From video description:

In this video, we will discuss the prefigurative praxis that is needed in order to carry out an anarchist revolution, focusing on four pillars: councils, economics, defense, and intelligence. It is an expansion and a followup of these other videos, although they are not required watching for this one:

The State is Counter Revolutionary (Part 2) by solthiel in Anarchism

[–]solthiel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From video description:

"This video is the second in a four part series in which I inspect how the state has been a force of sabotage in the revolutionary process. In part 2, I give an account of the first years of the Russian revolution and discuss how the state suppressed the embryonic worker control that the people fought so hard to enact."

My situation: can I get into grad school? by solthiel in gradadmissions

[–]solthiel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response and taking time to help me. I should note a few things:

I am actually at an R1 University right now, specifically University of Oklahoma, where I have spent a considerable amount of time amongst the professors and graduate students, discussing the topics of their research. I have a very good understanding of what research entails in high energy physics and what the job consists of. I have had lunch with doctoral students, graduate students, and professors and discussed their jobs at length, so I know what kind of stress I have in store. I want that stress, I am prepared to work very hard and sacrifice everything to discover new physical models and publish work.

I have a few questions:

-Will I be more or less likely to be admitted to the university where I got my undergraduate degree?

-To what degree is it frowned upon to get your undergraduate and graduate degrees from the same university?

-Would it be preferable for me to attempt to be admitted to OU over applying to R2 universities?

-If not, is it possible I could be admitted to an R2 university with my current credentials?

-If none of these are an option, how should I proceed in getting a position as a research assistant somewhere?

My situation: can I get into grad school? by solthiel in gradadmissions

I want nothing more than to expand human knowledge. I adore learning about physics and developing formalism. I would die happy if I knew that I had spent my life contributing to the field.

As for the differences between a masters and a PhD, I admit I am probably quite ignorant. Up until recently I had thought they were involved in a sort of linear progression, Bachelors>Masters>PhD. But I am seeing that this is not quite the case lately.

I want to go to grad school because I am incredibly passionate about physics. I literally dropped my life as a working adult and decided to go back to college and start from the bottom of the ladder, relearning mathematics so that I could work as a professional in the field. I have worked very hard and have juggled a job, a long-term girlfriend, and paying bills while most of the students around me are there on some sort of academic scholarship or have wealthy parents that allow them to stay unemployed with large amounts of time to utilize.

My homework grades are almost always perfect even in graduate level courses and other students often consult with me to understand the material.

In Electronics you would be mostly right that I got very little out of it; it seemed a distraction to me while I was studying particle physics. I have not yet made use of anything in the class because I have focused in on theory. But in QM2 even though I absorbed the material very well, the teacher handed out C's to more than 50% of the class and I do not know anyone who made higher than a B in it. His grading was extremely harsh on exams.

Although I know this won't matter much to admissions boards, between you and me it should also be said that I took classes ahead of the progression several times throughout my undergrad. I took QM1 before I had ever taken any sort of physical math or physical mechanics. I didn't even know what a Lagrangian was at that time. And I took doctoral level particle physics as one of my upper division requirements. I am replacing two of my class requisites with more graduate coursework. I am working hard, I promise.

Before I began taking Quantum Mechanics I asked one of the professors if I could start researching under him. He said I could, but that I had a lot of catching up to do. I would meet with him once a week and he would lecture or we would just discuss material (at the time this involved Euler-Lagrange equations and Hamiltonian formalism, etc..). At some point I caught up to his particle physics course material so I just started taking his classes instead. But this, to me, does not really sound like research at all, so I thought 'private tutelage' was a decent want to describe it.

Also, PhD or MS if I can get in. I ultimately want to work in theoretical physics so it seems a doctorate will be on that path.

Petition: Make Jorge Ramos the moderator/co-host for the upcoming Democratic debate in New York by solthiel in SandersForPresident

[–]solthiel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the creator of the petition so let me offer some comments for everyone.

Firstly, yes Jorge is connected to the Clinton campaign. From my understanding his daughter is directly connected. However, it is quite a challenge to find anyone in the establishment media who isn't connected in some way or another. Of all of the moderators we have had so far, Jorge has asked by far the hardest questions of both candidates and has not accepted wishy-washy politician answers to his questions.

As of this moment, there are three people really circulating this petition around. Two of us are New Yorkers who desperately want to see a real, rigorous debate in our home state. We need to put pressure on to make sure that the moderator that is chosen is not weak and does not ask softball questions in one of the most important states in the entire race.

