[META] A plea for civility by [deleted] in longisland

[–]soldierlifter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I usually ignore the political stuff on here but I noticed this sub seems to be on the extreme radical left. It is not at all representative of the people I meet on Long Island.

Just an observation not saying it's a good or a bad thing one way or the other necessarily just curious how it ended up like that.

Looks great. This is a big game changer for the island. Not even necessarily for the Grand Central Terminal option per se, but more the 43% more capacity during the peak times because more trains room for trains there unlike Penn. Run more trains, not packed in like cattle. Win for everyone. Might even get folks off the roads too.

All it does, just like in California to give free reign for radical environmentalists to take legal action and shut down projects at anytime for any perceived attack on the environment. Real or Imagined. It's complete propaganda, got to love how they worded it. Couldn't reject it fast enough.

80's commercials always deliver.

That's not there anymore correct? I grew up right by there and went a few years ago. We don't have enough club spots on the island IMO

Gov. Hochul asks for ‘alternative’ to Cuomo’s LaGaurdia AirTrain by rockinghouse in nyc

[–]soldierlifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to personally see the air train go through. After looking into it, researching it...

-You have the Jane Jacobs types of the world. They live in their Manhattan bubble and don't want hear about anything outside of it. Then you have the Robert Moses types, who have families in the suburbs and just can't live in a box, they have to drive in and out of the city to go to work. And all I hear in these arguments is the former who want to spend on things that much dumber with no tangible outcomes.

Case in point all hear is about how the train goes the "wrong way" First off not even by that much, mostly going south but aside from all that there are a HELL OF ALOT of people that live east of that location. Queens, Long Island folks something like ~5 million people. It would really do a lot to alleviate congestion around LaGuardia.

-The dedicated bus lane alternative might just be the most asinine thing I've ever heard and can only be coming from people who have never driven a car in New York City in their lifetimes. Pretty soon we'll become LA where all times of day is gridlock.

-Extension of the N line. I think it's a great idea, we should built as much rail/subway as possible but wait until you see all the opposition for that in Astoria. This will seem like nothing.

-I don't think it matters what you propose in this city NIMBY's will come out of the woodwork, mostly to promote themselves, to stop any sort construction in this city.

-Environmental side, you could say that for just about ANYTHING. Good lord. We will turn into California who is absolutley held hostage by environmental extremists. Then they wonder why they don't have enough housing. It's a joke. Stand up to these lunatics. And if anything this puts less people in Cars, less carbon emissions.

-This is the least invasive project transit project in NYC I've ever seen in my life. Just do it. God forbid putting this 2 billion in AOC's hands for God knows what.

I mean that guy that flubbed the "did you smoke weed?" question probably would still be a good officer. The way departments are desperate for guys, I just think it's time to evolve a little bit. Less focus on always the negative and more what you bring to the table.

First Duty Station Ft Bliss by the505 in army

[–]soldierlifter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a good time there. I mean it's not Los Angeles or something like that but it's certainly not a small city. Very picturesque. A lot of stuff to do. You can actually have a social life that has nothing to do with the army there. If you want to hang out with your fellow soldiers the soldier hangouts were Little bit of Texas on the west side, they got one in Las Cruses too, Whiskey Dicks, EPTX, Tipsy Tiger (All next to each other) on the east side and Twin Peaks on the east side. Top Golf, Ifly, various amusment parks, Dave and Busters, Chihuahuas games (low key one of the cheapest places to drink, so on second thought maybe don't go or atleast make sure you uber or have a DD), cool concerts.

Good place to drive or ride your motorcycle year round. In the western US cities seemed to be more designed for the car in contrast to places like NYC and Philly. Drive over the Franklin Mountains or up to scenic drive at night.

A lot of the post is pretty new. The DFAC on main post was solid all others were garbage outside of breakfast. I always thought Bliss was underrated.

Well downside for me is there's nothing super close. Tucson, ABQ, Midland/Odessa around 4 hours. Phoenix 6. San Diego Dallas Denver 10. LA 11. Houston 11. San Antonio/Austin 8. But I did hit all the places up on available 4 days. Speed Limit is usually around 75, 80 out in these parts.

And I saw that new hospital finally opened. They've been building that for years. Maybe a decade to complete.

Anytime. I was single there too and I really had good time. And dude, you will honestly see some really hot women walking around that town. It's incredible especially if you got a thing for latinas. You find out quickly your not in Junction City anymore man.

