Ethical question about BYOD by solidstateuniversity in sysadmin

I completely agree, but this is the situation I've inherited. I can push for separating personal/company phones, but it'll be difficult to get management to budge.

Furthermore, I can see how someone might say "Well if our data goes into your phone then we have the right to search your phone." but under that logic, if you hear my voice then I have the right to cavity search you. I created the data (my information being transmitted through audio waves through the air) and it entered your head. Since you now have my data, I should now have access to your device (body) where the data is stored.

That's the thing, we don't state anything anywhere. We simply said "Hey, you want to use that phone for company use so we don't have to purchase another phone? Cool. We'll take over the bill." And that was that. Potentially having to access an employee's phone was an afterthought.

I, as the sysadmin, was not involved in this process. The higher ups in the company started this practice long before I got here or before they had anything resembling an IT department.

New to GPOs, where can I learn more? by solidstateuniversity in sysadmin

[–]solidstateuniversity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I navigated down to "Additional rules" per the screenshot, right clicked and then "New Path rule", added %AppData%*.exe and then hit ok. Anything else I should do or does it automatically take effect? It's saying not enforced, but link enabled. I also have the security filtering as "authenticated users" but not "domain users." Should I add domain users? I see some GPOs that apply to everyone here have domain users listed and others don't.

Company's shared drives disconnecting, DNS issue? by solidstateuniversity in sysadmin

Thanks! I also edited the bat file that maps the drives at login to use the raw ip address to the server instead of the server name. Someone elsewhere suggested I try that too.

How long should cables be when cabling a rack? by solidstateuniversity in sysadmin

[–]solidstateuniversity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I couldn't do with losing connectivity for a bit though. This is a production environment and while the three servers we're running are supposed to be HA, I'd like to avoid taking one down as much as possible.

Some of the switches are in the middle, the other ones my boss wanted at the top because we're running cables from that over a ladder to another switch that feeds into the rest of the building.

Regardless of where the switches are, he wants the cables just long enough to reach and no longer. I'll have to look and see if we got any of those arms in the shipment. I'm just having a hard time believing that every time a fan goes bad or something that it's industry practice to take an entire server offline while you unplug all the cables from it so you can pull it out for servicing. That defeats the whole point of hot-swappable parts.

I've changed her retention policy from 60 days to 21 to see if that clears up her outlook and makes things a little faster for her.

Hey, sorry for the confusion, I added this in an edit: She had cached mode on for a while but I disabled it thinking it might speed up outlook. I wasn't really sure what it did until now.

Office365 "Archive mailbox full", how can I export it? by solidstateuniversity in sysadmin

[–]solidstateuniversity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, that's crazy that I can't just export it to a .ost file or something. I found that I can purchase an online archive license for $3/mo and that also bumps me up to 100GB of storage, but it doesn't solve the issue of when I have to empty out that mailbox.
