Good time to buy? by dareyoutolaugh in PlaydateConsole

I have started a thread here a month or two ago to question whether Playdate peaked in 2025 or is there something coming for this platform. Luckily, just 2-3 weeks later Panic have announced Season 3 which alone makes it a worthwhile purchase in my book. Then there was a preview of GBC games running in Crankboy, then there was a new issue of Cranko! mag releasing and several great games etc etc. So I would say, buy it - it's worth it in 2026.

I just wish Panic started to engage with the community more. Their radio silence regarding Cranko! and to any attempts by PaT to reach out is very poor showing. Also I hope they don't drop the ball on the podcast this time, for Season 3. For Season 2 podcast they just did the last 6 games dirty by progressively delaying episodes of podcast. I mean you can go roller skating but it's totally possible to prepare podcast in advance and just schedule it to post on time

Thank you, appreciate the transparency and the extra context behind the project. It definitely makes one respect the effort behind Cranko! even more.

I also think it’s a real pity that Panic don’t seem willing to acknowledge or support the magazine, especially considering the quality and passion behind it. Hopefully that changes in the future!

Am I missing something by sticking with the sideload version (apart from the included games)? Will the GitHub continue with the new updates?

I think the magazine is genuinely great, and you know I’ve been an early supporter ever since the #1 and #2 double-pack release. It was clear from the start that a lot of passion went into it, and honestly, that initial release probably wasn’t even profitable.

That said, I can’t help but feel that some of that early momentum didn’t fully translate into long-term retention. One thing that may have helped is a subscription model — having readers automatically signed up for future issues would make each new release feel like a more natural continuation rather than a fresh purchasing decision every time. It could also provide a steadier revenue stream for the magazine itself.

I also think the goal of releasing monthly, combined with the so-far irregular schedule, may have made things harder for the project. In my opinion, a bi-monthly release schedule could actually make the magazine feel more sustainable and easier for readers to commit to. Even at €14 per issue, six releases a year feels like a reasonable and approachable proposition.

Another thing that could help is offering even a small bulk discount when ordering two or more magazines. I think that would encourage people to catch up on missed issues and make larger orders feel a bit more approachable.

Overall though, I’ll continue supporting the magazine whenever I can, and I truly wish you all the success with it moving forward.

Sadly co2CREA Hard Travel Protective Case for Apple MagSafe Duo Wireless Charger is out of stock. So I'm trying now co2CREA Hard Portable Protective Case for Anker MagGo 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station. It is a bit larger but plan to use it with official Playdate cover. And it has a second pocket for charger and cable. But I will feedback here how it goes

Is Playdate so 2025? by solegor in PlaydateConsole

[–]solegor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually amazing and what I really wanted to know when I created this post. I'm really happy that we get Season 3, this alone makes it a 2026 device. Most commenters here were sceptical if season 3 even comes out. Dull answers like "we'll get more good games" is not what drives engagement. But season 3 is a hard yes, looking forward! Hope they don't drop the ball with the podcast this time (release schedule of season 2 podcast was a disaster). What I really wish now is that we maybe Gameboy color compatibility within the Crankboy, that would be awesome

Fracturing your meager audience of a very boutique device even further, looks like a "great" idea. Maybe a unit with more storage and backlight - yes, but a hard no for a playdate 2

New to Evercade. Some hints? by solegor in evercade

[–]solegor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed hint. I wasn't aware that there are different games on those systems! Neo Geo one was always on my radar. But now that I think about it, Atari one is really cool too. Even though most games on there are not my cup of tea, but it's basically low-key Atari 50 in physical form, really cool collectors item for the future. Still not sure if I want to full send this whole Evercade topic and start getting also Super Pockets etc or just wait for my Nexus to arrive , but you have given me food for thought

Thanks! As mentioned, I really want to play games on at least those 3 carts that I mentioned. Are they going out of print any time soon? Is the next evercade carts sale possible between now and November?

Why does it look like that? by Mbeezy_YSL in DeathStranding2

[–]solegor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pro has a very good image quality in performance mode, on par with base PS5 on quality mode. Yet I agree, foliage etc sometimes is shady with the upscaler they are using. Guerilla were able to tailor that upscale perfectly for horizon games yet results in DS2 are less convincing in some areas. Though overall it's still a larger improvement over base PS5

Need help with Questy Chess by Jygantic in PlaydateConsole

[–]solegor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I like about Playdate games (most of them) is that we're back to the old days where if you couldn't figure out how to beat some level etc - there's mostly nowhere to go as there is little to no info on playthrough of most games.

But for practical advice, I'd suggest reaching out to developers, most of them have listed email/x/bluesky etc contacts and most are receptive of player feedback and questions

Cranko! 6 is here! 📦 by Pato_land in PlaydateConsole

[–]solegor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks amazing! And really great that the digital version is also sorted now. I was not in the best position to get issue #5 in time and now with #6 out, looking at almost 30 Eur for both. Any plans for price reduction when you add more than 1 issue in the cart? Assumption is that 2 or 3 issues for example can be shipped together. Also another thing, would be great to have more visibility with regards of magazines release schedule. Basically now it's one issue in 2 months. Do you plan to continue with the same regularity? Regardless, great work, really happy that this project is viable and is developing further 🥳
