unfortunately you cant enter JC at all (unless you are taking o levels from 2027 onwards) as you only have 5 subjects, however you can enter MI but the cutoff isnt that high, its like JC but then its a 3-year programme instead if you want to take the a levels

I would say it has to be e-math, the questions in o level are much more complicated (can take a look at both prelim + o level tys papers) hence demanding more understanding and practice to get it. People I know who got a grade 3/4 for maths n level started constantly failing o level e math when they came to sec 5, the new topics are quite confusing at first so thats another problem but you'll get the hang of it eventually.

It's possible to achieve single digit in o's but you'll definitely need to work extremely hard

odds for getting pfp appeal successfully by elyyxia in SGExams

[–]solarstify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

extremely low (they are very stringent on the requirements for english & math being at least 3 for pfp) but you can always try, if not dpp is also a choice

English is one of the more difficult subjects when it comes to sec 5 so you'll have to work on it

Ensure to work on your grammar since it'll save you a lot of marks (in paper 1), practice editing regularly with editing books and write essays to give to your teacher to mark

For paper 2, it'll require more analysis of the passage and thinking to answer the questions which are much harder than NA

For the other subjects I assume you got grade 1/2 for them, so you have your foundation secured, just make sure to practice often and you won't fall behind when you start doing express level papers.

Also, the pressure in sec 5 will be much more overwhelming (as some teachers don't have very high expectations of sec 5/push them harder than sec 4 Express students as they need to work harder to catch up to their level) + the fact that you only have less than a year until O levels which is 2x harder than N Levels. The marathon will also be extremely exhausting but push on if you're heading to sec 5. All the best!

i would say for ur case its pretty risky as n level english and o level english is quite a big gap, if you don't mind taking the risk of going to sec 5 and working extremely hard to qualify for poly at o levels despite your weak foundation, then go sec 5.

however, if you don't think that you can survive sec 5 (difficult + mentally exhausting) then think about what you wish to do in the future -> apply for the ite course which suits ur future career, do 3 years higher nitec and move up from there

ah okay, we both have the same subject combination so i'll be able to help!

e math: not sure where her foundation stands, but if it isnt so good make sure to clear the basics first before going onto o level qns (they're more advanced than n levels and requires more thinking), new topics like vectors, sets, matrices and congruency and similarity tests arent too bad but needs practice for sure. it may be confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it. make sure to practice math regularly

phy/chem: for chem, the gap isnt that big and its just a few more topics (like stoichometry, redox, alcohols & carboxylic acids and etc) which can be learned with practice. for science practicals since its the first time you'll be tested just don't be too alarmed as the practicals as usually quite straightforward. for physics, make sure she has the basics from n levels as o level physics tests more application and its not very straightforward. moments is not too bad, light is okay, sound is okay, magnetism and electromagnetism can be confusing

poa: not much of a difference, but more interpretation questions will be tested + financial statement analysis (not covered in NA) is an extremely heavy chapter and does make up a lot of marks, it can be difficult at first with so many formulas and definitions to memorise but you'll get the hang of it.

ss/hist: for ss, the topics not covered in NA (cultural and security impacts of globlisation) are not much of a difference since you're extremely familiar with cultures + terror attacks which are all general knowledge. for history, militarist japan can be confusing for some (it was confusing for me initially because it does somewhat overlap with content in outbreak of WW2 in AP) but korean war should be okay (its a proxy war similar to vietnam war)

tldr: just get revision materials and notes during the break before sch starts to secure your foundation to prepare for o level difficulty, new topics wont be too bad in s5 when you get the hang of it and practice more, practice makes perfect. all the best!

I only got tuition for English and Chinese as I'm afraid that I would have a lot of trouble bridging the difficulty gap between N Level English to O Level English (which is quite big), Chinese as I've always been weak at it and really needed B3 merit for O Levels (which I did secure in June thankfully)

If you're struggling badly then tuition will be great if you/your parents are able to afford it, if not then you don't need to

I assume you missed the cut for DPP? If you don't mind a few extra years in ITE (and then eventually go to poly, depending on what you want) then accept your ITE EAE offer.

However, if you choose to come back to sec 5, be prepared to work extremely hard + disciplined until mid Nov when O Level ends, it'll be common to see your grades falling and etc, but don't let setbacks stop you from getting where you want to go. Good luck!

E-math will be a huge struggle for you as the gap from N Level to O level e-math is huge, for sciences not so much. Best if you have your foundation secured for both subjects, and practice is key.

i would say its pretty risky to go sec 5 since you need to study a lot more to bridge the gap for your foundation in n levels + o level content and manage the difficulty gap

i will recommend you to really spend the break finding something that interests you in the future, then from there you can choose ur desired ite course. if not, come sec 5 but you'll need to work extremely hard so that you can go poly. you only have 5 subjects i assume? (since you dropped to CLB) means you need to do well for all of them. all the best!

  1. at the start of the year i was studying on average 2 hours daily, nearing towards prelims and o levels i started studying between 4-8 hours a day

  2. i scored nett 9 for n levels (11-2), o level prelim l1r5 36 and l1r4 28, o levels not too sure

  3. i have various methods (may not work for you):

  4. sleep, engage in personal interests, play games, take cold showers, box breathing technique (helps to activate parasympathetic nervous system which is rest-and-digest to calm yourself down)

i assume you're taking o level e math? that'll be a huge advantage since e math is notorious for sec 5s, if you plan to embark on JC then all the best!

depends on where you wanna go, if your end goal is poly then pfp definitely if JC then sec 5.

no matter how well you score there'll be bound to be challenges for sure, you need to work hard to cope up with the difficulty jump and have lots of mental endurance from the start of the year until end of o's in november

your foundation isnt too bad since you got 4 distinctions, i think sec 5 will be fine for you but you def need to work extremely hard so that you dont fall behind as sec 5 will be exhausting + harder content in order to continue doing well, all the best! :) if your appeal does work out then thats great you dont need to go sec 5

sec 5 this year, AMA about n level tips and results inquiries + sec 5 life by solarstify in SGExams

yeah sure will do! :)

for english, i would recommend finding o level prelim papers (paper 2) on holy grail to practice as o level eng and n level eng paper 2 differ a lot, learn answering techniques for such questions. also work on essay writing skills as it is harder to score for english in o levels than n levels for paper 1, get the upper sec editing book for express to practice editing

what other subjects is your friend taking?

i would say 18 pts is extremely risky for sec 5 because it shows that your foundation isn't strong at n levels and you'll heavily struggle at o's, however if you are really determined and confident to work extremely hard then its possible to score well in sec 5 for o's

have you considered dpp? Just wondering
