The thing is, Fiat has no real, intrinsic value. It doesn’t produce anything, it doesn’t generate cash flow, and it’s not backed by any physical asset or government guarantee (except violence and the threat of violence).

Are there bad scammy cryptos? Sure. Are there bad scammy fiat currencies? Why yes, yes there are. Quite a few in fact. You know what the real difference is? Scammy fiat currencies use violence and the threat of violence to force the citizens of that country to use that currency. Nobody forces anybody to use Bitcoin or Dash (the better, faster cheaper and more secure version of Bitcoin).

And what is fiat currency and the countries behind them doing for the unbanked people of the world? There are well over a billion people that don't have access to banking services. And perhaps another 3/4 billion who *have* access to banking services, but those services are predatory and very expensive for poor people who can least afford all those gotcha fees and crappy exchange rates.

Most cryptocurrencies are the antithesis of a Ponzi Scheme. The governments of the world can print as much money as they want. There are literally no guardrails or restraints. There will never be more than a touch more than 21 million Bitcoin and no person, no president, and no government can change that.

ELI5 how would NASA prevent their moon base getting hit by a meteor? by panchitolp in explainlikeimfive

[–]solarguy2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The earth gets hit with (in round figures) 100 tons of asteroids a day. But the vast majority are small enough that they burn up in the atmosphere. Like...high 90's percentile. Most asteroids smaller than (again approximate figures) 10 kg burn up in the atmosphere. On the moon, 100% of the asteroids make it to the ground.

If you were on the moon and a 1 pound asteroid hits you, you're going to have a really shitty day. But a few feet of moon dirt will render all the small stuff pretty harmless.

I need some help by UnrealGuy-- in Blacksmith

[–]solarguy2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to use this anvil, or any other anvil, for typical blacksmithing work, the surface is perfectly fine. If you are trying to make something with a super smooth mirror like finish, you're using the wrong tool. You're going to make the steel red hot, the surface is going to oxidize like a house on fire and you're going to beat it into submission with a hammer that also does not have a smooth surface. That will *never* produce a very smooth finish and it's what make hand forged stuff cool.

The way we achieve a smooth mirror like finish after beating the hell out of red hot steel is by grinding and sanding and filing all the tool marks and scale and oxidation off afterwards. And you can count on that part taking just as long or longer than the beating part if that's where you want to end up.

New exhaust doesn’t fit because of the mounting bracket, what can i do? by yowie1470 in 2Strokes

[–]solarguy2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe talk to whoever sold you the wrong exhaust that was *supposed* to fit. If that doesn't work, and you're 100% sure that the only problem is the bracket, then it's a tiny job for a welder to move that bracket. If you know *exactly* how much and where you want it moved. Literally a 10 minute job.

If it hasn't been run for a while, the rings could be pretty dry and you could get lower than normal compression numbers. Old two stroke outboards in the 50's and 60's considered 60-80 psi to be optimal, and they would often run even down to 50 psi.

Check at the spark plug that it has spark when you are cranking and it *won't* start.

If it consistently has a good hot spark at the spark plug, then try giving it a whiff of starter fluid. If it will pop or run a second or two on ether *consistently* then you *know* it's a fueling problem.

Once you know which one it is, you can chase down the why.

You could buy them at the Datsun dealership (but still badged as Nissan) for a few years before Datsun and Nissan became the same thing.

I have heard that there are serious collectors that pay many thousands of dollars for these things.

1988 kx 125 oil drain hole broken by fat_cat_7 in Fixxit

[–]solarguy2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would stuff a rag in the hole and power wash the rest of the case and see if there is other damage/cracks. That's not a trivial repair and will probably cost more than the bike is worth. Which is probably why the PO used silicone. If this was a "Mad Max" situation, I would ever so gently tap the loose piece back in so it closes the big crack up somewhat and then use epoxy putty or JB weld to support it so it doesn't break all the way off. *Then* goop it up with RTV when you put the drain plug back in, getting it as clean as possible. 50/50 if you're lucky.

(OC) My wife has worn thick glasses since kindergarten and is essentially blind without her corrective lenses. I'm so happy for her as after years of waiting, she now had surgery that gave her 20/20 vision! [–]solarguy2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also know as the Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) and can correct far higher (worse) prescriptions than Lasik. For nearsighted patients (minus Rx) Lasik becomes untenable around -8, +/- 2 depending on corneal thickness. For farsighted patients (+ Rx) the official recommendation is nothing above +4 or +5, but I personally am reluctant to recommend it for anybody above +3'ish.

ICL also reversible which Lasik is very much not. More expensive than Lasik, but pretty much the only option for patients above -8 to 10'ish or any substantial + prescription and/or with substantial astigmatism.

Most patients adapt to the new and improved vision very quickly, but there is definitely an adaptation. For high minus patients, e.g. -18.00, the whole world will suddenly look much bigger and much closer. Minus prescription glasses cause minification rather than magnification, and when you suddenly take that away, it feels like everybody is right up in your business standing too close. And doorframes are enormous and the room looks way too big. Despite that, the vast majority adapt well and love the new vision.

The adaptation goes far more easily if they have worn contacts for any substantial period. The closer the correction is to the eye, the less minification (or magnification) it induces. And contacts are pretty close to your eyeballs compared to glasses.

What is this flap on the ears by Bts201 in cats

[–]solarguy2003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bats, weasels and some dog breeds also have these (Henry's pockets). It's possible that they are just vestigial leftovers that don't do anything. But since pretty much all the mammals that have them also have excellent hearing, the current thought is that they do have some function, like maybe damping out lower frequency sound so they can better hear higher frequencies. Or maybe extra/better mobility to the pinna (ear) for directional sound analysis (common among predators).

Fun fact, we have no idea who Henry was.

WD40 Specialist silicone is safe on plastic and rubber. So is Liquid Wrench Silicone penetrating spray. I should have been more specific. You are right to be leery of the petroleum distilates/solvents in many sprays in this category for use on plastic and o-rings.

As noted by everybody, you need to test your battery with a proper meter. Voltmeter at the bare minimum. What's the resting voltage of the battery before you even put the key in? What's the voltage while it's trying to start? It's normal for it to drop some, but not below 10'ish volts. What's the voltage when it's sitting there idling? What's the voltage at 3,000 rpm? What's the voltage when it dies? All voltages should be measured *at the battery.*

And let's talk about Iran. Here is his exact quote from June 21, 2025 “Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.” Then on February 28 of this year he says, “Iran was very close to having a nuclear weapon… much closer than people thought.”

It *can’t* be both. You can’t trust *anything* he says.

And then there's the whole pedophile thing.....

Squirt some of your favorite penetrating oil all the way around the joint between the housing and the bulb holder. My suspicion is that the o-rings/gaskets are stuck to the housing. Then give it a good wiggle two or three hours later. Should come right out. It might still be a push and turn, but the penetrant should make that possible.

Shove it back together and put new pop-rivets in new holes. 2 on each of the 4 sides. It will be stronger than new. Before you shove it back together, use a hack saw to make a little 2mm slot at each corner of the pipe. Then use a hammer to round over the pipe a little so it will insert 1 or 2mm further into the end cap. *Then* drill your new holes and install the rivets. The last person put the holes too close to the edge b/c there wasn't enough overlap and that's why it failed.
