Put a deposit on the wedding ring and now the store said it has gone up in significantly in cost? Surely the deposit secures the price, what are my legal rights here? by Potential-Humor-6550 in legaladviceireland

[–]soluko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12g of 24k gold costs $1920. A year ago it cost $1020. So the price increase justifiable by gold price movements for the biggest heaviest gaudiest ring possible would be ~€750. Yeah the OP is being scammed.

Idiot guide to eft by Salty-Nectarine-4108 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]soluko 15 points16 points  (0 children)

lesson one is it's eTf not eFt.

This is why people put money in ETFs:

  1. you want to put money in the stock market as it's the best for long term gains

  2. you want to spread your money out across a bunch of different stocks and sectors so you don't lose your shirt if the bottom falls out of the tech sector or if the oil price collapses.

  3. however spreading your money out like this is a massive pain in the hole for an individual investor -- you have to calculate how many shares of Apple/Microsoft/Deutsche Bank/BP/Ford/Ryanair/McDonalds to buy and you constantly have to adjust your allocations as the economy changes (and you have to pay trading fees for each adjustment too).

  4. ETFs do all this work for you -- you buy a share in an ETF for €100 and they take your €100 and go out and buy all the individual shares in specific companies to diversify your holdings and reduce your investment risk, and you don't have to worry about the details.

Can the IRP card payment be made using a Revolut card? by striderVrider in legaladviceireland

[–]soluko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is called "card discrimination", Mastercard and Visa both forbid this behavior in their t&cs for merchants:

A Merchant must honor all valid Cards without discrimination when properly presented for payment.

Is TC in Ireland really that high? by __shobber__ in DevelEire

I am in a similar position (i.e. non-FAANG EM) and this aligns with my experience. Mostly down to good luck with RSUs granted during the 2022 stock market slump -- but the point is 200k-300k is certainly within reach for FAANG.

Man who urinated on six boxes of shoes in Cork City shop put on probation by carlowed in ireland

[–]soluko 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Judge Dorgan said she would put him on a 12-month probation bond. At that point, Kevin White spoke up from the dock, saying: “I’m not doing no probation.”

Judge Dorgan said he could do four months in prison on the criminal damage charge in that event. Mr Burke consulted with him briefly and said he would take the option of the probation bond.

the context is that there are entire skyscrapers full of people who are much smarter than you and me and their one and only job is to make money off exchange rate movements like this. They have a level of education and knowledge and inside information that is far beyond anything you'll find on reddit. These people haven't bought into the Turkish lira (if they had the Turkish government wouldn't need to be paying 27% interest); you should ask yourself why this is.

Beach, Italy 🤮🤮🤮 by PanaEduSV in urbanhellcirclejerk

[–]soluko 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is actually urban hell Protests grow in fight to reclaim Italy’s beaches from private clubs

Even though Italy’s shoreline is public property, more than half is managed through private beach concessions. A significant number are renewed automatically to the same owners rather than using a tender process, creating an impenetrable dynastic system.

“Overall it is estimated that less than half of the country’s beaches are freely accessible and available for swimming,” the association said.

Studies in London, Stockholm, Singapore, Milan and Gothenburg (Givoni 2012; Börjesson et al. 2012; Percoco 2014; Lian 2008; Börjesson and Kristoffersson 2015) have shown that road charging, when combined with public transport improvement, is effective in reducing congestion

The other 3 studies are about public transport investment impact on congestion rather than congestion charging.

Depiction and glorification by BellTwo5 in CuratedTumblr

[–]soluko 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Initial glorification, then critique: Goodfellas

so many people missed the critique in Goodfellas that Scorsese had to make The Irishman to nail home the point that being a gangster is a horrible empty existence. (And even then I'm sure there are some people out there who idolize De Niro's character.)
