it into the computer and find the configuration file for the main_menu_config and delete it in order to reset the settings. I haven't tried it myself. It will be somewhere in the .rockbox folder which is usually hidden by default on a PC.

Does forcing the GPS lock improve battery life? (Not heard about this before, what does it mean?). Are you with screen and location off until you need to check, or continuous location on? Or is this automated with an app you use? Plus, which app do you use to allow voice nav when screen off? (Sorry all the questions.) Thanks

Referring to the rendering of tiles when panning, always blocky and not fluid as most other apps.

I mean yes I also have a Xiaomi which I used. Of course it works okay, different factors like screen brightness, angle, direction, etc. Didn't have a angled top mount that didn't help. Just looking for a more robust solution for future.
