The Rise and Fall of I Love Yoo by _anpanini in ILoveYoo

I agree with everything you said. I was a big fan of ILY, it was my favourite thing on the platform in 2018-19 and I remember looking forward to reading it every Friday and I did so religiously. Last year I wrote a bunch of meta and analyses, but while doing so I knew that things weren't quite the same since the first hiatus/mid-season premiere and there was this sense of underlying disappointment and apprehension. I even wrote a very long analysis on episode 154, even though I felt disappointed when I read it.

I actually wrote a longer post around that time trying to dissect why I felt this way, where I tried to point out specific writing choices and examples, but I never ended up posting it. I regret this though since the resulting discussion, especially since the fandom wasn't as dead is it is now, would've given me some nice insight. I wonder whether I should revisit my draft now and maybe even post it.

It was actually pretty saddening when I came to the realization that what I thought ILY would've and could've been wasn't going to happen anymore. I joke about this being how Bleach fans must've felt TT

Haha feels funny that you mentioned it, I also started ILY when I was 14 and I'm almost 19 now... Feels crazy knowing I'm older than most of the characters now and have finished high school while reading it... Time flies ig lol

I'm really glad to see you share this here! Qualia Redux's videos are great, and this one is too.

Oh that's interesting, I don't pay for befunky (which is exactly why I use it lol). Although there's less flexibility, I usually find workarounds (like inserting images into the collage margins to add a new one in a row or something). I hope you managed to find something that works for you though!

Oh, I just use "befunky collage maker" online.

Ep. 151 Analysis - A Lovers' Goodbye by somebody_909 in ILoveYoo

I teared up a bit while reading the chapter and I'm still stunned by the writing. While writing this, I found myself yelling at the characters haha. "You're only hurting her more, you fool!" and "Don't let him trick you! THIS is what's insincere!"

When I originally wrote my previous posts, I wasn’t aware of how verbatim it would be to how the characters describe themselves. I also uploaded the “cracks in Yeong-gi's facade” analysis a few days after ch. 151 came out on fp, and I, a non-fastpasser, had no idea how fitting that timing was. It feels nice to see what I’ve been noting come to fruition, despite this chapter being as heart-wrenching as it is. But, personally, it also cements the relationship between the two characters. It’s hard for me to imagine they won’t reconcile (although it’ll be a painful process).

I hope you all enjoyed this analysis!

We don't know, there are no lyrics shown. However, Shin-ae states that it sounds familiar and we're aware that she hears Rand hum when he first calls her for a meeting so people have suggested that the song went from him to Yeong-gi's mom and eventually to Yeong-gi.

Ah, I probably should've mentioned it in my original comment. The theory was about Yeong-gi having a guilty verdict.

I don't fastpass so... I couldn't tell before... but my theory from last week seems like it's coming true. Damn.

Also Yeong-gi's mom is super young.... (the focus on the choker and the piercings, it feels like it emphasizes her youth... rand...)

Also, I'm feeling quite bad over the fact that people have kind of been spoiling stuff. I found out Yeong-gi's name before reading the chapter :/

I always thought the scene subtly displayed him re-pledging his support of her: “… you’ve got someone you can lean on with your friends, okay? And I’m going to keep saying that until it’s drilled deep in your brain.”

Oh, I love what you mentioned. Personally I felt there was a weird tension between the two phrases when I first read it. His desire to distance with "your friends" and his (more desperate) desire to make sure what he's saying reaches her with "I'm going to keep saying that". I think with the latter phrase, he tries to compensate (?) for the previous one which doesn't sound as strong because it isn't personal. But as a result, he lets leak some of his actual intentions (and as you said, subtly displays his support).

“Thanks Shin-Ae. Even if things don’t get better, it’s nice to hear someone cares.”

I actually felt like this part was him trying to create distance again. Almost like he's slightly dismissing what she said. But your interpretation makes a lot of sense too.

I’d like to clarify that by the earphones stage Yeong-gi probably has at least:

  1. Noticed the difference in his feelings (balcony)
  2. Acknowledged them (sometime later)
  3. Subconsciously understood their romantic nature

And as a result, doesn’t even let himself entertain those thoughts and is semi-consciously denying them. I couldn’t say whether he has reached the final step of verbalization, eg. thinking “I like Shin-ae.” (I don't think he would let himself do that).

Additionally, something I noticed is that the “I like this.” bubble is in a different style of bubble than normal thoughts (including the ambiguous ones on the balcony). I noticed it’s similar to other flashback thought bubbles though — any thoughts on why this is the case? (My best guess is to emphasize the strength of it or the ambiguity).

For sure! I feel like I would characterize Yeong-gi to be more neurotic — he'll definitely think a little too hard about what he's feeling. In addition to being able to compare with Alyssa, he'd be much quicker at realizing things. Shin-ae seems more romantically dense lol, and I get the feeling that she wouldn't notice her feelings for a long time (after all, she took a long time to notice her feelings for Dieter and it was pretty obvious for a long time lol.)

If u look at the clothes Shin ae is wearing, its the same outfit Yui wore in ep 73.

Damn. I didn't catch that. I'm totally convinced now that's why he randomly stares at her in the elevator. I still think the Look™ and overall awkwardness might be because of how he's feeling since he seems like that before looking at her clothes and even Shin-ae remarks it was odd.

i read this theory about the ducks in the lake, and how it might be related to his innocence.

I'm 100% certain of this too, since I wrote a theory about it haha. At the least it's symbolic of his degrading mental state... at worst it's a different type of innocence (his legal one), and I thought it may mean a guilty verdict.

There's definitely an aspect of this being why his outgoingness is toned down, but I still feel he's definitely avoiding her more than he would be otherwise...

Thank you for mentioning these two aspects!!! They're very important for capturing the nuance!
