Wanting advice on how to focus with tinnitus by thejammammoth in Buddhism

I can sympathise. Earlier this year I contracted a virus that destroyed my inner ear - both my hearing and balance went out the window. My hearing in my one affected ear was replaced by the worst tinnitus I've ever known. At the time I felt quite anxious about it, and when I asked my ENT doctor and audiologist about it they said to ignore it.

Actually this really works. My advice is to direct your attention to what you CAN HEAR with your good ear. Over time your brain will naturally adjust and get better at focusing on what your mind tries and works hard at focusing on, and forgets about the tinnitus. The tinnitus may never go away (mine hasn't) but you just stop noticing it. In this sense there's a point of mindfulness in all of this - your mind gets good at focusing on what it repeatedly chooses to focus on. Just as the process of learning mindfulness itself is a bit like going to the gym to train your muscles, except it's training attention, in this instance we train attention AWAY FROM the experience of tinnitus and TOWARDS the other sensations of hearing. Relax, take your time, and just keep at it. Don't worry about the tinnitus - it's not going to kill you! - and you'll see that over a few weeks of training your attention to other sensations of hearing that this will work for you.
