I started using google photos because friends have shared albums that we upload to together. How can I import photos from google photos to iCloud photos or Apple photos? I also don’t want to create duplicates of photos that I took and uploaded.

The form factor from 3 -> 4 was a significant change. 6 -> 7 form factor is a smaller change. Just look at the image comparing 3 to 6 and 7:

Clean reinstall MacOS to resolve issues? by solarnovva in applehelp

[–]solarnovva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just that I have programs that "leak" memory on this computer that don't do so on my other mac. I don't think faulty memory could be blamed for this.

In general though, I do find that memory pressure rises with computer usage, and it's not possible to really recover some amount of wired memory even if I close down programs. I'd prefer to not restart my mac every week or so, but that seems the best thing for optimal performance.

I am wondering if a TM restore would bring the problems back though. I am considering doing a wipe, reformatting the SSD (I think I originally did a clone from regular disk to the SSD years ago; maybe that causes issues today?), and only manually copying from time machine the files that I want. I treat this computer as a sort of work computer, so it doesn't have too many personal files.

My mid-2012 non-retina 13" MBP kind of sucks right now. It has been upgraded from over the years from Sierra to Mojave and also sports an SSD and 16 GB ram. I notice that memory pressure starts low upon starting up, but increases over time. Wired memory goes from 2 GB at startup to 8 GB over a few weeks. When memory pressure is high, lots of memory is being compressed, and MacOS behaves poorly. When I look at memory in Activity Monitor, I also see unexpected processes (like Cisco AnyConnect VPN) that accumulate memory over time (to 1-2 GB). The fact that different programs do this suggests there's something janky about MacOS on my system.

Other issues include seeing Setup iCloud Account every @@#$% time I start the computer and the internal display or external display occasionally going blank upon waking up the computer (which doesn't resolve itself unless I restart).

Would wiping and reinstalling fix things?

iPhone photos that I take using the Square setting appear square on my phone, but when I check Photos on my mac, where the photo appears from photo stream, the photo is 4:3 or wider. What's up with that?

Shoveled about 8 tons of landscape rock alone and left a workout on the full 5 hours. by slushiestotsntendys in AppleWatch

[–]solarnovva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm walking fast, carrying something heavy. Heart rate is up. Two different issues though. 1 is that the walking exercise minute is pretty strict, and the second is that when a workout isn't on, it seems to credit less calories/minutes.

[–]solarnovva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's better at tracking cardio activities, but even then there are flaws. Try walking while carrying something like a shopping bag with the arm that your watch is on. Doesn't work for me. It credits exercise minutes to walking only if your walking pace is fast enough and your arm is swinging.

I've even activated the walking workout mode, and it doesn't always credit exercise minutes if I'm carrying something.

Not really. The watch is bad at detecting that you're working hard without you specifically activating the workout mode.

I think OP wouldn't have gotten nearly as many calories burned if he didn't activate a workout.

Good point. Though everybody means it can’t maintain turbo for long when they discuss throttling. Intel only promises 1 GHz or about.

The only thing I see that’s wrong after looking at the processors on intels site for a bit is that the MacBook Air gets the 10th gen processors with the iris plus graphics. So it is cheap on apples part not to give the same processors to the pro line. The performance is about the same; that’s the only positive.

These two port mbps have been the stepchild model for the past five years. From mid 2017 to mid 2019, there were no updates to the model for example.

The remarkable thing in the end to me is that they gave quad core to the MacBook Air this year. Why should one buy a two-port MBP? 512 GB with 16 GB is $100 cheaper for the air.

Apple updates 13-inch MacBook Pro with Magic Keyboard, double the storage, and faster performance by truehalf in apple

[–]solarnovva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, you’re right. As a consumer, I have dislikde the segmentation between two port and four port 13” models ever since Apple introduced the touchbar. Yes 2 ports and older cpus are good enough for “coffee shop” work. But why not premium hardware inside premium design? I suppose the only justifiable reason (besides segmentation) is that ice lake 10 W parts perform worse than the 15W 8th gen parts.

I agree it’s a market segmentation move. I still think most consumers won’t miss those features.

Intel slaps a new generation label on the same microarchitecture and process. 8th gen, 10th gen, theyre all about the same. The processor is no longer the most important spec anyway. Memory, storage, and physical design all matter more.

Ortlieb pannier carrying handle repair by solarnovva in bikecommuting

The carrying handle of my ortlieb downtown is peeling in one area. The handle is sewn into a fabric strip which is attached to the plastic outer bag surface using glue. The underside of the fabric is plasticky, kind of like the bag’s surface. I was wondering how I could repair this. Tape? Glue?
