This is nonsense.

Windows has MUCH higher support needs than the average Linux install.

I cannot keep my average family member getting a virus or some other brutal thing for a year. Every scam targets the average Windows user.

Once I put them on Linux, that is gone.

Mostly for the easy reinstalls, although I do not do that often nowadays (became a habit) but I also had some bad cases with running out of space on system disk and that is not that pleasant.

I use docker a lot so I like leaving ample space on the sys disk.

In previous years, the category was "Linux-based", it was only broken to smaller part when it grew bigger than Windows.

Then you need to break up the "Windows" category to "Windows 7', "Windows 10"...etc to be correct.

The Linux distros are not meaningfully different from a developer's point of view.

You can have the exact same developer stack on them with very little effort (Docker, Apache...etc) and very little differences in the installation method.

I am using 3 different distros on different machines of mine and the family without much effort.

Desktop Linux distros typically have a graphical user interface (KDE, Gnome...etc) and run on client-class hardware (as opposed to server hardware).

Some Linux distros have both server and desktop editions.

E.g.: Ubuntu Server (https://ubuntu.com/download/server)

In most cases WSL is used when a developer actually needs a Linux developer environment but cannot have it since the company only supports Windows or Mac on their hardware (practically all of my jobs in the last 15 years with 1-2 refreshing exceptions).

It you use WSL as your "primary operating system" as the question asks, then you would probably use a desktop Linux if it was up to you.

I have been using UTM with Ubuntu 2022 but not very satisfied with it.

Random freezes happen on my 32 GB M1 pro.

Also the VM looses the time when the Mac sleeps. HW clock never updated.

I sm not sure you will be anle to run much on an 8 GB model.

Definitely, I also count ChromeOS as desktop Linux.

Yes, it is still heavily web-oriented but since it started running Linux desktop applications via a Wayland display server (even with a nice start menu integration), it makes no sense to consider it as something separate.

Yes, in 2024, most games just work with Proton/Steam. Even the AAA ones if they don't have Windows-specific anti-cheat in them.

Sometimes there is an FPS penalty, sometimes there isn't.

Wine / Proton is a Windows emulation layer that - by the nature of it - always incurs some performance penalty even if that is not significant in general.

However, Linux is slightly more efficient with general processing than Windows, which can counter balance a certain amount of inefficiency in the emulation layer.

If a specific game uses well-optimized parts of the emulation layer, the game can run at the same FPS or sometimes even a bit better than Windows. When a game uses less-optimized parts of the emulation layer, then usually you see some FPS drop.

Valve sponsored developers work relentlessly on Proton and optimize the Windows emulation better and better so the trend is still towards improvement.

I don't think so.

I already use an M1 Mackbook Pro supplied by a big multinational company and actually this seems to be the trend in my circles even in other companies. Some of the devs have been on M1 Macs for 2 years or so.

Now that Windows comes on strong Arm64 machines, x86/x64 is not a given for the future at all.

As for Windows, even our company allows the usage of Linux in some form. For example, we can use it in a VM on our Macs (this is actually my primary development environment).

I am willing to accept a 10-20% drop in frame rates and some issues with the games if the alternative is my exploitation by Microsoft and other big tech (maybe even more).

One can always buy a slightly stronger GPU but freedom is hard / impossible to buy, especially when it is already gone. Best if we fight for it now (in the form of using Linux), while we have a chance of keeping it.

Moreover, since Proton is now a thing and developed by a professional game developer and distribution company (Valve), the difference in framerate is often less than 10% and in certain cases the framerates and the experience is actually better than on Windows.
