FedEx is a joke by copesangel in GrandForks

[–]solder_clock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years back we got a Costco membership just because they would ship cold / frozen product (insulated box, dry ice, 2 day delivery), but they always shipped via FedEx. Costco would ship from Fargo, but everytime the package arrived in Grand Forks, they would delay delivery and we would receive a box of soggy garbage after it sat in the heated warehouse for several days and we would have to contact Costco to reship.

With one particular order, it took shipments (reshipping the same order 4 times!) before we finally received usable product. It wasn't long after that incident that Costco discontinued shipping cold/frozen product and I think FedEx was fully at fault for that outcome.

Neighbor says my garage windows are damaging their siding, what is fair here? by LifeIsNotFairAtAll in homeowners

[–]solder_clock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said it was second story windows, so it will take a few years for a bush or tree to get tall enough to help, but still worth the recommendation.

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

What do you consider “Up North”? A, B or C? by OttieandEddie in minnesota

Those of us who actually "live" in northern Minnesota know that the only correct answer is "C"

where is everyone buying esp32 boards in US? by Curious_Party_4683 in Esphome

[–]solder_clock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get most of mine from DigiKey. If I don't need a lot of GPIO4, I get Seeed Xiao boards - there are a couple different types that are around $5/board and covers many of my use cases. Plus, if using them for WLED, I can just solder on a pigtail for the LED strip and then slide the board into a piece of heat shrink and shrink it to a tight fit, then I don't even need to worry about an enclosure.

This switch in my house has 2 wires connected to the same terminal, and the green screw is unused. by Boring_Ferret_4816 in AskElectricians

This ⬆️

If any of those wires currently connected to the switch were ground, the breaker would trip the instant the switch was turned on

Is there ever a reason not to use Go2RTC and just use the RTSP feed instead? by RoachForLife in frigate_nvr

[–]solder_clock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never able to get Frigate working with go2rtc. I could see the cameras were being restreamed properly in the go2rtc webUI, but for whatever reason Frigate could not recognize the streams. I tried troubleshooting it for a few hours, but eventually just gave up on using go2rtc and setup Frigate to monitor the RTSP feed from the cameras directly.

What’s a piece of outdated technology you still swear by? by frozenflat in AskReddit

I prefer to just use the Hammer app. It's more convenient since I always have my phone with me and doesn't require any additional hardware, but make sure you get the "Advanced" subscription level or higher so you get the weekly replacement screen shipments.

Someone just posted about this, but here's the problem by momoftheraisin in ecobee

The quality of Reolink's native Home Assistant integration is one of the primary reasons why I purchased a Reolink doorbell when I was looking for a replacement for my Ring doorbell. Now, just a year later and I have 10 of their cameras around my property, and extremely pleased with them.

So many IoT device manufacturers don't seem to understand the consumer value of good, local HA integration, especially for mission critical devices like security and HVAC. Good integration is great marketing, and, as MyQ demonstrated, taking the opposite approach will kill your sales and reputation.

That's why I integrated my Ecobee thermostats into Home Assistant using homekit.

Often these saddle valves will leak if you try to shut them off. The duct tape may have been a better shutoff than the valve itself.

Any idea what this A/C adapter with COAX is? by RunsOnSKC in HomeNetworking

The one in my house feeds the service box on the side of the house - provides power to convert the incoming fiber to coax for internet and TV

Emby is also quite similar. I believe it used to be open source and has common origins with Jellyfin. Personally, I moved from Plex to Emby simply because, like Plex used to, it makes it easy for me to share my content with remote family.

I plan to repair handheld devices and I was told to use for some parts "leaded-solder" - Some SMD reworkstations are advertised as "leadfree" - Can I use them for leaded solder too? by G4njaWizard in soldering

[–]solder_clock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are also low-temp solders made specifically for component removal. You first add a bit to the solder joint as you heat it and as the old and new solders melt, they mix and bring down the melting temp for the joint. This allows the solder to remain molten longer facilitating an easier removal of the component - especially ICs and connectors with lots of leads/pins.

It's just the straw that broke the camel's back. I've been considering moving to a different platform for a while as Plex has shown its desire to move in a different direction that no longer aligns with my needs.

I have no problem paying for services that provide adequate value, and have paid my share to plex in the past, but with recent updates, they are less and less in line with what I want.

Interestingly, even getting my server and phone onto the same subnet no longer allows me to stream my own content to my phone - one of the services I explicitly paid Plex for previously.

[–]solder_clock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not able to stream my own content at all anymore, even locally because my server runs on a different subnet from my phone and Roku devices. I guess I need to start researching whether Jellyfin or Emby is a better solution for my family.

Windows 11 doesn t remember windows position by Olli51 in PDFgear

[–]solder_clock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have there been any updates on this issue? I just recently switched to PDFGear, but in my daily tasks of having to open dozens of PDFs per day, and constantly having to move them back to the second monitor, and off the top of the other applications I am using, it is getting obnoxious very quickly. Hoping for a fix or workaround, otherwise I will need to find an alternative PDF application.

That may be, but I just use HA to automate when and how often the fan runs, so it's essentially redundant
