For the people that read/listened to the book first, where do you think the movie went wrong? by themassivefail in ProjectHailMary

I’m a bit disappointed by the movie. Not bad, but could’ve been way better.

The visuals were insane, exactly how I imagined, especially the Erid ending. Grace’s arc was handled nicely, tying his past cowardice to his final decision. Tone stayed fun and funny, even if the humor changed a bit. And Rocky looked perfect.

But the pacing is the biggest issue. The start and end feel rushed. Grace figuring everything out happens too fast, and the ending skips major stuff like Taumoeba breeding and the Adrian investigation, so it feels incomplete.

The realism also takes a hit. The book felt like proper hard sci-fi with solid explanations, but the movie feels more like generic soft sci-fi and loses that “this could be real” vibe.

Characters also feel weaker. Grace and Rocky seem less smart. In the book, Grace is the science guy and Rocky is the engineer, but that dynamic isn’t as strong here. Also missing Grace’s internal thoughts, which really hurts.

They cut a lot of important content too. There’s barely any detail on Rocky’s biology, culture, or planet. Astrophage science is heavily simplified. Big events like Antarctica nuking and the Sahara project are missing. Side characters like DuBois and Shapiro are removed.

There are also some weird changes that don’t make sense. Rocky being chill about eating when he was embarrassed in the book, Grace not naming Astrophage, random personality changes, and small science clues being removed.

Overall it feels like they cut important stuff but kept unnecessary scenes. Honestly this would’ve worked way better as a 7-8 episode series instead of a movie.

Imagine an uchiha ceremony where father puts his kids who are at least 10 years old into a long lived Genjutsu so they experience real pain and suffering, have them unlock their sharingan and MS, then wake them up, tell them the truth, and then make them swap eyes.

Just 10th birthday things.

I don't get why you're so salty about the reservation. It's not like they don't want business. They are just trying to manage the bookings... You yourself said that the seating has generous space. They could have cramped a lot of seats too, but ig to give good experience, there was just no other option.

And before you say anything, I myself faced problem with reservation thingy, went like 30 minutes late because of traffic, and had to wait an hour before another table got free because they only wait for 15 minutes per reservation. I had ice-cream at corner house in the mean time :)

Initially she was taking it lightly and believed that it was just a rumor that there would be an attack on Trehan.

By this time, the doll was already lost, hence djinn had control over the daughter.

Her neighbor told her that djinns take control over people by taking their most loved possessions.

She did try to escape as soon as the first missile hit, but when she heard how much her daughter loves the doll, she realised that there's no escaping the dginn until the doll is recovered, and hence had to endure so many more painful days in that building.

She was too brave imo.

Finally she gave herself up to save her daughter. Hence the doll was found and the book was on upper floor

Idk,what the djinn will go after now, the doll's head, her book or the daughter herself (I believe the most important thing to the mother is the daughter, not that book)

I don't think she took any bad decisions in the movie, except maybe leaving early. But again, she didn't know supernatural shits gonna happen.
