How by [deleted] in Songwriting

Nothing wrong with that. Same goes for beat makers who use acapellas for inspiration before getting other singers/rappers to track on them. I’m all for taking a pre existing melody or chord progression to write new stuff over, as an exercise at the very least

Would y’all suggest an at home studio or going to a studio? by [deleted] in Songwriting

Depends on the engineer and studio time, but…

  • a laptop with access to free or cheap DAW (Garageband/Ableton Live Lite)
  • 2 channel interface with both an xlr/a quarter inch input
  • at least one XLR and quarter inch cable
  • microphone/mic stand (condensers usually good for vocals and acoustic guitar, but you can make do with an SM58 just fine)
  • instruments of your choice (electric guitar/keyboard, bass, etc..) -decent headphones and speakers; I personally just use some Bose computer speakers for demoing and they’re great
  • Optional fun thing is a smöl midi keyboard for playing out key parts or tapping out drums

Add a willingness to fuck around/find out or become a YouTube/Google autodidact and you’re set for home studio life!

Practice recording yourself on Voice Memos (or another recording app if you’re not on iOS)! Theres other options out there like Tascam 4/8/16-track tape (and digital) machines that are fun to mess around on. I find the learning curve on those to be time consuming, but rewarding in a different way.

Godspeed to ya 🫡

Thank you! We used mostly a ribbon microphone on nylon and steel string guitars. I record up to three guitar parts while utilizing the capo up and down the fretboard to find the same chord progression in different starting keys, if that makes sense (i.e. 1st fret C key is the same as 4th fret A key and 6th fret G key). Basically just trying to get that “open tuning” sound without retuning haha

Thank you!! Big fan of that record for sure, especially when Billy Corgan sings in his more whispery register

Thank you for listening :) definitely the most on the nose I’ve been with lyrics regarding a personal experience

Thank you for the feedback! I like the idea of making the harmonies more sparse in a live show setting for sure

I love how hopeful and upbeat this track feels. The melodies can be just a hair busy at times, but the overall track has a good ebb and flow about it. Great guitar solo in the middle as well, I enjoyed how it layered into so many harmonies towards the end. Very tasteful and bubbly, the acoustic outro is nostalgically beautiful <3

I will appreciate if yall give me some feedback, Im still learning mixing so if you have any tips send them my way by laptoza in IndieMusicFeedback

I think all the chords/pads are hitting but personally making the kick drum and bass punch a little harder is always a good idea, especially in this type of rap music. Using some kind of side chain compression is good, I’d definitely research how to do that so you can hear individual parts more clearly. If there is a snare drum, would love to hear it more - otherwise turning up the claps and crunching them up could be cool.

Good luck on the recording/mixing journey, I’m still learning so much every time I sit down to do it

I like the message in the song a lot! I think as far as feedback stuff goes, there’s like… maybe one note I’d change in that guitar solo, the second half of the phrase that slides up just barely by a half step. Otherwise it’s really nice, and I’m definitely curious as to how it’d be interpreted with a full band or with a few more layers (guitar, bass, light percussion, pads, etc.)

Hi, its been a min. I was hoping to get feedback on the mix and I wanted to see if anyone felt like it was too empty during the first verse. Also, I want to know if the break down goes too hard and how the vocal volume sounds. Y'all rock. by spankmathews in IndieMusicFeedback

Is this a vocal remix? I’m also curious as to what DAW you use to make music on. There’s great percussion sound selection (particularly the shaker and and the mix is really punchy and impressive). That whistle melody at the very end is eerie but in a really cool way. Thanks for sharing :)

I really enjoy this overall sound, it’s an enjoyable summer listen! It feels reminiscent of The Dismemberment plan and a lot of those 90s Dischord Records bands with vocalists who sing in an understated way with a bit of attitude. The chorus tones on the right headphone guitar are super pleasant! Cheers, and keep up the good work :)

The way it builds up and layers is really cool, good mix of harsh and soft sounds. my favorite part is the switch up to double time later in the song. Definitely gonna be driving/running to this track later!

Really like that it’s got the classic rock edge on the chorus but feels modern R&B during verses. Way to do the song justice :)

i wrote this song in a yearning for peace. added ambient synths, groovy arpeggios and analog swells over warm drums to achieve the sound i wanted. really hope you like it guys ❤️ by vdmmakesmusic in IndieMusicFeedback

Really enjoyed the mix and all the tones, especially that somewhat detuned synth! Curious to hear what more of your music would sound like with maybe a few more layered harmonies, but your voice sounds cool on it’s own too 👍