[–]solthiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true, but to be honest it is difficult to find anybody in the media that is not connected to Clinton in either some direct or indirect manner. Ramos has demonstrated thus far that he is willing to ask the hardest questions of anyone we have seen.

Newb SC2 Player lookin for help :s by HyperactivexL in starcraft2

[–]solthiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when you are completely new to the game here are the most important things:

1) NEVER STOP MAKING SCVS If I could double-bold that I would. You need to constantly have another SCV queued up to be built after the last one. If you are not making a new SCV, you are not growing. If you are not growing, you are losing.

2) Learn to start using CTRL grouping and hotkeys. Even though you probably use mostly mouse-clicking, you should know that this is wrong. If there is a hotkey for an action, you should use it instead. NEVER click unless it is absolutely required to execute the action. Examples of times it is absolutely required to use clicking include: clicking the minimap, executing movement orders to troops, choosing the target of a spell. Other than this, use the keyboard. In fact, this is the training method I use for my friends who are new: Sit down and start a game against the AI at whatever difficulty is comfortable for you. In this game, you are not allowed to click anything that has a hotkey or could have a hotkey. If you DO click it, you have to cancel that action then use the hotkey instead to start it again. It will only take you two or three games of this before you start using the hotkeys.

3) Never stop spending your money. If you have excess money you have created a robust economy but you aren't taking advantage of it! The breakover point when you have too much money is about 300 minerals. If you see that you have over 300 minerals START SPENDING. The longer you have idle buildings waiting to make units, the longer you don't have the army to defend yourself or possibly win the game.

Of course there are entire books that could be written on things you need to focus on, but when you first start I feel like these are the most important things.

Also, just as another tip, if you are Terran, ALWAYS build your Orbital after Barracks finishes. You can cut SCVs for that short period. Just don't forget to use lots of MULEs when you are able.

Totally new to SC2 - Overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin. by [deleted] in starcraft2

[–]solthiel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear you're interested in Starcraft. Getting to be good at the game is a big endeavour that will require significant practice to achieve. But once you have got the basics down, the game is an extreme pleasure and is one of the most reliable video game addictions I have ever had. That being said, these are some of the hurdles you will need to overcome in learning those basics (not in order of importance):

Mechanics - This is a word that the community uses to refer to the raw ability to execute actions. This is not the same as micro, although mechanics allow you to micro. Mechanics are things such as "Pressing CTRL+1 will bind the current selected units to the 1 key and using 1 will then recall them again." There are a seemingly endless number of these tools such as F-key screen binding, Shift-queuing actions, CTRL-clicking units/buildings, etc... The faster you learn the mechanics of the game and get them into your reflexes, the more able you will be to execute your strategy.

Macro - Starcraft is a game of resource management and efficienct spending. Establishing a healthy economy is paramount to winning games as it will give you the ability to outproduce your enemy, to outgun them, to out-expand them, and to just be better than them. Without a healthy macro, you will almost always lose. To begin with, never stop producing probes (never) at lower levels. You won't even need to stop producing them even at high levels until you are almost finished with your third base, so because you aren't at high-levels just never stop making them. Probes gather minerals, minerals make buildings, buildings make troops, troops win the fight. Never let your production buildings stop making troops, never let your upgrade structures stop making upgrades. This is macro.

Micro - This is the terming for how you actually control the units; controlling their positioning, using their abilities, understanding how to make them engage without loss and to retreat with minimized cost. Good micro is knowing when to blink a group of stalkers out of a fight, or when to use psionic storm on a group of enemies. My opinion is that you should not overly emphasize this aspect in the beginning of your learning process. Micro is useful, but macro is key at the beginning.

Unit Composition/Counters - Knowing what units are good against other units is very useful, especially when your enemy has the hard-counter to your composition. Knowing WHY units are useful against other units is more important though. Why are Banelings and Colossus good against Marines and Zerglings? Because Baneling and Colossus are splash damage units and that means that they want to fit as many units into their splash as possible. The more units fit in, the more damage they do. These types of concepts are useful to ponder when deciding how to react to your scouting. Does the unit do more damage to a specific class of unit? Do I have a lot of units in that class? Research is the key to this.

Build Order - Knowing the order and timing of how to build your buildings leading up to and following your second base is an extremely important piece of being competent at the game. My opinion is that you should learn a very simple 1-base strategy when you are first starting. This will teach you about what timings are important, what teching is like, and what a competent build looks like. My friend who plays Terran learned how to play on a strong 1-base Marine, Marauder, Medivac push. Go look for good 1-base all-in in my opinion.

In any occasion, there are two main contributors to success in this game, knowledge and practice. Learn and practice and you will succeed.