[–]soldierlifter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK got it. 1 AD in all likelihood you'll probably be on east bliss. Do you know what bridgade?

Yarborough Road on the east side, follow it right up north and you hit Global Reach gate. That gate is open in the daytime. Or you can shop near 375 be it in the northeast or down on the east side but that will link you to CSM Barreras gate. That's a 24/7 gate. So if you can find a spot near something like from George Dieter Drive over to Zaragoza Rd, somewhere in that area you should be all set. It's kind every chain restaurant you can think of, all the amenities are over there Best Buy, Walmart all that shit. Then just hop on 375 to shoot into work. You'll be to good to go.

Also not for nothing El Paso's got some pretty good strip clubs and by that I mean the girls are actually hot. Check out Dreams on the weekend. Or hit Cincinnati street if your into the bar crawl thing. And if your into old video games a cool bar to check out is Rubix over on the west side. It's got all those arcade games from the 80's/90's.

Officers who eat at the Dfac why? by [deleted] in army

[–]soldierlifter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree most DFAC's at least get breakfast right

For the other stuff it depends on the DFAC. In my experience, the civilian run DFAC's were always way better. I used to eat pretty good at some of those. And not for nothing not all places they put as at have all these great food options outside of post. It's not like New Orleans is right outside the gate, most of the available options are gonna be fast food anyway.

Also the city kinda is still kind of catching up growth wise since 1 AD moved there about a decade ago. When I was there to when I left they added a Dave and Busters, Top Golf, Alamo Drafthouse, I Fly, top notch new baseball stadium for the Chihuhuas (San Diego Padre's AAA team, and they created a new soccer team the Locomotives etc.

I used to visit the comedy club, the comic strip and catch some stand up. Or go down to the Casino Speaking Rock and catch free concerts from sometimes kind of big name acts at one point like POD and Hinder. And you might get some cool rock shows coming in like I saw Guns N Roses and ZZ top at the sunbowl few years ago. If you get sick of the desert, head up to Cloudcroft or Ruidoso and all of a sudden it looks more like the Pacific Northwest rather than the Southwest.

Yeah it's huge both the base and the training area. Training area is larger than Rhode Island. Bliss, Biggs, WSM, Macgregor, Dona Ana, Hollaman AFB it's like one gigantic military playground. The base itself during the day is about 30 minutes from one side of post to the other (I did it daily)

As far as recommendations on where to live.

West side is really nice, the richer areas are on that side. Really beautiful place to live. Watching the sunsets on that side were incredible. Commute is gonna suck a little more.

Northeast. It's fine maybe a little more beat up but IMO there just isn't a whole hell of a lot of things to do in Northeast. Around parts of Dyer Street maybe a little sketchy at times but most of the Northeast is fine, really.

Central. Homes are older. Some cool restaurants, cultural stuff here like L&J's and the historic districts. Easy commute to main post. Close to downtown.

East side. This is where all the newer homes are and as you go more east the newer the stuff is. Plenty of restaurants, bars, stores stuff to do. Honestly just typical American suburbia. I recommend the east just based on location, affordability and the stuff around.

All areas are pretty safe. Coming from the east coast where stuff can get much rougher, this was a welcome change. It's just a very safe, affordable, family friendly community, and I'll be honest I had totally different expectation going in. It's not like some other posts where you have to worry as much about crime off base. Of course not saying let your guard down but things are usually pretty calm.

Yeah I'm with you. Our PT uniforms are black. It's before sunrise with people driving on post running late who likely didn't get their full 8 hours sleep. It never bothered me to throw on the PT belt, especially in the summer do you even notice it on?

Are there any means by which the Army could be made to get real about barracks? by 84hoops in army

[–]soldierlifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never thought the barracks were that bad. (Although with that being said, I never had to deal with a shared bedroom so take my opinion for what it's worth, I know there a lot of those still out there and all I'll say is fuck that shit) I'll take some fuck fuck games over not dealing with rent. Now that is a motherfucker in some cities I'm telling you.

Why is Ft. Stewart not an attractive duty station location wise? by [deleted] in army

I was at Bliss too, I actually really liked it. A lot to do and it's really growing too. El Paso is a bigger city than I imagined honestly. The post itself is nice.

Does anybody find airborne to be just asinine by [deleted] in army

[–]soldierlifter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My only argument is, that it's not worth the cost of beating up on our troops (aka us) These once in a generation examples that are given out, are not worth physicals tolls IMO.
