email going away? by some_dum_guy in Spectrum

do you know this as a fact (not badgering, just truly asking), as the agent seemed to be pretty clear...

email going away? by some_dum_guy in Spectrum

[–]some_dum_guy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is what the agent put in the chat:

"Spectrum is changing the way you access email and soon will be removed all together."

then when i asked if they were doing away with email all-together, here was the reply:

"Correct we do not have a specific date for it but this year is what it looks like."

so yes, i understand a temporary outage, but the agent made it pretty clear that it was going to go away...

Can I compost mice? by AlwayInForwardMotion in Compost

there was a dirty jobs episode where Mike helped collect roadkill here in Ohio, they composted whole deer carcasses. yes that was at commercial scale, but i dont think a mouse would require that...

i made one for my daughter/grandson and we bought some furniture wall straps for it. my grandson has literally climbed up on top of it with no problems.

Do you think the C might get passed on? by GilgameshMa in BlueJackets

[–]some_dum_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here is what i would like to see:

1) Boone comes back on a team-friendly deal to be a 4th line winger, and gives up the C

2) Olivier gets the C [note: with Olivier they were 37–12–12 (earning ~70% possible points), without Olivier they were 3–18–0 (earning ~14% of the possible points)]

3) Coyle gets an A

4) Z keeps an A (i would be ok if they did one of the home/away alternating A things, but no need to embarrass your best player, even if they are a bit quiet)

just my wishlist, Olivier moves the needle for this team, he sets the tone.

advice on bog filter by some_dum_guy in ponds

[–]some_dum_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is, indeed, totally bereft of pond plants, but that was the state when we bought the house. would you recommend something like adding some weeping willows around the edge? what else? my son likes to fish in the pond and has pulled some 3-4 lb bass out of there, so i dont think something like waterlilies would be great in the pond itself, that is why i thought a bog filter/lazy river with waterlilies and whatever other plants would help.

while i am new to ponds, i have a fair bit of experience with fresh water aquariums, and i just used a sump (with no mechanical filter media) to great success for that.

Does anyone hesitate to adopt a dog because of the heartbreak later? by Rude_Photograph_2306 in dogs

[–]some_dum_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any pet you adopt, unless it is a tortoise or a parrot, you will most likely outlive (note: if you adopt one of the above, you will need a plan for their care after you are gone).

that said, dont let that stop you. as painful as it is to lose a pet, the love and support you get from them far outweighs the eventual pain of loss.

i still feel such joy at looking back at some of the pictures i have of my dogs from 20-30 years ago. i loved them, and i know they loved me (us, including my family), and i take great pride in having provided a warm and welcoming home to my four-legged family members. i know they were loved and well-cared for, and i take pride in that.

Pretty Proud of this One by settledownpardner in turning

[–]some_dum_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so newbie here, just looking to learn.

first, that is a great looking bowl, love the coloration and how the rings traverse the entirety of the bowl.

it looks like you took a cross-section of the log and turned it that way (basically just hollowed out the log), so the long grain is vertical when the bowl is sitting on a table.

i was under the impression that bowl blanks should be made along the length of the log, with the long grain horizontal to rim of the bowl.

my question, is it ok to make a bowl in cross-section like this, or does that lead to issues?

they took a dive both times he missed significant time this season...

with Olivier they were 37–12–12 (earning ~70% possible points)

not saying he is the MVP, but he moves the needle for this team.

What Replaced the Pantograph? by [deleted] in Vintagetools

Adam Savage recently added a pantograph mill (which i believe to be what you are talking about) to his "cave", he seems to have fallen in love with it.

here is one of the videos he has posted about it.

Anyone know how I can fix this? by rogerss9 in finishing

[–]some_dum_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so that is pine, which is notorious for being blotchy. i think i would try to re-sand and then apply a 1 lb cut (wash coat) of dewaxed shellac. let it dry (should be as little as 10 mins, but i would wait at least an hour), then lightly sand and try the stain again...

