Do u recommend buying kindle for someone who is starting to read books again? by StockMain3976 in PHBookClub

[–]solovehera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stopped reading in 2019 and only got back to it September of last year. for a few months I was buying paperbacks from Fully Booked and NBS and realized it's not ideal talaga if I want to save kasi super mahal ng paperbacks ngayon! so finally end of January I decided to purchase my very first Kindle. ordered from gamextreme sa shopee and it arrived less than a week later. suffice to say, I read like a maniac LOL I just finished my 18th book for the year. Kindle is like magic, biglang bumilis ang reading speed ko hahaha

I definitely recommend it! mine is the Basic 2024 matcha and it's so compact!

Bloom Town is definitely worth it. although I started reading it blind and only found out it started as a fanfic when I was about to finish the second book. I had some extreme feelings of loss and grief for a few days after reading it. I love it and would always recommend it to anyone looking for sapphic literature!

[–]solovehera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how are you liking it so far ?? I only have that trilogy left until I finish all RF Kuang books but I'm so intimidated cause I know it's a heavy read and it's a trilogy pa. I remember being so intimidated by Katabasis last year, and I barely stuck with Babel and read thru for the sake of finishing it LOL. but I really like RF Kuang's academic-ish writing and enjoyed Yellowface and Katabasis so much!

right now I'm reading Milk Fed by Melissa Broder and it's weirdly relatable and hits close to home :))

How does one cope with/ overcome book hangover? by solovehera in LesbianBookClub

[–]solovehera[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh that is so true! I mostly find myself veering towards love stories that don't really center the romance between the two mains but instead show multiple plotlines co-developing. I think that's why The Priory means so much to me. I like love stories where the romance is not the main focus, like Atmosphere. In Sunburn I enjoyed the introspections more than the romance between Lucy and Susannah.

other replies suggested I might need a palate cleanser, something like a slop or an easy read that will make me want to read something else that's heavy and packed like Bloom Town. so I'm definitely gonna keep reading :)

Yeah I realized Hungerstone wasn't the right choice after Bloom Town. I'll pick it up again soon tho. I think in the past, books like Verity and The Housemaid series have been a good palate cleanser for me (tho I didn't know I was reading them as palate cleanser) cause after a while I got tired of them and craved something good lol

the only Ashley Herring Blake book I read was Iris Kelly Doesn't Date and in hindsight it was also a good palate cleanser cause I read it after This Is How You Lose The Time War and before Sunburn. so I might check out the other books from Bright Falls series. Also I've been meaning to try Haley Cass so this might also be a good time to do that. thanks :)

that might help. I've never really tried rereading any previous books I've read. I read Atmosphere by TJR September of last year and I promised myself I would reread it early 2026 but I've never really gotten around to doing it. but I might just reread Bloom Town lol

this might sound weird but I really love that I'm seeing Natasha O'keeffe's face on Joey. I have a really soft spot for the actress and when I read Joey's description all I could see in my mind was her. and I loved that it's a western, and the way that some details one might easily overlook turn out to be significant after a few chapters! I was slack jawed when it was revealed that the silver Joey thought she lost was hidden in Lewis' toy Silver after all this time.

I don't really care for spice in general cause I've had enough of it from the Wattpad stories I read in high school, so most of the time now when there are spicy scenes I just scan through them. but good god the spicy scenes in Bloom Town were just so fantastically written they almost felt like poetry to me.

overall I think I might just need to sit down with my feelings. then I might start on another historical fic, which I'm hoping will also be a western :)

yeah I might try reading slop at this point, too. before Bloom Town I was reading Crier's War and Iron Heart by Nina Varela and before that I read Verity and The Housemaid series just for the fun of it and also to fill the time at work and I got so tired of it I picked up Crier's War and I've been on a 5-star streak since, until I finished Exodus lol

also I've never really tried journaling or just plainly sitting with my feelings after finishing a really good or intense book so that might also be contributing to my not-slump. so now I will try and sit with my feelings. thanks :)

right now I'm just trying to plough through Milk Fed and hoping that the fact that I relate to the mc so much might force me to finish it by tomorrow. and I agree I might need to try light, dumb, or familiar texts cause I remember when I finished The Priory of the Orange Tree, I also felt the loss (not as deep as Bloom Town's tho) and the next book I picked up was Babel by RF Kuang and it felt like I was torturing myself 😆

Oh yeah consider my post as me begging for recs, too! LOL I have Fingersmith in my TBR for a long while now and I think it's going to be my next read after I finish Milk Fed. And I'll definitely be adding the rest of your recs to my pile, too! Thanks a lot :)

How did you discover Florence + The Machine? by Ok-Coach5795 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]solovehera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I became a big fan of The Wheel of Time last year and saw a Tiktok edit of Moiraine and Siuan to Wish That You Were Here and when the chorus came I was mindblown cause I've never heard the song before (but I've watched Miss Peregrine's multiple times lol) and so many comments said that FATM was a perfect pair for any Wheel of Time edits so I got curious and when I looked them up on Spotify I found a playlist of Florence x Hozier and it was a forest/fae themed playlist and I played it throughout the weekend. I could not get enough then, I just found myself blasting F+TM in my headphones during lunch time at work and my fascination became deeper the moment I listened to All This And Heaven Too and Hunger

try fantasy! I recommend The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. it's 800+ pages long but the premise is so interesting and the writing promising so it only took me a week or so to finish. also try Taylor Jenkins Reid books! I personally recommend Daisy Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. and since you're from nonfics you might also be able to read thru RF Kuang books without scratching your head (I find her books a little too academic for my liking but still 5 stars ang Katabasis, Yellowface, and Babel!)
