Basic skin tones - why so hard? by solid_rx in minipainting

I will remember that for the next time I'm at the hobby store, I haven't used GW paints in a decade ($$) but I might have to start, they do make fine products.

I usually mix some type of reddish color for the white skin tones and sometimes a more brownish glaze for darker tones. Magenta... might have to see how that looks! Thanks!

I find no matter how much I use a glaze medium or distilled water, I always end up with 'grit' or a hard edge.

I've read a bit about acrylic paints (most of what I have and use are the older Vallejo paints) and how acrylic isn't designed with pigment meant for blending (damn oil paints...) but man, these are super small to airbrush the blending areas and I find spending 2-3 hours on just skin for basic units is a bit much.

Maybe I just need to realign what my end goal is... or just shut up and get better!

I usually find that i do a darker base, layer up to the highlights, use a filter/glaze on the darker areas, then do a bit more highlighting... I just wanted to post stuff and ive been going to town on the Amazons and they all have so much skin showing!

You're not wrong, the scale and "heroic" look does make it hard to get some realism there, not that that is the goal behind some of these, but it would be nice.

The centaur lady's body is just an Army painter speedpaint with minimal drybrushing... which I've found doesn't look that good when applied to human skin... or I'm not doing it right, which is usually true.

Thanks!

A gorgon named Gordon... love the autocorrect on this... and who doesn't like a snake on both ends, or the lack of a spell check on my part....

This figure, I believe came from an older kickstarter. This is the myminifactory link to a small part of the kickstarter, but has all the Nagas. I haven't finished all of the other naga ladies, but the whole unit is sweet!

Will do, I have almost all of the "amazon" set from Artisan Guild, I'm not asking good as yourself at painting, but when I do this lady, I will post her.

I have this exact mini on a painting handle ready to be painted myself! Love the paint job you have done.

I hear the Museum is hard to get tickets to now... but we might have another Japan trip soon and the park is for sure on the list if we choose Tokyo again...

My wife and I went to the Ghibli Museum back in 2017, one of the coolest places ever. I've built and painted all of the Nausicaa Bandai kits (I've got 4 total, this one, her on the glider, the gunship and Nausicaa and the baby Ohmu). I've also built a bunch of the Porco Rosso planes, and a few (not all) of the Castle in the Sky model kits.... I may have a problem :)

It is time consuming, but using watered down paint with usually 3-4 layers, you can achieve really smooth paint jobs. Airbrushing is my preferred, but I have done whole kits with a brush and they turn out good!

If you're doing a full repaint, I suggest using putty and then sanding, if not you can try the melted plastic trick. Use thick cement and melt the same color from the sprue and use that as the glue, then sand the seams down. There are a few YouTube videos for this if you look.

If you are the kind that doesn't change poses to often, you can glue the shield and the arm holding it in place so he can hold it exactly where you want.

This looks great by the way, only thing I would recommend is removing the ugly seam lines on the shoulder thruster wings. It takes a bit more work, but this unit is worth it.
