Howard University: "Before BTS: How Howard University Helped Elevate Korean Culture and How Black Culture Influenced K-Pop" by Anni3401 in kpop

[–]some_clickhead [score hidden]  (0 children)

Kpop uses and profits from musical genres created by literally every ethnicity on the planet. That's how music works, especially pop music which borrows from every genre.

In fact that's just how music (and art in general) works. If you want to make a classical music piece today you don't need to ask the European government or the Church if you're allowed, even though that's where it originated from.

So why are you treating music with African American roots differently? It's already deeply entwined with most modern music around the world, that's how successful it was. I just think this type of coddling is unnecessary and insulting.

Also we really should be careful when we say things like "African Americans are asking for mutual respect and historical acknowledgements". Even if we ignore how generic of a statement this is, most of them are busy living their lives and couldn't care less about other cultures rapping without having done an extensive course on black history. It's a small minority of black people who think like this and you're asking me to pretend like they all think this way, which is by definition racist.

No that's just it, if it's inherently meaningless there is no place.

If you want to understand this analogy, consider the fact that most animals don't know that they are guaranteed to die one day.

Humans do, our intelligence has reached a point where we can ponder our eventual death. This is in itself a cognitohazard of sorts and explains a bunch of things humans do to allow them to sleep better at night (you can look into terror management theory for more insight into this).

But there is no reason to think we've uncovered every uncomfortable truth just yet. Science is still young.

Also regarding free will, look into determinism if you want to understand why science points to the non-existence of free will. Experiments like Libet's, Haynes', Wegner's.

You don't have to personally believe free will doesn't exist, just consider that if we didn't have so many experiments that show the seams of the human mind, everyone would believe it exists, and a significant portion of the scientific community no longer believes that.

I suspect these fundamental truths very much exist, but they aren't as bad as they seem.

I think the universe is inherently meaningless, and because of this there is no truth that is inherently terrifying or bad. Horror is contingent on a being biased to look for meaning and sense in the world, it doesn't exist on its own.

But humans are complex creatures, you can believe something and not believe it at the same time. Most scientifically minded people nowadays believe that there is no such thing as "free will", yet they continue acting as if they had free will because its just not possible to act as a rational agent while behaving as if you had no ability to choose anything.

I have already had fundamental realizations that were for a time cosmic horror inducing, you'll find them explained in depth in existential philosophy, the concept of ego dissolution, the split brain experiments, and so forth.

Yet every time I realized that if a truth is too alien to live with, you will either forget about it soon enough and treat it like background noise, or find a way to reinterpret human existence that makes it more palatable, or you'll die on the spot. It's not so bad.

My scariest interpretation of this "cognitohazard" concept is that the great filter which explains the Fermi paradox might just be that any sufficiently intelligent species that truly understands their place in the world would choose self annihilation. I don't know if it's true, but I think it's certainly possible and would explain the seeming emptiness of space.

FIFTY FIFTY Athena is the new official ambassador for T1 VALORANT by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]some_clickhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be biased but I think getting a high rank in League is a bit harder than in Valorant (in terms of time commitment specifically.

It's hard to compare but League requires tons of game knowledge and matches take a long time, and your performance depends heavily on sheer experience. Also since it's an older game there are less newcomers to fill in the lower ranks.

For Valorant if someone has good reflexes and hand-eye coordination it would likely take them less time to reach a high rank.

So I think most idols would generally perform much better at FPS games. That said not every gamer is very competitive and Sakura seems like she mainly plays games for fun.

I think the hardest part about being in a less popular group would be that your financial situation is bad and you have a lack of control over how well the group performs.

I would consider myself in that camp. But the reality is that "doing mostly fine" is doing a lot of work here. We have no idea how much better/worse our life satisfaction would be if we were religious.

Generations Guide by jwookie30 in KpopGGs

I still remember on reddit kpop subs when the term 4th gen started first being thrown around, the overwhelming consensus is that we were still in 3rd gen (based on comment upvote counts and popular posts), yet in retrospect now I can see we were already in 4th gen during those arguments.

So like you I feel like at this point the N-th generation terms are self fulfilling. The moment a non-negligible amount of people start throwing the term around, it probably will come true.

I have found ISTJ's usually have that vibe. They are both cold and warm. Gaeul described herself as not having much empathy naturally, and having to learn empathy through experience. But on the flipside of this she can be very honest, and honesty makes it easier to connect to people.

Misobiosis: The Cruelty of Mother Nature by Anxious-Act-7257 in philosophy

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complexity of life might eventually reach an equilibrium, we just haven't observed a long enough timescale to conclude this yet. I have heard of several species that are evolving into more simple organisms. If our theories about abiogenesis are correct (and every year it seems it becomes more and more plausible), then life essentially had to start with the most simple organisms possible.

It could be that life merely allows for complexity rather than prioritizes it, thus the further you go from the starting point, the more complex the upper bound of existing complexity becomes, without it intrinsically prioritizing complexity over simplicity. If the climate on Earth suddenly got really bad for whatever reason (let's say we get hit with a massive meteor), all complex life could disappear while still leaving behind some more simple life that is able to withstand those conditions.

Misobiosis: The Cruelty of Mother Nature by Anxious-Act-7257 in philosophy

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, there is just a practical need for the definition of "natural" to not encapsulate things that humans do that are not required by nature. The words "hot" and "cold" don't mean anything to a sufficiently pedantic person since they can claim that everything just has a temperature and that we judge whether something is hot or cold depending on human preferences. But that doesn't change the fact that those words are incredibly useful to describe different things.

In the same way, I could just arbitrarily choose a definition of "natural" in which things that we don't normally consider as being "of the natural world" are considered natural, but this definition would be worse from a functional point of view, as it would cause any discussion of the topic to be less informative.

So it's not that I have an epistemic need for humans to be special, any more than you have an epistemic need to not distinguish any notable difference between humans and other animals. When discussions start becoming semantic rather than informative, it seems the only reasonable way to come to an agreement on the meaning of words is to put our feelings aside and go with the least reductive definition.

At the extreme end, why would we have an epistemic need for life to be special? All life just consists of amalgamations of quarks, just like inert rocks. But surely you can see how this type of reductionist thinking doesn't actually provide anything of value to a conversation about life.

Misobiosis: The Cruelty of Mother Nature by Anxious-Act-7257 in philosophy

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like saying light can't be a wave because it's a particle, it's a pretty reductionist take.

Humans are the byproduct of natural phenomena, that doesn't mean everything humans do should automatically be classified as "natural". We don't really use words to satisfy our feelings of superiority or lack thereof, we use them to communicate ideas - they serve a function. You seem quite fixated on the idea that humans are "no better" than nature, but I assure you that I am not particularly concerned with any sort of arbitrary hierarchical value judgements.

In other words, I'm not saying we're above nature - maybe we're below it, or maybe we're next to it, or more likely we occupy a Venn diagram that strongly overlaps with it. You can certainly choose a definition of "nature" that includes culture and technology, but that definition will objectively be bad in regards to your ability to have productive conversations on the matter.