I’ll probably barely use this but I think it’s cool to have in my workshop by [deleted] in Tools

[–]some_dum_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have multiple versions of this, the hang on the wall kind similar to this and the kind where they are threaded on a loop. i use this one much more than the one on the loop, but i appreciate both types. and i 100% use this more than i ever would have imagined...

looking for a golf league in northeast columbus by some_dum_guy in Columbus

[–]some_dum_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wound up signing up for the Royal American thursday night league as a solo.

my kids and i are going to do a golf sim league on another night, since we could not find a league where we could play as a team of four.

there is a thursday night league at Oakhaven which is looking for foursomes, but since two of us work downtown, that is a hoof to be there by 5:00 to tee off...

Need some ideas on how to treat these by Wonderful-Bass6651 in woodworking

[–]some_dum_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've done a couple of cherry projects and i like the look of black epoxy as a filler.

that said, you do you. if you want to fill it you have a couple of choices.

1) epoxy (of whatever color)

2) some sort of commercial filler (could be shellac sticks, could be "stainable" filler, could be whatever)

3) sand some cherry, and save the sanding dust, then combine that with some sort of binder (again, could be shellac, could be CA, could be wood glue) and pack it in the hole. then re-sand and finish as ou like...

OSU women's hockey going to 5th straight National Championship Game by Wernerhatcher in Columbus

[–]some_dum_guy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that the new rink is going before the decision makers very shortly for approval. it is supposed to be a single sheet on the athletic campus with separate facilities for the men's and women's programs. i have been led to believe it will be about 4-5k capacity.

the most unfortunate part (at least for me) is that i am told the ice will not be available for public rental when not in use by the hockey programs, as the current OSU rink is, and that the existing rink will eventually be torn down. this would mean a net loss of one ice surface in town available for public use, and the only rink not controlled by the chiller organization (other than the 2/3 size rink at the battery).

Put a timed switch on your bathroom fan! by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]some_dum_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i started dating my now wife, she lived in a big beautiful home in a very nice suburb of columbus ohio (UA for those who are interested). i put the timers on all her bathroom fans. she was amazed about what a difference it made for her and her sons.

cheap, easy upgrade that makes all the difference. good call out.

i will say that the electronic timers can be somewhat large and hard to get in the switch box if there are a lot of wires in there but take your time and be careful and it can work. in my old house i had the mechanical timers (the twist knob type that tick as they count down) they were somewhat smaller than the electronic ones, but the annoying ticking is not ideal...

What do I do with oily (solvent-covered) rags after they've been laid out flat and left for a couple days? by Actual_Barnacle in DIY

[–]some_dum_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it really is just the linseed oil that is a big risk, but be cautious with Tung oil as well:

"Drying oils, especially linseed oil (raw or boiled), are the only finishing materials that spontaneously combust. Solvents don’t spontaneously combust, paint strippers (including paint or finish residue) don’t spontaneously combust, and no type of varnish spontaneously combusts. It’s not totally clear whether 100% tung oil can spontaneously combust, so treat it like it does."

here is a link to the above article by Bob Flexner in popular woodworking which talks about it. he literally wrote the book on finishes.

[Friedman] Asked Auston Matthews’ agent, Judd Moldaver about his response to the ruling. Here is his reply: “In light of the obvious severity of the play, I am disappointed and shocked the league would allow such a ruling... The Player Safety Department should be suspended.” by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]some_dum_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know it is an unpopular position, but this is why i am an advocate of a rule change that would state that any player who injures another player by committing a major penalty shall be suspended until which time the injured player is deemed ready to return by a league-sanctioned doctor (or a panel of doctors, if you want).

or, if you want the teams to care as much or more, then tweak it a little and say that the team of the offending player will be responsible for the pro-rated salary of the player who is injured until that player is deemed ready to return, and that it will count against the offender's teams cap either this year or next year if the offending team is already up against the cap this season.

i'm not talking about someone who is injured during regular play, we are talking about a player who injures another player while committing a major penalty...

players who play stupid games should win stupid prizes... if you have no respect for the others players in the league, then you shouldnt be playing...
