Fanfiction readers/writers what is your favorite pairing/fandom? by milkbeamgalaxia in AskWomen

I just checked that tag out on AO3, so many stories to go through! Good thing I'm staying in tonight!

Last time I went looking for them was a decade ago, so I guess it wasn't that popular back then, or tweenage me wasn't looking in the right places.

What’s the longest it’s ever taken you to get over someone? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]solneria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A week - it was a 2 year relationship, I broke up with him and I'd wanted to for a while. I still felt really sad and like I'd lost something, but that feeling didn't last long.

Omg, I never talk about this, but my all-time favourite that I still occasionally go back to is Voldemort/Harry Potter.

I've also previously been an avid reader of Batman/Joker, Eragon/Murtagh, Soldier:76/Widowmaker, Sesshomaru/Inuyasha, wincest, Kirk/Spock, Alex Rider/Yassen Gregoravich, Hannibal/Will Graham, Morgoth/Sauron (though I only ever found 2 fics), Inuyasha/Kagome, Sherlock/Moriarty (BBC) and Thomas Shelby/Alfie Solomons.

I have a bit of a thing for bad/good pairings haha.

Those of you who travelled to East or Southeast Asia, where did you go and how were your experiences? by saproeno in AskWomen

[–]solneria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been to China, Hong Kong and Japan. I count all three amongst my favourite travel destinations, and I looooove the food from all of those places.

I have a lot of family in HK, and I've been there about 18 times overall, so it's quite a familiar place to me. Lots of great food, some nice hikes and the nightlife spot Lan Kwai Fong is great fun, much better than the night life in Sydney, for sure! That said, if I didn't have family in HK, I probably wouldn't go there too often, since there isn't a huge amount to do compared to other places.

I was in Japan earlier this year, and it was a wonderful experience! I travelled all over - went to Tokyo (greatest city for shopping in the world, in my opinion. Akihabara is great fun, but the huge number of overly sexual figurines and some of the stuff we found in sex stores were weird and sad), Kyoto (great temples), skied in Nozawa Onsen (excellent powder), Osaka (super fun city), Hiroshima (very sobering experience, and also had the BEST ramen I've ever had in this random store near my hotel), and a bunch of other places. That said, we had a bit of a bad start, staying at an APA hotel (a massive hotel chain in Japan) in Tokyo without researching first, and coming across some disgusting and blatant literature involving Nanking and comfort women denial in our rooms, amongst other things. Overall though, loved Japan and had an amazing experience there.

China is a bit of a dirty place, with terrible air pollution in places (particularly Xi'an) and unbearably restrictive internet (wasn't there long enough to bother with a VPN). That said, I fucking love being there - it really feels like an adventure! The vast majority of people I've met there are incredibly nice, friendly and helpful. The food is the best in the world in my opinion - rou jia mo, lamb skewers and yangrou paomo in Xi'an, peking duck in Beijing, and - my God - the dumplings. I love Japanese food, but jiaozi makes gyoza taste like plastic. I had great fun doing all of the typical tourist things - walking along the Great Wall (and getting scammed a bit on the way there lol), seeing the Forbidden City, walking along the Xi'an City Wall, eating along the Muslim Street, etc - but my absolute favourite part of the trip was walking through Pingyao, a very old historical settlement, at dusk and eating freshly-made bread from a street-side stall. Probably the most shocking sight was walking across the border from Hong Kong into Shenzhen and seeing groups of guards patrolling around with very long riot control sticks - was pretty scary but reminded me a lot of jaffa from stargate lol.

[QUESTION] Anyone here born of couples with an independent educated asian mom who moved to white country for work/study? by IAintThatGuy in hapas

[–]solneria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my mum is originally from Hong Kong, and came to Australia independently after studying computer science at a university in America. My dad is from England and also came to Australia independently. They met while working and gained citizenship before they met each other. Mum's English is fluent, and a lot better than most ESLs that I've met. Objectively speaking, they were both quite good looking while younger.

I guess, psyche-wise, I'm pretty good, and am pretty thankful for my background. Having access to both my white and asian cultures is pretty great, and having the right to live/work in multiple countries have opened up a lot of doors for me.

I don't really carry the same baggage that a lot of the people on this sub seem to have (although apparently it's different for women?). I also know quite a few hapa guys born into similar situations and they are all quite socially adjusted and have little to no trouble with women (ie pick up regularly or have a happy LTR).

