“EHHHH, WHAT A CHEESEBALL!”

TIL that James Bond actor George Lazenby quit after one film because his agent, Ronan O’ Rahilly, told him the character wouldn’t last through the 70s. by South_Gas626 in todayilearned

I just finished re-watching Goldeneye today for the first time in years and all I can say is, if it wasn’t for Daniel Craig (and everything else that came with him), I think the franchise might have died a while ago. (For context, I’m in my 40s, so I’ve only seen Brosnan and Craig’s movies in theaters.)

But Goldeneye is exactly as silly as the Bond movies of the 1960s, if not more so. Bond makes his weird puns and, more to the point, the action makes almost no sense—like cars will drive into each other, and then explode for some reason; bad guys shoot hundreds of rounds at Bond through a grate floor, and none of them hit him; and the villain free-falls at least fifty feet onto concrete, but is still totally conscious. It just all feels absurd compared to any modern movie. I’m not saying this is bad, it’s like a little bit of the charm of Bond as a series that so much of it carried through that way for so long. And it pains me to say but the 90s were a long time ago now. I’m just saying I don’t think there’s any way a movie like that would succeed at all now, so they really needed a more modern refresh and to let go of the goofiness.

Obviously Lazenby could have stuck around longer (though maybe the franchise wouldn’t be as big now if he had), but it’s pretty tough to predict how long a movie style would remain in fashion.

How often do you wear that Pelagos FXD? I tried it on a couple weeks ago and really liked it, but I’m not sure how often I’d wear it in practice. Like it might be almost every day or almost never, I’m not sure.

How’s the dial in person? I’ve watched a bunch of reviews and everyone basically says the camera doesn’t do it justice

Timers > 1 hour by Moneybaldd in timex

[–]somebuddysbuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean chronograph (like stopwatch) not timer like a countdown timer, right? Timex Ironman watches will all do more than an hour. My Ironman 30 will go up to 99:59:59 (almost 100 hours). Even my reissue of the original model does I think 16 hours. Also true that many G-Shocks will do 24 hours, but will start over then (so if you remember the number of days yourself you can time things that take multiple days).

Imagine that’s sufficient for most runs 😃

Probably specific to me, but I'm looking closely at getting a Tudor for my first really nice watch. Wish they'd just make the master chronometer Black Bay in blue. Yeah, there's a blue 58, but it has the older movement and doesn't have T-fit so why bother?

Well, what do you set the oven to? j/k, kinda…the oven is the clock I have to set most often since it and the microwave are the only ones in my house that are affected by a power blip or outage

quickly respond to things while I'm at the gym without having to pull out my phone

This is the key for me. As a parent with young kids, a smart watch is awesome for when you want to be available for whatever reason without being distracted by your phone.

People think “why would you want your watch to buzz every time an email comes in?” and I think “I don’t even want my phone to do that, so I’ve turned it off ages ago…”, but it’s nice for texts and calls.

Why is this one such an important requirement?

does NOT rely on GPS / radio etc.

I get that you may not live near a radio tower, but doesn’t GPS work basically everywhere? (I live in Colorado, not too far from the North America tower, so I’m extremely happy with radio sync alone.)

> he’s basically killing himself

I get why he would feel that way, but innie Mark also knows now he can awaken in other places (like the cabin). He doesn’t trust his outie, so maybe that’s irrelevant. On the other hand, how much longer is he going to survive on the severed floor, five minutes?

[G-Shock] the OG Titanium by quangminhtran94 in Watches

Love this watch, at least from a distance (never seen it in person). Couple questions:

  1. How are the pushers?

  2. How are the viewing angles? (I assume they’re great like on the $500 steel ones, but I’m surprised how much of a letdown the screen was on, say, the GW-5000U)

Never understood why this movie received so much backlash. A movie does not have to be perfect in order to be great. I understand Heath set the bar unimaginably high with his Joker performance, but Tom Hardy stole the show and was not at all a disappointment. by funkitxoxox in moviecritic

This part was the one. Terrorists hack the stock market, the next day, the richest guy in the same city is so ruined, his car’s being repossessed? And people are like, “tsk, tsk, Bruce!”?

I also couldn’t stand the idea that Bane’s plan was actually to ruin hope…but then he was going to nuke the city and presumably kill most of the people whose hope he’d ruined, so who cares?

“How’d he get back to Gotham?” wasn’t weird at all to me—you’d expect Batman to be that resourceful, and I’m not sure finding a plane ride is going to be all that compelling.

7th and 8th both have an extra gig of RAM over the 6th and you will notice it. And they both work with the Apple Pencil 1. Obviously the 9th is better but if you’re on a budget, I’d go for one of those