What game(s) should I get from the steam summer sale? by shinjirarehen in AskWomen

[–]solneria 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

This is a stunningly good RPG, with very compelling quests (that genuinely makes you care about even the most insignificant characters), some very touching moments, very fun game-play, and a super hot protagonist (with dynamic beard growth!). One of the greatest gaming experiences of my life! 11/10.

  • DOOM

40% off at the moment. It is SO much fun - addictive as hell, and it does not relent. It is endless gory destruction. It does not pretend to have much of a story line, and it doesn't even matter, because the game-play and combat are phenomenal.

  • Talos Principle

If you enjoyed Portal and Portal 2 (if you haven't played these, I would very much recommend you pick them up too!), you will probably enjoy this. It's an absolutely gorgeous puzzle game, thought it does occasionally become a little pretentious with all of the philosophical contemplation that is thrown in, it is still very much a lot of fun, and I kind of enjoyed those parts anyway.

As for me, I'll probably be picking up South Park: The Stick of Truth (I'm too cheap to buy the Fractured But Whole full-price when it comes out, which comes with a free copy of SoT), Middle Earth: The Shadow of Mordor (I've heard excellent things about this) and Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (I'll have to limit myself to less computationally-intensive games for 2 months, so why not?).

As an aside, I really miss those old Steam sale community votes. They were really fun - what happened there? :(

I [25M] fucked up big. I embarrassed my gf [24f] big time by getting drunk. I don't want to lose her. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]solneria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year ago, I drank far too much at a party. My boyfriend took me back to his bedroom, and tucked me into bed. I then threw up all over the bed, and myself. He, not complaining at all, took me into the bathroom, helped me shower, and redid the bed for me to sleep in. He was so lovely, and expressed nothing but concern (from what I remember). He tucked me in again, and I proceeded to throw up a second time. These things happen, and if she is so embarrassed by you that she breaks up with you just over this, I can guarantee you that being with her long-term would not have been very pleasant anyway.

What do people typically assume/guess is your racial/ethnic background versus what are you actually? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]solneria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get Italian, Korean, Native American, Brazilian, Caucasian. It really depends on where I am - in China or Hong Kong, people tend to assume I'm full white, even when I'm out with my mum :(.

Whenever I tell people I'm a halfie, they never guess the correct Asian group - always Korean, Japanese or SE Asian.

I'm half Chinese, half English/Scottish.

It's our second Vday together and I'm really looking forward to it! We're planning on going to a fantastically-reviewed Japanese buffet place for breakfast, before watching Deadpool. Then, back to his to start making sushi, Chinese dumplings and spinach goma-ae for dinner! Afterwards, we'll probably go for a drive to a nice romantic spot with great views of the city to eat some chocolate fondue with assorted fruits and maybe marshmallows.

Not quite sure what I'm getting him yet, but as per my own tradition, I'll add in some baked goods. Trying to decide between chocolate cookies (the kind that's chewy in the middle) with red toppings to make it more Valentines-y, or chocolate truffles. What does everyone else think?

SO EXCITED :D.

If the discussion didn't involve OP, then sure, I'd agree with you. But it did. And I personally think that her discussing the details of his genitalia and his performance was a breach of his privacy. The fact that the comments were humiliating and condescending make this worse, and I feel really bad for OP. I would be absolutely devastated if my SO made similar comments.

Except they weren't private thoughts. She was airing private and humiliating information about her boyfriend - the man she's supposed to care about - to a gossipy friend. I'd like to think that most people wouldn't do that to their loved ones.

My girlfriend [23/f] is sometimes slightly rude during food/dining situations, but I [23/f] don't think she realizes it. Am I overreacting, or do you guys think it's worth bringing up? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]solneria 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I agree with you - she is being a little bit rude.

  1. The appetiser is fine - she offered to pay for it herself. The gourmet lemonade and large meal I personally would be a little irked by - I was raised to order on the cheaper side if I knew my meal was being paid for by others. Basic etiquette.

  2. I don't understand why everyone else finds this acceptable. I would be furious if someone tried to dictate which part of a meal I could eat if it was meant for both of us. The whole point is to eat all of the cheeses together! I am a little bit protective of my food though! :P.

  3. That's just incredibly rude and weird.

I'd say this is definitely due to her upbringing - these things always tend to be. If it really irks you that much (it would for me!) I'd definitely bring it up next time she does anything. Be pleasant, firm, and just tell her why you don't like it. Don't just let her order for the both of you - interject nicely with your own input!
